40% of all plastic use comes from single use products. The South Pacific garbage patch is 1 1/2 times the size of Texas. The two great pacific garbage patch is 3x the size of France. There is plastic in the Mariana Trench. Every fish collected in Lake Ontario has had at least one piece of plastic inside. 900 tons of plastic has been produced since 1960. In WWII citizens were encouraged to save and not waste. In the 1950s people began to encourage stopping pollution and picking up after themselves. (Keep America Beautiful) The current recycling rate in the US is 10%, which compares nothing to Europe’s 30%. There are 7 types of plastic and not every type can be reused. In march of 2018, China stopped buying/ harboring plastic shipped in from America. Half of all of America’s plastic waste is still harbored there. 40% of all plastic use comes from single use products. If this continues by the year 2030 there will be more plastic than fish in the oceans.
