  1. The Orphan of Ellis Island chapters 1-6
In the story, I think it was really childish of him to run away just because he didn’t want anyone to know that he was a orphan. Anyway, it was kind of cool how they had those recordings in the phones, but when that Italian man started talking to Dominic, it was really creepy. At first, I believed that it was just some sort of prank, but now, I think that something deeper is happening.

  2. Question 1: What would you feel if you were in Dominic’s shoes?
I would just keep talking to the voice in the phone and find out more, because I wouldn’t really have anything else to do since I was trapped in the museum, and also try to find some food.

Question 2: What do you think the source of the mysterious voice is?
I think the voice is from an immigrant from a couple of years ago and now is magically talking to Dominic.

  3. Question 1: What would you do if you were in Dominic’s shoes?
I would continue to talk to the mysterious voice because I don’t have anything better to do and also, I would attempt to find some food.
Question 2: What do you think the source of the voice is?
I think that the voice is an old immigrant that is magicly talking to Dominic because I know he is going to be brought back in time

  4. So far, Dominic didn’t want to tell everyone that he’s a orphan, so he locked himself in a closet at the museum his class was visiting and fell asleep. When he wakes up, he finds that the museum has closed. For comfort, Dominic listens to the voices recorded on the phones that are on display. Somehow, a voice starts speaking to him through the phone.

  5. Chapters 1-7
Question 1- where is the voice talking to him coming from?

I think that the voice is coming from the telephone pole. But it’s not possible to do that which makes it fiction. Also, I just read the back of the book, and it said that he gets transported to the past so I think that the voice is used as a time machine that can only be used at night.

Question 2: What will happen to Dominic?

I think that Dom will get transported to the past because of the teaser that was given at the back of the book. But what will happen next? I think that Dom will act like an immigrant and that is where historical fiction comes into play.

    Summary chapters 1-7

What took place in the story was it starts out that the main character, Dominic, is on a class field trip at Ellis Island. The past of Dominic is he is an orphan and keeps moving from one to the other. Dominic is nervous because he doesn’t want anyone to know about him being an orphan so he makes up a lie, and then he runs away. Dominic goes into a closet and falls asleep for a few hours. When he wakes up, it’s night and he’s scared because no one can hear him. So what he does is he listens to the tapes of people immigrating and one talks to Dom.

  6. Chapters 1-6, pages 1-30.

Question 1: What would you do if you were in Dominic’s shoes?
If I was in Dominic’s shoes I would be really scared & possibly a bit angry. I would be scared because, A VOICE IS TALKING TO ME!! It would be scary to just wake up in an abandoned museum, and its pitch black. If I was to hear the voice I would most likely scream & try to break the phone. I would also be angry and upset that no one realized I was missing.I think if this was real the teacher would be sued.

Question 2: Where is the voice coming from?
I’m not sure where the voice is coming from. I think it may contribute to the time-travel later in the book.

    Response:
Dominic is a foster child who moves to different families over 3 times a year. When he is at a school trip at Ellis Island he tells a big lie. Right before he gets busted he hides in a closet so he can’t be called a liar. In the closet he takes a “short rest” or so he thinks. When he wakes up the museum is shut down for the night. He is all alone. He is playing with a fake phone that lets you talk to immigrants, when suddenly an immigrant talks back. This Italian man tells him to go to sleep, that is where we left off. I feel really bad for Dominic because of all he has been through. I think that Dominic should be terrified, but he isn’t. Instead he listened to the man who he doesn’t know.

  7. At the beginning of the story it talks about this boy named Dominic. It’s from the boys perspective and his parents have died. He is getting moved from place to place as a foster child. He wishes he has friends. Personally I feel very bad for this kid because he’s been through so much and now he’s on Ellis Island and he’s lying that he has a great grandfather from italy that immigrated to the United States, and now he wishes that he did not lie. Later on in the story when Dominic woke up I was confused because he said he didn’t know were he was and he gave a rough description, of where he was but then I understood that it was nighttime. When he was talking to the telephone later on in the story I was also confused, because tapes of people’s pasts don’t just talk to you and I either thought he was hallucinating or was going crazy.

  8. Chapters 7-16
In the book, Dominic suddenly finds himself in Italy and three boys find and make friends with him. One of the boys has a pet goat and together they steal a couple of cherries from a giant man farm. The giant man finds the four boys and tries to whip them, but they escape and run away to uncle Tomaso, who tells them that two families in America are willing to take them. The boys don’t want to be seperated, but then, a even bigger problem occurs, the giant before is dead, and Salvatore is blamed for the murder. The boys must now get to the ship that’s leaving for America before Salvatore get’s caught and sent to jail.
Question 1: What will become of Dominic and the boys?
I think that Dominic will have to work for the clam guy and the boys will leave, then somehow, Dominic will find a way to America and then they’ll be reunited.
Question 2: Will Dominic ever get to time he’s from?
I think, yes he will, because usually, these stories usually end in success, so yeah, I think Dominic will get back to the time he’s from.

  9. `
    Chapters 7-16

Question 1: what will become of Dominic when the boys leave?

I think that when the boys make the journey to the port they will convince Dominic to be a stowaway with Francesco and they will all go to Ellis island and the story will keep going from on the ship, the at Ellis island, to at a house where I think the story will end.

Question 2: will Dominic ever get back to the time he is from?

I think there are two outcomes. He ether travels to America and lives in that time for the rest of his life with the boys or, he would travel with the boys and when he gets back to Ellis island we would get transported back to the time he is from and maybe even find a permanent family..

Summary: Dominic wakes up in the past about one hundred years earlier in Italy and finds the boys from the telephone recording from the building. He goes with them and really connects with the boys. Then, when he finds out the boys are leaving, he wants to go with them and feels like he is alone once more.

  10. I noticed that Dominic is going to have to find a new group of children that will hopefully take him in as family, the way the other boys did. My prediction, is that he will find a way to get to America with the eldest boy and then he will learn what life was like for immigrants.

  11. Chapters 18-21
In the story, the four boys start heading out south to the harbor and Salvatore gets very sick. There are many shops selling fish, clothes, drinks, and stuff like that. A thief steals the boys shoes and then, they find Signora Giasullo and she treats Salvatore and gives the other three boys food. Then, Dominic sees a gold key on Salvatores neck, the same key that Dominic owned in the future!
Question 1: Why does Salvatore have the key?
I think that Salvatore really is Dominic’s dad! Since now that he is sick, he will die, and Dominic will never get to meet him! It’s a perfect time-travel main idea
Question 2: Will Dominic ever find his true family?
I think that yes, because I already suspect that Salvatore is his real family.

  12. Chapters 21-23
In the story, Salvatore continues to get sicker and sicker and sicker until finally after much effort and pain he dies, but before he dies, he confesses that he is actually scared of horses. Then, they say prayers and some other religion related things, and take Salvatore away. Then, Francesco offers the remaining boat ticket to Dominic.

Question 1: Will Dominic reach America?
I think yes, because I feel that to return to his correct time period, he must reach America. I don’t really know why I say this, I just have a strong feeling that he will reach America.
Question 2: Why does Dominic have the key when Salvatore never had a kid?
I think that before Dominic leaves for America, he will take the key from Salvatore’s dead body and give it to his past self, and that’s how he will end up with the key.

  13. 1. How did Dominic get the key if Salvador never had a child?
    2. What will Dominic do in America?
I am a little confused about why the author would include Dominic wondering if he was related to those people if Salvador dies and if Salvador is dead that means he never had a child so, how would the author include that wondering if it now can’t be true. I also think that the whole thing is just a dream. I remembered that in the beginning it said that Dominic had fallen asleep and then he mysteriously woke up way back in the past. And one of the boys that he is with just happens to have the key that Dominic had had his whole entire life. I think that that is kind of hard to believe.

  14. Chapters 21-24
Question one: Since Dominic has the ticket, will he make it to America?

I think Dominic will make it to America because the story is based off of him and he probably will get the full experience of Ellis island and would show the readers what it was like.

Question 2: What would Dominic do in America?

I think Dominic will go through Ellis island with the boys and then will wake up from a “dream” that he is in because in the beginning of the story he fell asleep and then woke up in italy so maybe it was all a dream and the dream would be completed when he got out of Ellis island and into America as an Immigrant.
Summary: Dominic and the boys are still with the nurses and Salavotre is sick and getting sicker, then they get woken up in the night by Father Tommaso telling the boys that Salvatore is not getting better and then they talk to him, Dominic discovers that Salvatore has the key that Dominic always had and lost when he appeared in italy.

  15. 1. Will Dominic like his new life in America?
    2. In America, will Dominic see his friends from Italy?
I think that in the chapters we read, Dominic was starting to see how lucky he was back in his time. I think that he is starting to realize that he was complaining about how hard his life was when he was in his time, but now he must be feeling really guilty for taking things for granted. I think that he realized this most when he was in steerage on the boat when he was saying that he wants to sue the company or complain while everyone around him was praying that they lived.

  16. In chapters 24-30 Dominic has taken the place of Salvatore in America. After the trip in hard trip in steerage Dominic expects to see the NY he knows, but he doesn’t. It also discovered that Francesco has kept the key. He says h will pass it down to his son which he will name Salvatore. Dominic discovered that Francesco’s son was his grandfather which explains how he gets the key. So much has happened to Dominic and there is more to come.

Question 1: Will Dominic like his “new” life.
I think that he will like the family the same that he likes the other ones, but it will be strange because of their time differences. The family will probably think he is a weird kid because of what he knows and how he acts. This family is supposed to have a job for him too. He will probably dislike the job and think it was unfair because he is a kid, but that is what they did back then.

Question 2: Will Dominic ever see Francesco and Antonio again?
I think this will be goodbye for them because think after some time Dominic will go back to the present.

  17. Question 1: Will Dominic like his new life in America?
I think Dominic won’t like his new life in New York without the boys and that he will want to end up staying with the boys then maybe he might wake up back in the year he is from.

Question 2: Will Dominic ever see the brothers again?
Like in my other theory, I think that they will stick together and live in the same place in America or will visit often. Also if Francessco is the great grandfather that he will go back to his time and will learn about his history of his family.

Summary: Dominic get ready to leavee for the ship that takes them to America. They get on the boat, they have to leave their goat behind and Francessco was very upset. They wereon the boat for fifteen days and then when they got to Ellis island, Dominic thought that Francessco was His great-grandfather.

  18. Chapters 23-30

In chapters 23-30, the 3 (not 4) boys leave for America. They have to leave the goat Violetta behind because animals weren’t allowed on the ship, and then, they went down to steerage, which was terrible. There was bad smells, bad food, and dirty conditions. It was terrible. After many days, the immigrants(boys) got of the ship and headed for Ellis Island. There, they will get checked, and Dominic realizes that Francesco is really his great grandfather!

Question 1: Will Dominic like his “new family”?
I think that yes, he will get used to his new family, and like them.

Question 2: Will Dominic ever see the other two boys again?
I think no, he will leave them at Ellis island and never see them again.

  19. In the story, Dominic falls asleep at Ellis Island, and returns back to the Ellis Island museum. He tries to find where his true family has gone. He goes up to the third floor and sees the goat picture that Francesco scratched. He is then offered a new foster home (that has lots of pets) and lives happily ever after.

  20. Julia’s final entry:
We just finished The Orphan Of Ellis Island. This book was a very interesting story that kept you thinking. It was about a boy named Dominic who is a foster child, who falls asleep and wakes up in 1908. He then meets his great grandfather and his brothers, they all journey to America. Then he wakes up back in the present. When he was back in time he discovered many things about his family like why his key necklace has the initials S.C and who his real family is.

Question 1: Was this all a dream.
I can not be sure if it was a dream. Time travel is not real which makes me think it was a dream, also as soon as he fell asleep he was in 1908. He did not just pop back in time and experience time travel. On the other hand he would have to have knowledge about this in order to see it exact in you brain, but he did not know anything about them.

Question 2’ Will Dominic like his new family.
I think he will love his new family. After all it kind of had everything he wanted in a family. Pets, siblings and other things. It will also be good to get away from his old school because he did not seem to like it very much. Even though I think he will love them, he will still be upset he is not with his real family. After learning to love his ancestors ,leaving his heritage behind and joining a new family will probably be hard and won’t feel right, but overall I think he will love the new family.
