Our class is almost done with this book. There have been times were people had power and they used it in bad ways. In Josef’s story, Josef’s family is trying to run away from the Nazis. That shows that the Nazis had power and they used it in a bad way. Also, when Josef’s family and the other passengers got turned away from Cuba the Cuban government had the power to let them into Cuba or to make them go back to Germany. One time when Josef had power is when her mom takes a drug and now has to deal with his dad and watch Ruthy. Getting turned back and going to France and having a house. Ruthy going to kindergarten and Josef in first grade. That shows they have some power over themselves. But when the Nazis invade they have run away again from the Nazis. That is how power is shown in Josef’s story.

In Isabel’s story, There family and the Castillo’s are trying to run away from the dictatorship of Fidel Castro. At that time in Cuba, everyone was poor and the soviet union crashed and that was what maintained Cuba. So at the time, there was barely any food and people were poor. They were trying to get to Florida or “El Norte.” Fidel Castro had the power at that moment and used it in a bad way. Then there was a riot in Havanna harbor and Fidel Castro said the people were Americans. So at that point, he let people go and that was were Isabel’s family and the Castillos were going to leave and go to Florida or “El Norte.” At that point, Isabel’s family and the Castillos had the power when they were in the boat. Then when Lito jumps off the boat to make a distraction so Isabel’s family and the Castillos can go to Florida or “El Norte.” That shows how Isabel had power but also sad for Lito to go back to Cuba. That is how the power is shown in Isabel’s story.

In Mahmoud’s story, There family is running away from the civil war in Syria. The Syrian government had the power of launching missiles to towns and cities. Mahmoud had power when he was with her mom in the ocean and letting Hannah go with strangers is a hard decision. For the whole trip, Wali was not as happy before as he was when he was in Syria. Also, When they got they tried to get to Austria they went to prison and were close to the next country they had to go to get to Germany. That’s how power is shown in this story.
