Presenting Capstone

Yesterday we preformed our Capstone to our parents. Since I am doing an Ignite on Virtual Reality, I went last because I was doing an Ignite and that means I only get fifteen seconds per slide, and I could only have fourteen slides so that means I get three minutes. In my class there were only two people who did an Ignite including me. Most people did a TED talk. I had a lot of struggles along the way, like how my script was almost a minute over three minutes. Another struggle I had was, I kept looking down at my script because sometimes I couldn’t think of the word. When I presented I thought that I did good. Before we presented, I thought that I would be embarrassed and shy in front of the parents, but I was actually way braver then I thought I did. Then everybody finished we were done with Capstone. I think that it was a great year and I had so much fun through out the whole year, My favorite part about Capstone was my interview To be honest I didn’t think that (the person that I interview) Jason Hoffman would write back. It was a great

Capstone Interview and Site Visit

For my Capstone I’m doing virtual reality. I have to do an interview and a site visit. I have already done my interview. For my interview, it took me sometime to figure out who I wanted to interview? I was thinking who invented virtual reality? Then I realized that there is no way he would write back. So I kept thinking, who could I interview? Then I started to think, would if I emailed somebody who worked for making virtual reality, or an owner of a virtual reality shop? So I decided to email somebody that owned or worked at a virtual reality shop. So I decided to give it a shot but nothing really came up. So next I thought what if I search for virtual reality museum. Nothing really came up so I thought  what if I  scroll down. Then something came up. It said virtual reality museum nyc. I decided to look at it so  I clicked on it. It showed a museum in ny I couldn’t the problem is that I didn’t have time because I had a state cup soccer game, basketball game, and a baseball game and practice. So I didn’t have time to go there so I was about to leave the website, but then I noticed that I didn’t do my interview.  So I decided to email them and they answered I was so happy. They wrote back saying that he (Jason Hoffman) has a eleven year old daughter. I was so happy that he wrote back because in all honesty, I thought he wouldn’t write back, but I guess he did. So then I emailed him all of my questions and a few days later he wrote back. I thought that he would write back a little later because I had 18 questions. Then I wrote him a thank you letter. I was so happy that I was done with that.

So next I had to figure out where to go for my site visit. So at my house It took a long time. So I decided to email my teacher to ask her what she thinks. She wrote back and told me that it is hard to go on a virtual reality site visit. So I don’t have to do a site visit, but right now I’m working on getting another interview, because you are allowed as many interviews and site visits as possible. I think that my next interview is going to be with Purdue. I’m probability going to interview the quarterback coach because he teaches the Purdue, by using virtual reality. So far I am having a lot of fun doing my interview.

Check out my interview questions, and what he said about it!

  1. Does the VR experience hurt your eyes because it is so close, and if it does, how? If it doesn’t, please explain.

The vr experience is intended to create a fully immersive experience tricking the eyes to adjust to a 360 environment.  If you use premium hardware and headsets you should not have any eye strain.

  1. Why was virtual reality created?

VR has been around for twenty years educating various industries to adjust to real life situations within VR first.

  1. What are the uses of virtual reality?

VR has limitless opportunities across categories (Entertainment, Health & wellness, Travel, Medical and Real Estate

  1. What equipment do they need to develop VR?

Unity is a program that developers mostly use to create rendered VR content

  1. How much planning leads into the development of VR and how much money is spent?

It is on a case by case basis.  Projects can range from a few thousand to millions of dollars.  Planning also varies but a project could last from a number of months to years.

  1. Does VR help scientists and doctors study certain things like the human body?

Yes – The medical industry is one of the largest groups to adapt the technology into their everyday life.

  1. What skills do you need to create virtual reality attractions, and how long does it take to develop them?

You would need to have an education from coding, technology mechanics and graphic design

  1. How do the creators develop the realistic aspects of virtual reality?

Some developers use real life models as reference.

  1. On average, how long does it take to develop one VR headset?

Not sure on this one.  VR World using all of the latest VR headsets though.

  1. When you view something using VR, how do you think it can change the way you see that same item in “real life?”

Vr has the potential to change your perception of the worlds or a social issue.  The feeling of being immersed into an environment or someone else’s shoes is a very powerful tool.

  1. How has VR changed over time?

The VR industry has exploded in the last 2 years giving rise to location based entertainment centers like VR World.

  1. As technology changes (cell phones), do headsets also need to change in size?

VR technology is on a path to wearables where mobile devices will soon come or evolve themselves into fashionable eye wear that you can instantly display augmented reality graphics or transport yourself to a VR world.  All tech will become smaller, cheaper and faster

  1. How is the process of making a VR app different than creating a regular app?

I am not sure

  1. How are some VR with controls different from a VR with no controls?

I am not sure.  Most headsets come with controllers to allow players to see their digital hands in an experience.

  1. Does VR help students?

Yes in fact VR World has an education program offering workshops for students from grade K to post grad school.  We use the STEAM program to introduce and educate mixed media to a new generation that will be leading the industry someday.

  1. Is there anything that I didn’t ask that would be helpful?

These are all great questions.;  I hope I was able to provide further insights into this exciting future industry.

Spanish field trip

A few days ago my class went on a field trip. The field trip was organized by my spanish teacher, Sr. Johnson. We went to a peruvian restaurant. When we got to the restaurant our spanish teacher gave us a sheet of paper to fill out at the end. It was written in spanish but it said “What is _______’s favorite food? Does he or she like water or the spanish drink? What food did you mostly dislike”? It was different from when I usually go out toeat. You would not just order food. The waiters would put dishes out one by one. There were four dishes. That is called family style. On the side of each dish was rice (it was boss). The first dish was my favorite. It was steak ( in spanish, bistec), and I love steak when my dad makes it on the grill at home so I knew that I would like the steak, and I was right. Asher and Harry, who were at my table, also liked the steak a lot. The next dish was grilled chicken( in spanish, pollo a la parrilla). It was also so good, but I still liked the steak better. After the chicken was fish (in spanish, pescado) I love most fish. The one that they had was okay, but it was better because of the sauce. The last and final dish was spaghetti and steak. I only had the steak and it was so good. That was the last dish and I was so full. Sr. Johnson asked us to fill out the worksheet that he gave us. We did. Most people liked the steak the best, but Harry said that the spaghetti was his favorite, and his least favorite was the steak. I was surprised, but I guess that is his opinion. After that I talked to my friends and asked them how they thought the food was, and they thought it was also really good too. I was glad I went because I got to try different foods and hang out with my friends.

Capstone

In class we have to do Capstone. For capstone everybody got to chose a topic. I choose virtual reality.  Capstone is when you pick a topic and then you have to do research about that topic and then present it to your class. Since we just started Capstone in class, we made a poster and wrote out our topic in the middle of the page and then we put our  post-its on the poster, and on the post-it’s we wrote our questions. We wrote the questions and then we picked which one is the best. The reason we did that was because we had to use that question for our main inquiry question. Next my teacher gave us two partners, we went over all of our questions then we tried to elaborate on each others. Then we each gave our partners a grade from one to four. I think that I got a three point five. Capstone is a individual project. Most of the work you do is in class. We are allowed to present it in any way like google docs google slides a notebook a poster a video a Wevideo anything. I decided to do it in google slides.

Rocketry Post

I am looking forward to launching our rockets, because I really want to see if we succeed or fail. I am also proud of that we got really far. I hope that my group gets farther. We have got pretty far. I have learned to use different fins. Next my group will design our rocket. We keep thinking of new ideas but I guess thats good. We just measure today it was very fun to measure we had a great time we will launch our rockets very soon. We used tools called a trundle wheel and a clinometer. These tools help us measure the angles of the flag pole. We had a lot of fun today.
