Poetry Unit Introduction:

Heart Mapping – Writing from the Heart

Here is the link for your own heart map to be printed out: Heart Map (when you print it, go to settings and play with the size in order for it to fit the page or be the exact size you want)

Heart Map is due on Wednesday  – make sure it is decorated and ready to be uploaded to Seesaw.

This week we will be starting our poetry unit. One way to get ourselves started is to create a heart map. The video above is of all the 3rd grade teacher’s heart maps.

Some questions to help you get started heart mapping:

  • What memories have you stored in your heart (they don’t have to be BIG or exciting memories. For example, the smell of molasses cookies baking in the oven at my grandmother’s house is an important memory to me because it was something she would always do.)
  • What people have been important to you – and why?
  • What are some experiences or events that you will never forget?
  • What happy or sad memories do you have?
  • What secrets do you keep in your heart?
  • What things or objects are important to you — for example, a tree in your backyard or a stuffed animal, etc.?
  • What’s at the center of your heart – you might want to place the most important people, memories, and experiences in the center?
  • Ask yourself if you want to keep some things inside your heart and less important things on the outside of your heart.
  • Do you want to draw more than one heart – good and bad; happy and sad; secret and open – and include different things inside each heart?
  • Do different colors represent different emotions, events, and relationships?

Math

Today we will review and summarize AREA concepts that we have completed over the past two weeks.  Please watch the Math Antics video below to capture the big ideas. Afterwards, please watch the video made by Mrs. DeGrazia to help visualize the different measurements of square units. It is important to remember to label the correct square units when using area. Last, complete the three word problems.

Social Studies

Photograph Analysis: In this video, there is an example of analyzing a photograph/illustration using the See, Think, Wonder template that we have utilized in our science units of study. You will learn how to analyze a photograph/illustration by making observations about the people, objects and activities. You will then learn how to look at the “main idea” of the photograph by thinking about what activities you observed happening in the picture. Then some example wonderings are shared with you based on the illustration. Watch this video. A google slideshow has been shared with you showing the next photograph/illustration you will be analyzing using the See, Think, Wonder template.
