Dennis Oehler Learning From our Differences 4th Grade

At Heathcote Elementary School  we have a program called learning from our differences. In this program we learn about mental and physical disabilities. This year a man with a physical disability came to the school to talk to the 4th grade. His name was Dennis Oehler. He lost his leg and needed to use an artificial leg.

He told us that it is common for kids to stare at other people with a disability, but he also told us to not stare and to treat them as regular people you see. Dennis Oehler was going to become a professional athlete at soccer, but because of his leg injury he became a athlete in the Paralympics. Mr. Oehler shared his story (about his leg) with us. What he said was very inspirational. He even shared a story about his three year old daughter. I loved having him here.

Colonial America Book Reflection

In Heathcote Elementary School, my class was assigned to make a Colonial America book. It was a long process of taking notes, planning my writing, writing my draft, typing my doc, and pasting it on to my google slides. Before we started our book, Mrs. Rickard gave us our topics. My topic was daily life of colonial women. First, I took notes and collected Information for my topic. Then, I planned out my writing and did my draft on paper. Next, I typed my draft on my doc. Last, I pasted my writing that was on my doc into my google slide. Finally, I did my pictures doc, bibliography, and glossary. The process took patience. My favorite part was making my google slide because I liked organizing the text and images.

I learned a lot from this experience. I used to only know a little about Colonial America, but now I know a lot about Colonial America. To get my information, I read books, articles, and websites. I used to think Colonial America wasn’t very interesting, but now that I know a lot about it I think it’s very interesting. The most challenging part for me was my chapter 1 because I had to organize my notes and make a chapter with them. I learned that I can handle a difficult progress of making a book. If I did this project again I would find more words to put in my glossary because I want to teach kids more words and meanings.

This is my Colonial America Book and I hope you enjoy it:
