Fractions, Fractions, and More Fractions!

Now that we have completed the “Four Operations of Whole Numbers” Unit, we have immersed ourselves in the study of fractions. We began this unit with a special guest teacher. Our district’s math helping teacher, Nancy Pavia, kindly provided us with a conceptual and fun introduction to the Unit. Our inquiry consisted of many essential questions leading us to identify fractions on the number line, order fractions by using benchmarks such as ½, make equivalent fractions, and find the GCF to simplify them. We then studied adding and subtracting fractions with like and related denominators, and are now learning about improper fractions and mixed numbers. We are also using our critical thinking skills to solve many types of real world fraction problems. So far, we love figuring out fractions!

We folded paper to make equivalent fractions for 2/3. We noticed that the shaded part of the paper never changed.
