Edcamp Day 1

Edcamp

By Gus

Today we got to see Edcamp, where parents came in to share their passions with us. I chose Julie DeGenaro and Lori Weiser.

Julie was presenting her passion of being a prosecutor, and Lori was sharing her passion about being an orthopaedist. At 10:15 AM Julie came into our class. She gave evidence of her job experience and cases she has solved. Ethan’s grandpa and Julie were in court together, since Ethan’s grandpa is a defense attorney. What I noticed was that even though they have different sides, they get along. From 2006-2011 Julie worked for the KCDA as a line assistant; in 2011 she was promoted to prosecutor. Julie looks at evidence to help solve crimes such as cameras, phone calls, phone trackers, victim/witnesses, and fingerprints.

Lori used Ethan as an example and squeezed his leg and moved his foot without him moving to show tendons and how when you squeeze a certain part of the body those ‘ropes’ will close. She showed us a children’s xray with growth tissues; when we finish growing we will have used up all those growth tissues. She shared types of bone fractures, and Scarlett was an example of how they put on a cast. Lori slowly wrapped a small white underlayer then poked a hole through it for the thumb, then dipped the cast in warm water so it would harden. When the cast was finished she had a saw that she used to cut through and remove the cast without hurting skin. The blade is very dull so the skin is protected but the cast can be pulled apart and off.
