Passion Project #1: How Did I Come Up With My Topic

For my Passion Project, I will study a video game programming language called Unity. The process of selecting this topic was easy. I’ve always been passionate about video game programming, but never really dove into it. I was originally going to do video game programming in general, but then I realized I would need to narrow down at one point, so I did a bit of research and discovered that Unity was the most powerful, yet beginner-friendly, coding language. My guiding research questions will be: Who created Unity, what was it created for, what is it mainly used for, what else can it be used for, which major corporations use it, how does it compare to other languages, were other languages based on it, how does it actually work, and will a sixth-grader be able to make something on it. I chose these because I am also interested in learning about the history of Unity. I also included questions about how it works. My letter is attached, and I will see you soon!

Character’s Reason For Leaving in Refugee

In Refugee, the characters all leave their countries for various reasons.

Josef leaves because he is a Jew and the Nazi’s tell him that if he doesn’t leave they will put his father back in a concentration camp.

Isabel leaves because Fidel Castro is being unfair to the Cubans and keeping everything for himself and her Dad would be arrested if she didn’t.

Mahmoud leaves his country because the war is putting his family in danger and the government is hurting random people and he wants safety.

Rube Goldberg Blog Post #4

WE COMPLETELY CHANGED EVERYTHING UP! We scrapped our original one, and made a whole new one. I will put a video of both of them on my 6th blog post. We started using a different room (It was still connected to the bathroom, but it had more space), and I think that our new one is much better than the old one. It sure is much longer! Our new one has 10 steps, including me putting the ball through the tube. We had a bunch of fails, but it finally worked yesterday. If you haven’t read my other blog posts, our objective is to knock down a bowling pin. In our old one, a marble knocked down the bowling pin. In our new one, a ping pong ball, soaring from above, knocks our bowling pin down. I think it is really cool, and Michael agrees. We have both worked really hard on this, and we tried our best. We also tried to do everything on the best category in the rubric. That concludes my 4th blog post. Thanks for reading!

Rube Goldberg #2

Today our sketches were due. We have finished them. This is a picture of ours:

Sorry I didn’t explain what a Rube Goldberg is in my last post. It is a complicated chain reaction which ultimately achieves a simple task. That concludes my second blog post. Stay tuned!

Philly Walking Tour

Philly Walking Tour

By: Danny

Philadelphia, November 9th, 2018

Heathcote’s 5th Graders break into groups, and start their walking tour. The fifth graders first went into Document Hall. In there, they saw the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, and the Constitution. They were lucky enough to have a teacher come and talk to them about the three documents. After that, the fifth graders left Document Hall.

Fifth graders Daniel and Cyrus got separated from their group and went with another mom. But then, just in time, the heroic Ms. Boyer came to the rescue. After sprinting through the rain, Daniel and Cyrus finally rejoined their group.

The group then went into the building where the Liberty Bell is housed. What stood in front of them was a long hallway filled with pictures and captions. At the end of that long hallway, they saw history’s most famous bell, one that had a crack which was made bigger in an attempt to fix it – You guessed it! I’m talking about the Liberty Bell.

After taking  pictures and bellfies, the group left exhibit and met up at the National Constitution Center, which had bathrooms that – in this reporter’s opinion – are absolutely luxurious! It had amazing sinks, clean urinals, and sanitary stalls! After that encounter, which the students would never forget, they got back on the bus, awaiting the long ride home.

Passion Project – Initial Thoughts

In class we are doing a passion project on problems in the classroom. My problem that I would like to fix is too much garbage going in the recycling. The way I will stop this is that I will take the garbage out of the recycling. Then the earth will be cleaner.

Another idea that I have is that we should do more partner work but people choose the same partners every time. The way I will try to fix this problem is I will make an invention that chooses the partners. This will help because people always go with their friends, and they end up never getting any work done because they are too busy talking.

One other idea that I have is that some people are talking during fire drills. One way to solve this problem is that anyone who talks gets a strike. 3 strikes in 6 fire drills is a call home. This will make other students scared to get a call home, so they won’t talk during fire drills.

Passion Project 3 – NFL Training Equipment

Making my Passion Project was awesome. It was about NFL Training Equipment. There was a lot of cool stuff to do in WeVideo. I was able to do either a WeVideo or a Ted Talk. I chose WeVideo. Making videos with WeVideo is really fun. There is music and pictures and cool transitions! In my WeVideo I put an interview with a worker from DICK’s Sporting Goods. I also interviewed the coach of the Scarsdale Raiders. We learned how to make good questions. I got a lot of information from https://www.nfl.com/. I learned a lot of things about interviewing people and asking questions. I also learned things about voice recording and inserting pictures into videos. One last thing I learned is that making videos is harder than it looks. My interview was awesome. The man who I interviewed was really nice and he answered most of my questions. Overall, I think this is my best Passion Project yet!
