Crispin: The Cross of Lead

Our reading group is reading a book called The Cross of Lead. It is about a boy named Crispin. His home in Stromford is avoided and disrespected. So is his family. As Crispin’s family dies around him, he believes that he has been abandoned by everyone. One day the cruel steward John Aycliffe declared him as a wolf’s head, which means that he is too much like an animal to be human, and that he committed a crime. That meant that Crispin could be killed on sight. There would be a reward of twenty shillings, which was half the amount a person was paid each year. Because Crispin was innocent, he flees his village and runs deep into the forest, filled with grief about the priest’s death. He was the only person he trusted.
