Wood carving

Wood carving.

i have been interesting in the art form for a while, but never researched it til now, I found out that you need hard wood like basswood, butternut and oak for wood carving, and special tools called Mallets and carving gouges. Its also a very long and hard process. I have attached a picture of wood carving tools professionals use to make the beautiful artwork they do.

Tree vocabulary

Cambium is found between the phloem and xylem, phloem is the bark, on the outside, cambium is the cells that make the tree grow, and  xylem is what trees use to absorb water and nutrients, these all contribute to trees growing big and strong.

What are growth rings?

A tree gets a growth ring every year, if u cut it open you’ll usually see many rings  darker than the wood, every year when trees grow new cells, they get a growth ring, scientists use growth rings to date trees and find out when they were made.

Part (2) the worker uses a laser for precise cuts to get as many 4×10 logs as possible. The narrow logs go through a different saw, that cuts the ends off then it goes to another saw which cuts them properly. The first 4×10 go for a resaw to clean them up and get them ready to be sold. Then the edges are trimmed so it’s nice and neat

How construction wood is made

Recently, I watched a video on how construction wood is made, and id like to share the steps with you:

They start with big logs, normally spruce, they soak the logs for 30 minutes to get rid of gunk and dirt, next they go through a machine that removes the bark, It takes 10 seconds for all the bark to be removed off ONE log, that’s pretty impressive if you ask me. They are then dried and they go through saws to be cut.   An average log has 7-8 Pieces. (Part 1)

in tech an image was posted explaining the engineering and design process , the steps are: Ask, Imagine,Plan,Create,Improve

And i feel like we use these steps daily for small tasks.

Tech experience

In tech we have made flashlights, learnt about atoms, positive and negative charge, and finally as we come to an end to this class, we  have the option to make bookmarks, and art notebooks. Tech has been fun and i will keep coming back at lunch.
