Plant Experiment #1

My class has been learning about plants. We had to come up with questions and pick one of them to test out. My experiment was “Will a plant grow up in rocks?” My hypothesis was that the plant would not grow because the rocks would dry up the water. Also, the soil has nutrients that rocks do not. So far my hypothesis.  For this experiment I had 2 plants. One was the control, meaning that we did everything that a plant would normally need. For example, the control plant got air, soil, water and sunlight. The other one was the experimental, which means that we put everything that a plant needs, but we put rocks instead of soil. I am comparing the height of the control and experimental.

After a week that the the plants have been growing, the control plant is 4 cm high. For my experimental plant, nothing has happened. I have 3 plants growing in each cell. The tallest plant is the height I said above, But all of my control plants are green. We have watered the control and experimental plants 5 drops daily. But they always get water from the bottom of the quad because there is a bin with a silky blanket inside. The wicks will suck the the water up and the roots will suck up the water from the soil. Every day the plant grows about an inch. I wonder what will happen next! The experimental, as I said before is not growing. I wonder why?
