My Weekend of December 8-9th

This weekend, my family and I celebrated Hanukkah. On Sunday, I was going to celebrate with my cousins and grandparents.

I am the baker in my family, so I had to bake something to bring to my grandparents’ house. My mom suggested sugar cookies, because at the moment my house is going through construction and I have a small kitchen.  My mom thought I was going to make it from a cookie mix, but being the baker I am, I made it homemade; the cookies and icing.

First, I had to buy the confectioners sugar and almond extract for the icing.

At 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, I started baking. I mixed the dry ingredients together, then the wet. I beat them both together until I got a cookie dough consistency.

I was doing so well until I saw that I had to freeze the dough for 2-3 hours. OH-NO! I took off my apron and stomped up the stairs to my parents.

“Soooo, Are they done?” My dad asked, hungrily. “ 2 hours” I replied. I set the timer for 2 hours and watched tv.

It was 8:30 when the timer went off. I dragged myself down stairs and started rolling out the dough and cutting the circles.  By the time I put the first batch in the oven, it was 8:45 and my mom came down the stairs and helped me to go more quickly. She stamped the cookies out, while I was on oven duty. When the cookies finally came out of the oven, the cookies were great.

Sunday morning, I finished decorating the cookies. I combined all of the ingredients together to make the icing. To decorate the cookies in a more fancy way, I marbled in blue food coloring and dipped the cookies. I added jimmies, and nonpareils.

At my grandparents’ house, all of my family loved the cookies. I had a competition with my uncle, though. He brought a French fried dough mix called beignet (Pronounced: Ben-yay) and a frying pan, to make them fresh at my grandparents’ house. Even though his was REALLY good, my sugar cookie plate was almost gone, and mine were homemade.

Do you like to bake for your family? If so what do you like bake?
