The plane landed, I was finally in Iceland. Everywhere looked unreal.  It also smelled like the sea.

First we went to Reykjavik. When we got there we were so jet lagged we instantly fell asleep.

In the morning we went north and it became colder. It was 52 degrees. We went hiking and saw a majestic waterfall.  “It looks like it’s coming towards me.”, I said.

That night the sun did not set until 10:00 pm. I remembered in the Arctic the sun sets late in the summer. The next day we explored the area we were in.

When I was in the car on my way to my new hotel I said, “ Did you know that Iceland is almost as big as Maine?”

That night I ate grilled Horse and rotten shark. I tasted the rotten shark first.  “YUCK!!!”,I exclaimed.

“Why did you swallow it?” my mom said. I hadn’t realized that I had swallowed it. The shark tasted and smelled horrible. The reason it was rotten is that they had to ferment it for 6

months under the snow. They did that because the Greenland shark is poisonous. The grilled horse tasted very good.

When we were going to Vestmaniar(Westman Islands) we passed Ejyafiallijokull The volcano under the glacier that had erupted in  2010.

“Did you know the word volcano comes from Vulcan or Hephaestus the roman and greek god of volcanos and fire?” I asked.  We also passed Vantijokull the biggest glaciar in Europe.

“Did you know that 75% of Iceland is covered in lava fields?” I asked at lunch.

At Vestmaniar I saw a lot of puffins.  There I went to the top of a volcano that had erupted in 1979. On top of the volcano I put my hand in a pit.  “OUCH!!” I yelled. The pit was hot. It also smelled like sulfur.

My dad looked on a website and it said the volcano was going to erupt soon.

I was scared but it still was the best vacation EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
