Many weeks ago, we embarked upon a joint project with a fifth grade class. Our goal was to have collaboration between the grades while completing a challenging STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, math) activity. We were to work in teams researching, designing, building, and decorating bridges made out of Popsicle sticks. These bridges were to be tested to determine if they were functional, and then judged on their aesthetics.
The children were so excited to meet their teammates and begin the phases of the project. As they worked on each task, they learned to cooperate, compromise, problem solve, and communicate. Watching the teams work together, one could not tell whether a child was fourth grader or a fifth grader. As each bridge was tested, a sense of accomplishment developed. All of the bridges passed the five-pound, two-minute test and each of the bridges were made more unique in the painting and naming process.
As we come to the reflection phase, we realize that our adventures in bridge making have taught us so much more. We thank Mr. Winston and his class for being such good role models and for sharing this wonderful project.
Many “bridges” were made!
This sounds like a really worthwhile and exciting project. Well done!
Thank you so much! This project was an incredible experience for all of us and definitely worthwhile.
