Working on my final project #6

Once I finished my site visit, interview, answering my main inquiry question and sub questions, I am now working on making my slide show and memorizing my script. It is easy so far because I already memorized my sub questions but, memorizing the script is the hardest but I am close to finishing. For my capstone share I am doing a ted talk, the ted talk has to be 5-8 minutes long and my presentation is 7:35 minutes.

I am working on finishing my slide show and it looks great so far. I cant wait to finish my capstone!  Click here to see my script. Click here to see my presentation. Cant wait to do more on capstone and present!

Summarizing Sub Questions and my Main Inquiry Question #5

It took a long time to summarize my sub questions and answer my main inquiry question, but I finally finished. Here are my sub questions and Main Inquiry questions:

How does a healthy diet affect children’s learning?

Having a good diet affects children’s learning in a positive way. For an example, good nutrition helps kids come to school prepared and will have fewer interruptions during the school day. Additionally, because of good nutrition kids have been healthier and have had better attendance records, meaning less absences. Also, WHen children eat nutritious snacks every couple hours there brain functions better. Kids are eating a lot of saturated fats like; french fries, cheese burgers, chicken nuggets, sugary desserts, that are being served in cafeterias frequently. This causes the decrease in their brain power. If you eat too much glucose it can cause your body to crash which leads a drop in energy, focus, and successful mental performances.Lastly, Researchers have been finding that a higher quality diet helps get high test scores.

What is good Nutrition?

Good Nutrition is the key to good health, which is also eating a balanced diet.` A balanced diet is when you eat the right amount of grains (6 servings per day)  Examples of this is 1 slice of bread, 1 small tortilla, 1 cup of cereal flakes, vegetables  (5 servings per day examples are  1 cup raw leafy greens, ½ cup of cut up vegetables, ½ cooked  beans or peas, fruit (4 servings per day)  examples are  1 medium whole fruits, ½ cut up fruit, ¼ cup 100% fruit juice, ¼ cup of dried fruit, seafood (2-3 servings per week) an example is  3 oz cooked fish or seafood, Nuts and seeds (5 servings per week ) , examples are tbsp of peanut , 2 tbsp or ½ oz nuts or seeds, dairy ( 3 servings per day), examples are 1 cup milk, 1 cup yogurt, 1.5 oz cheese, fats and oil (3 servings per day),  examples are 1 tbsp vegetable oil, 1 tbsp soft margarine, 1 tbsp low fat mayonnaise, 1 tbsp light salad dressing.

How does eating well affect children’s physical growth?

You need proper nutrients for your bones to grow, for your immune system to grow so you don’t get sick, lastly you need the right amount of calcium, protein and nutrients, for your muscles to grow properly, and your brain to develop properly. Your body needs the right amount of nutrients so you stay healthy. When children don’t eat as healthy they are not as strong as people who do eat healthy. Nutrition can also relate to genetics because if your parents are 6ft you’re not going to get taller than 6 ft. If you or anyone you know is malnutritious than they might not get to grow the appropriate height for there age. There are a lot of malnutrition kids in the world that don’t have enough nutrients and can’t grow the proper way for there age. There are about 759 million people in the world who are malnourished and don’t grow the way they should.

How does eating well affect children’s social emotional growth?

A lot of things can affect children’s social emotional growth. Examples of this is iron deficiency which can to crease dopamine which is a chemical that makes you happy which negatively impacting cognition which is your brain. Deficiency in vitamins and minerals prevents many mental concentration and emotional abilities.  Children who are unnourished can have trouble with their emotional stability.  According to David E. Barrett, a psychologist at Harvard Medical School, ”Our findings suggest that simply providing calories to undernourished infants or mothers-to-be seems to have a lasting effect on the way the child deals with others and makes use of the environment.” In other words, giving more calories to young children can help how they interact with their environment.

How does poor nutrition impact children’s lives?

Children with poor nutrition (malnutrition) are likely to have extreme short and long term, health problems and diseases. Lots of foods have sugar an example is sugar cookies,  chemicals an example is Subway’s bread rolls, sodium an example is Pizza, Caffeine an example is soft drinks

What kind of health problems are common in children with poor diets?

There are a lot of tragic things that are common in children with poor diets. Here are some examples, Overweight (weight more than suppose to), Tooth decay ( rotting teeth or falling out), high blood pressure, high cholesterol, Heart disease, stroke (having trouble physically), type 2 diabetes ( not enough of insulin or too much), osteoporosis, some cancers, depression, eating disorders.

How does a healthy diet impact a child’s life?

Have you ever wondered how nutrition impacts kids?  Well, nutrition is the main key to functioning, in school, health, and your overall behavior. When you eat well there are many positive things that happen and also when you don’t eat healthy there are many negative things that can happen. Additionally when you do eat healthy your teeth get stronger, your body gets stronger, and lastly you get fit. Examples of the foods and drinks that make your teeth and body stronger and fit are milk, walnuts, eggs and other foods. Also the negative things that can happen to you is high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, tooth decay, heart disease, stroke, some cancers, eating disorders, high blood pressure, and obesity.

Lastly, some foods that cause these negative effects is eating too much unhealthy and processed foods. Eating well can help your behavior in school, your attendance, your test scores, and your focus. Eating unhealthy can cause a person to become unfocused, have behavioral problems, and lower test scores. Nutrition is one of the most important things because you need to eat healthy to be fit and strong. If you don’t eat healthy you can get sick or gain weight which can affect you later in your life.

Overall, nutrition impacts children’s health in lots of different ways.

Those were a list of my sub questions and I cant wait to move on to creating my presentation.

Capstone Site Visit #4

Over the weekend I had my site visit.  A site visit is a place that will help me get additional research for my project. For my site visit I went to two places Chopped and an Organic Food Store. The site visit helped and taught me a lot.

I was lucky enough to have Keri Glassman come with me to my second site visit which was to chopped.  We looked at the salad bar together and she taught me about the right kinds of greens and proteins to include in a salad.  She suggested incorporating grilled chicken rather than fried chicken.  She also taught me about other types of protein, such as hot-dogs, which are actually bad. They go through a process which makes it not as healthy.

I learned that saturated fats are un-healthy fats that make foods taste good when it is actually unhealthy. Examples of saturated fats are Ice cream, Fatty beef, Lamb, Pork, Beef fat, butter, and cheese. I learned that you need the right amount of greens, protein to stay healthy. I also learned that eating to much saturated fat can increase your risk of heart disease and high cholesteral. Lastly I learned that a healthy diet is a good way to become strong and fit and most important make you feel good.

Here a couple of pictures from the site visit:

Should be eating
Shouldnt be eating

And many more. Overall the site visit was fun and I learned a lot of information, I cant wait to do further research on nutrition!

Capstone Interview #3

Finally, I finished my sub questions.I now have to research the topic so I did a little research and then had to find someone to interview.I found two Nutritionist, Keri Glassman , Lara Metz , and emailed them to see if I can call them or meet them in person, They both said that a call would work better because of there schedule.

The next thing I had to do was come up with my interview questions which was easy, I came up with interview questions like:
How did you become interested in Nutrition?
What do you think are the most important things children should be eating to stay healthy?
How do you think a healthy diet impacts children’s learning?
How do you think eating well affects children’s physical growth?
How do you think eating well affects children’s social-emotional growth?
How do you think poor nutrition impact children’s lives?
What kinds of health problems are common in children with poor diets?
What foods do you think lead up to health problems?
How does a child going on a diet impact them? Do you think it’s a good idea for children to do that if they are obese? Why or why not?
How has your experience changed what you think about nutrition?
What has caused the increase in child obesity?
What are the main problems associated with not eating healthy?
It seems that food allergies have increased over the years, why do you think that is?
What impact do you think food allergies have on nutrition?
In your experience, how do you think allergies affect people’s lives?

Then came the morning of the two interviews and I was very nervous. I talked to Lara first on the phone and then Keri it went by quickly and I felt more comfortable as I asked the questions. The interview were awesome and I got a lot of information. For instance, the most important information I found was The impact on childrens learning, They both taugh me that eating healthy lowers your absences, increases your test scores and lastly, makes your brain function better.

I cant wait for my site visit.

Choosing my topic #1

How did I find my capstone idea?
One day I was looking through Instagram when I saw Keri Glassman, a famous nutritionist’s Instagram. I went to her profile and looked through pictures and I was inspired to do my capstone on nutrition. So I asked my parents if it was a good choice and they said, “brilliant idea.” I was excited to start capstone and learn more about nutrition. The person I am planning to interview is Keri Glassman who happens to be a really good family friend of mine and my family.

My final capstone idea is nutrition and I am excited to learn more. Finding a Topic was easier than I expected but at the same time a little hard, this is because I had to think between two topics Nutrition and Interior Design, they were both really good topics so I had to really think about it, what was really easy was that I could interview someone easily. I am excited to start capstone.

Choosing my main inquiry and sub questions #2

After we found our topic we had to find an inquiry question and sub question. Finding an inquiry question and sub question was easier than I expected. I was sitting in my class and I thought of a question:
What role does nutrition play in a child’s life and how does it impact their health?
I checked it with Mrs.Cooper and she said it was a great idea. Mrs. Cooper said “Charlotte, now that you have your inquiry question, you have to think about your sub questions, your inquiry question has to be a umbrella for your sub questions.

” So I thought about it and decided to have my first question be What is good nutrition?
I thought about how it impacted kids learning so I formed it into a question, How does a healthy diet impact children’s learning? Next I thought how it effecting kids growth and I asked my teacher she said great so she helped me turn it into a question, How does eating well affect children’s physical growth?

Then I came up with does it affect peoples emotions and how they act (I was still sitting with my teacher) she said great,”How does eating well affect children’s social-emotional growth?” do you like it she said, I said yes. Then I said if I eat unhealthy will it make a difference. She said ( Mrs.Cooper) try How does poor nutrition impact children’s lives? I said you know just the right way to word it. Thank you I explained she said your welcome. “Well go over it in class children’s” She explained.

Rube Goldberg

Rube Goldberg is going along well it is fun and a motivating activity. We changed our task because the other task was not working so the new task is to knock down a painting. I come from afar to anouce that it worked yay. We can’t wait to share the iMovies with all of you guys.

Rube Goldberg

In Class 5C we are doing Rube Goldberg. Do you know what that is? If not I will teach you, Rube Goldberg is a chain reaction that triggers objects to form a simple task. My groups simple task is to have a toy car hit the space bar and have it play a video. We have 8 tasks. These are some of the Materials we use:

Magnet tiles, a golf ball, foos ball, wallpaper roll, foos ball soccer ball, a computer, soccer ball, paper towel roll, and a mini golf “putting range,” and a toy car.

So far we are doing a good job. We are almost finished and when we meet up Wednesday we are going to try to complete the task. Then we are going to put together our iMovie with all our fails and our success. We really enjoy Rube Goldberg it is  so fun and we really love doing it. Even though we get annoyed when we fail but, it all leads to success. Even though we are on take 75 we really put effort and changed what needed to be changed.  I hope by now you know what a Rube Goldberg is.

Rube Goldberg

Do you know what a rude Goldberg is well? it is a chain reaction that triggers objects to form a simple task. For an example mine looks like this IMG_0891-1lfd0xw This is what mine looks like so far. We are close to finishing. Our task is to have a ball role onto a laptop and click the button have us saying thank you for watching.
