CU- Finland

To find our research  first we went to the school library, then I went to the Scarsdale Public Library and I found 3-4 books on Finland sowe had a lot of research. Then we look on databases for some more information. We wrote about the five Cultural Universals such as Politics, Social  Aspects, Economy, Beliefs, and Cultural Arts. The title of our comic book is called Finland because the comic book is on Finland. My favorite part of this project was finding the information and making our characters. The challenging part of this project was making all the animations.

CU post

A cultural universal have five topics Politics, Social Aspects, Beliefs, Cultural Arts, and Economics.

The leader of my house is my dad. The rules my dad has is to be safe for example we are not allowed to open the door for a long time because our cats could get out. One of the laws that affects my family is speed limits, it effects my family because if you go past the speed limit you will get a ticket. The school I go to is called Heathcote, I go to school about 30 hours per week. My favorite subject in school is reading. In school, the specials are Spanish, PE, Instrumental Music, Library, Art, and Music. In third grade we get chromebooks and we get kindergarten buddies. I live with my dad, my brother, and my Au Pair. On birthdays we celebrate my birthday with parties, presents, and special meals. I like to play games with family or friends.

Plant post #2

After two weeks the data for our controlled  plants was cell one had 4 leaves 3 buds and 10 cm tall, the second cell had 10 leaves and 5 buds, the third cell had 9 leaves 10 buds and was 11 cm tall, our fourth cell had 4 leaves 10 buds and was 8 cm tall. In each cell the plants were yellow and green.

In our manipulated cell one was dead, cell 2 was dead and call 4 was dead. But cell 3 had 18 leaves and it was l3 cm tall. Most of our cells were dead because the was less soil.

I think our plants died because there was less soil and the plants did not have all the minerals it needs to grow.

First we added wick on the bottom of the quad a wick is a paper root. Then we added soil in the quad. A quad is a foam box with cells in it so you can plant plants in them. Then we added three fertilizer pellets,  fertilizer pellets are seeds that can help the plant grow. Finally we added seeds in each cell. Our scientific question was what is the effect of less soil?

This is my group’s plants.

On the first day that our plant started growing in cell one it had 4 leaves and it was 1 and a half cm tall, the second cell had 4 leaves and it was 1 cm tall, the third cell had 4 leaves and it was 1 cm tall, the fourth cell had 8 leaves and it was 2 cm tall. As our plant grew we noticed that our plants started getting taller and soon enough buds came up. After a while we noticed that our controled grew flowers, the flowers were yellow but as the plant grew it started tilting down. In that quad the cell 1 had 9 leaves and was 4 cm tall, cell 2 had 16 leaves and was 11 cm tall , cell 3 had 10 leaves and was 10 cm tall and had 8 buds, cell 4 had 11 leaves.

After our plants grew flowers the next step was to pollinate. To pollinate we had to either use  Q – tips or our fingers. To pollinate we had to put our finger or Q -tip inside the flower and tap it very gently. After we pollinated the difference was the flower started to die but then we realized that seed pods were coming out.

On our manipulated cell one was dead  and cell four was dead but cell three had 10 leaves, 5 buds, and was 8cm tall. The  reason of this was because there was less soil in the quad.

I think next the seed pods will get bigger because if it grows it will get bigger.

Maglev post #3

For our first idea we used 4 to 6 strip magnets on the track and we did 1 to 2 disc magnets for the train to try to make it levitate on the track. But it did not work.

One of our problems was when we realized that our train was attracting to the track. So we lined up the magnets on the train with the magnets on the track and it helped a little. But we also needed the magnets to repel so the train could levitate so we flipped the magnets.

For our final idea we used only strip magnets on our maglev train and it worked because we realized that the disc magnets would just not work because it was hard to line up. We added 6 strip magnets for the whole track which helped make it repel higher because we lined up the train and the track exactly and that made it work.

We felt excited in the beginning because we had never made a maglev train and we thought our idea would work. In the middle we felt frustrated because we were almost out of ideas and none of them worked. In the end we we were happy because our idea worked.

Technology is…

Technology is something that someone created that is helpful in the world for example technology can be a pencil, computers, cell phones or anything else helpful that someone created in the past. My object is scotch tape it is technology because someone created it, and it is helpful, for example you could use scotch tape to tape stuff to the wall or use it for a project or something else that is helpful to use it.

My object solves the problem of struggling to stick stuff together for example, if you want to glue something together and you don’t want to wait for it to dry you could use scotch tape.  My object is made out of plastic and sticky stuff, it is also transparent, light, soft, smooth and flat

This is my object.

What we did today that worked was we put more strip magnets on the track so the vehicle could levitate higher. And we lined up the strip magnets to the vehicle to the track so it would not tip over.  We also marked the tape so we knew which magnets repelled and which ones would attract.

What we did today that failed was when we tried to put magnets on top of the vehicle, but then we realized that the levitation lowered. What we also did today that failed was when we tried to put disc magnets on the strip magnets the vehicle tipped over. When we made those mistakes we learned was we added more strip magnets to the track and not on the top of the vehicle, and when we put the disc magnets onto the track we realized that that did not work either.

For our next time we will try to make the train go all the way safely across the tracks with a slight push.

This is my maglev train.

maglev post #1

A maglev train is not any old kind of train it is a train that doesn’t have wheels but has magnets that repel from the track to the bottom of the train. My groups idea was to have half disc magnets and half strip magnets but we didn’t succeed.

What succeeded was when we did stirp magnets and disc magnets on the bottom of the train. What failed was that we couldn’t make the train move across the track with a slight push.

What was challenging was to figure out how the magnets can repel. What worked well was when we got the train to levitate.

This is my groups first idea for our maglev train.

My Expert Book – Bar Mitzvahs

I am now an expert book writer!  I wrote about Bar Mizvahs. It took me two whole months to finish in all my lessons. I have learned how to use expert words,  pros and cons, similarities and differences and so much more. I have also learned to put in facts but not too many. I chose this topic because when my brother turned 13 I started getting interested in it. Week by week I wrote edited and revised. My favorite part about writing an expert book was learning that I can write well. It was hard but worth it to make an expert book amazing.
