The day I was at my interview with officer manager Lauren she offered to take me on a tour of everything she used to track sleep and to diagnose problems. She showed me lots of things and even showed me a track of a recent patient they had. This patient had bad apnea. The chart was divided into to parts which were when they turned on the machine to help the patient breath and when it was off so they could see if there was an improvement. Each of the two parts had how much the patient move, how long he stopped breathing and random times they woke up and some other things. When she showed me this I noticed it improved a lot once they turn on the machine. She also showed me another special job they had there and I think, I’m not so sure though that was the person who studied the sleep on paper and identified the problem. When she was touring me around she showed me different kinds of beds they use for different situations. One bed was designed for people who are a little bit overweight. The other bed she talked about was a Tempurpedic bed. this is meant for people who can’t sleep at a certain temperature. One cool tool I learned about when I went there was a camera that pat could capture even the slightest of movement and sound. I asked her why do they need to do that and she told me because snoring is actually not a healthy sign if it’s consistent through lots of days and not just a stuffy nose. The camera part of it was to capture unhealthy movements are things like sleepwalking and sleeptalking and other things that I can’t think of or know of. Here are some pictures.

Interview

Yesterday I left early from school to do my interview. As you may know, my topic is on sleep so I went to a sleep section of a hospital in Stamford. She was the office manager of the sleep section. Her name was Lauren something, She specialized in helping sleeping disorders. After I asked all my questions she offered to show me how they treat people with certain problems and she told me some sleep disorders. After that, since I was asking lots of questions she showed me how they diagnosed peoples problems have. She showed me this confusing paper that tracked somebody who had sleep apnea. This is a bad sleeping problem where you stop breathing consistently and you don’t get sleep because your brain is focusing to make your body breath. It also tracks if they snore because snoring is actually not a healthy to do unless it could just be you have a stuffy nose. I liked this interview because all of her answers made me spark new questions that I will ask for my next interview. This interview also made me want to research more. Overall I learned a lot and this will help boost my presentation a lot. Please look at my interview post.

Capstone Deciding On A Topic And Questions

In our class, we are doing capstone. It is a research-based project where you choose a topic and then research it, you do most of it in school.

This past week I went through a struggle of deciding a topic. The way I figured out a topic was brainstorming a bunch of topics then eliminating bad ones until the final 2 then I decided which one would have more resources. Yesterday and the day before, we brainstormed questions about our topics and mine is sleep. What I did was think of questions and those questions generated more. My main question that will guide my research is “Why do we sleep and how does it help your body develop?” My sub-questions are “what are the effects of not getting enough sleep”,” How can we help people who don’t get enough sleep”, “how and why do you sleep with your eyes open”, “what is the average amount of sleep time and why”.

Right now we are working on finding websites and books to help us do my research. This is a hard step for me because my topic is a little bit advanced so I have to find good search terms that will get me some good kid resources. I love researching my topic because it is interesting and has a lot of subtopics and interesting things like how does a person who does not get enough sleep compare to somebody that does.

Nerdy Derby

Today we did a thing called nerdy derby. This is a thing where one builds a car and races it against other cars that people made. In this Curious on the Hudson came in to do this hands-on maker project. The first step to doing this was thinking about how the wheels would work and attaching them to wood. I was working with max on this and we decided that since the course had a starting ramp and then a hill to go up we would make our car heavy to get a good start. Mak and I also put a straw on ours to make in aerodynamic.Threw this process we had to make sure we made it equal weight. This will help us so our cars don’t make turns. We also thought about ways to make it look good without ruining the cars.During the races I lost to at the start then added a cork to make it heavy, I also put paper clips on it to balance out the weight. After this, I won A good amount. FYI Max and I did not make the same car.
