Technology Responsible Use Policy – 2018-2019 edition

As the 2018-2019 gets underway it is time to review the Scarsdale Public School’s Technology Responsible Use Policy (RUP).

The policy used to be called the Acceptable Use Policy (AUP). Over the course of the 2017-2018 school year the district technology team worked to revamp the policy to better reflect new technologies, such as Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) wifi access and cloud-based platforms, as well as language that more clearly applies to all users within the Scarsdale Schools network, not just students, and that the use of technology is not simply about what might be acceptable per guidelines, but rather how to use technology in a responsible fashion, even where they aren’t specific direction. Acceptable is passive, Responsible is more powerful and meaningful and promotes personal accountability.

At the start of every year we do a Responsible Use Policy lesson with all students. For students in grades 2-5 this lesson also includes the Online Accounts Form, which is a document students will review with their parents and sign. It discusses the online programs students will be using and reinforces how the Responsible Use Policy applies to the student’s online account use and access. For Kindergarten and 1st grade we also do the RUP lesson, but in a much more age-appropriate way and without the online form agreement.

These RUP lesson slides, but please know that the lesson itself uses the slides to spark questions and guide discussion around the meaning of the policy, we do not simply read the bullet points…

Below are PDFs of the online accounts agreement all 2-5th graders needs to review with their parents and sign before they can use their Google accounts, Chromebooks, iPads, blogs, and other educational technology.
