ELA: Book Clubs

Today, after doing your agreed upon reading, you will be posting on your Book Club’s Padlet page. Watch the video today to hear about the Dos and Don’ts of writing on Padlet.

While you are commenting on each other’s posts, please be sure to be respectful. These comments are meant to help each other, ask questions and push each other in a positive direction.  These are our friends we are talking to, so remember the golden rule- do onto others as you would like done to you. If you would not like it said to you, don’t say it to someone else.

Some ways to disagree respectfully include:

I disagree because…

Please explain further because I see it a little differently.

Can you provide more text evidence because I thought about it in a different way?

Math

Watch this video below. You will learn how you can find the capacity of many containers as well as a mini challenge for you to think about.

Watch this video below to see some different strategies on solving word problems with capacity.

Copy and paste these slides to your April E-Learning Slideshow.

You can draw bar models, draw pictures, write a number sentence or use a combination of the three to solve these two word problems. Think through your work and make sure you show how you solved the problem.

SMART FACT

On April 29, 2004, the National World War II Memorial opened in Washington, D.C., to thousands of visitors, providing overdue recognition for the 16 million U.S. men and women who served in the war. The memorial is located on 7.4 acres on the former site of the Rainbow Pool at the National Mall between the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial. Numerous communities and artists have designed and built memorials to commemorate events in history. If you were to design a memorial to help people in the future learn about this time that we are living through right now, what might it look like? Share your design and thinking on SeeSaw.

Wellness Week: April 6 – April 10

Good morning 3rd Graders!

Welcome to Wellness Week! Throughout the week, teachers will be offering workshops, lessons, and activities that will explore the ways in which we connect with ourselves, others, and the wider world. This week you will have the opportunity to take part in so many different experiences. We hope you all take the time to enjoy new independent learning opportunities and enjoy time with your families.

Participation and Attendance:

Workshops and activities are listed by age range AND starting times (9:00 a.m., 10:30 a.m., and 1:00 p.m.) on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.  The district realizes many families within our school community need flexibility on Thursday and Friday to engage in religious observance, all activities and sessions will be asynchronous and noted in BOLD.

As you work through this week, there are three sessions daily that you are expected to participate in. You should choose from the activities paired to our grade level, or within our grade level bands. Some of these activities will be with teachers who are conducting the lesson live while other sessions are pre-recorded activities that you can choose to watch at a moment when you have free time during that day. The district has a reflection form for you to fill out after you have completed the activities for the day.

Directions to Access the Menu of Activities and Submit Daily Attendance:(this was sent to your parents in a separate email)

Step 1: Click on this link.

Step 2: Click on the activity that interests you under the appropriate time and age range.

Note: For synchronous activities, if you haven’t already, download the Zoom client or Zoom mobile app to the device that you will be using to participate in the activity. Students in grades 2-12 will need to log into Zoom with their Scarsdale Schools user account by clicking “Sign in with Google.” Students in grades K-1 will have to be signed in through an adult’s Zoom account.

Step 3: Follow the directions for the activity or click on the zoom invite and engage in the live session.

Animals Survive in a Group

How do organisms interact with each other and their environment to survive?

Today we learned that being part of a group can help animals survive by finding food, shelter, water, defending themselves from predators, reproducing and caring for offspring. We read informational texts on ants, ducks, fish, cheetahs, and beavers to understand cause and effect based on how an animal behaves to survive.

Our class took notes after reading each text and we noticed patterns with these animal behaviors.  Now, students will sort the animal groups and categorize them by: shelter, food/water, defense, and care of offspring.

Complete the padlet below and sort each animal group.

  • give evidence to why you chose to sort it the way you did
  • Use correct spelling and punctuation
  • Write in complete sentences

Magnets & Static Electricity

Did you know that magnets have a force of their own? Much like the pushing and pulling we have been talking about, magnets make things move. Watch the Generation Genius Video to start thinking about magnetism as a force.

  1. Watch the video Magnets and Static Electricity
  2. With a partner, read the packet called, “Read About Magnets & Static Electricity.”
  3. Complete the “Genius Challenge”. These are the questions on the back of your reading packet.
  4. Done with it all? Check out these additional websites about force:
    1. DK Find out about magnets
    2. True Flix – Magnets
    3. PebbleGo – Magnetism

Forces

We have been learning about balanced versus unbalanced forces. We’ve also learned about friction and predicting the anticipated movement of a pendulum. We learned through our investigations that friction is a force that affects the motion of objects.

Click on the video link below from BrainPop to learn more about forces. When you finish, click on the padlet and write something you learned from the video. Please put your initials and use correct spelling and punctuation.
