Capstone blog #3 Brody

For my capstone project my inquiry question was how has the three point line in basketball evolved over the years and how has it changed the game? The three point line is a line from which the basketball can be shot so that the shooter receives three points for the team. The three point line is a line in basketball that is 23 feet and 9 inches for the NBA and 22 feet and 1.29 inches for college.

One way that the three point line has changed basketball is scoring. For example Five years after the Three Point Line was added, NBA teams were only averaging 2.4 three-point attempts (3PA) per game. This past season, James Harden alone averaged 10 and teams averaged 29. Another example is In the past 20 years teams have doubled their use of the three point shot. The reason why teams are shooting so many three point shots is 100 mid-range jumpers will provide 79 points on average, while 100 above-the-break 3s would provide 105.

Another way the three point line has changed basketball is coaching strategies. For example teams have based their entire offense around shooting 3 point shots. Another example is the league used to be a Big Man’s league, made up of men above the height of 6 feet tall, and has now moved into a guard’s league where shooting 3 point shots is key to a team’s success. Another example is in practices coaches have to work on shooting more.

The process of this project was hard because I had to gather so much information with even some that I didn’t even use. I also had to find so many pictures. the recording frustrating because sometimes I would have to record it several times because it didn’t come out clear or it was glitchy. Overall I thought every thing came out great when I was done.
