Saw Cover Design

For technology class, we were supposed to design a cover for a saw. I was thinking to use a piece of cloth and three or more buttons so I can tighten the cloth around the saw. I want the length of my cloth to be 4.5 inches and I want the width to be 1.3 inches. I wanted it to be 1.3 inches instead of the exact same width as the saw so then the buttons can tighten the cloth. The thickness of this cloth is about the thickness of a beach towel. I’m also going to use buttons. I am planning on using three buttons but I’ll add some more if I need to.

I’m planning on making this by first cutting out a piece of cloth that is 4.5 inches long and about 1.8 inches wide. I’m going to cut out a piece of cloth that’s 1.8 inches wide instead of 1.3 inches wide because when I put it on the saw, it’s going to be wrapped over the saw. After I cut out the piece of cloth, then I’m going to wrap it around the saw. I’m going to do that so I can determine where to sew the buttons and also where to cut the slits for the buttons to go into. Once I do that I’m going to sew the buttons onto the place I would like them to go and then I’m going to cut a number of slits onto the cloth, depending on how many buttons I’ll choose to use. This is the sketch that I drew for the design:

3D Printing – Possibilities and Impacts

The invention of 3D printing has changed the way we produce objects, from tools to toys, clothing and even body parts. I learned that there are many things that could be made with 3D printing, but I never realized that there could be things in my house that were made by using a 3D printer. There’s this pineapple decoration my friend got me that can possibly be made by a 3D printer. There is also a bookmark, a plastic container, and maybe even my phone case. 3D printing also helps the environment. A lot of things are being thrown out and are really hurting the planet, but with 3D printing you can reuse those materials by making a filament out of them. You can make filaments out of plastic, metal, ceramics, or even chocolate. 3D printing also has a big impact on artists and the artistic community. 3D printing can be very useful to them because they can design whatever they want to, print it out, and wait for their object to be printed out. This requires a little less work which is why it is useful to artists. I haven’t really thought of an invention that you can 3D print and solve, but say you want to buy something that’s really expensive. Instead of buying it, you can just 3D print it. I will probably take a while, but it’s better than spending a lot of money.

Timber Harvest

For the asynchronous assignment, I watched four videos. The videos that were taken in the 1900’s and the ones taken more recently are different. I realized that there is more manual work involved in the 1900’s than now. While I was watching the video about the redwood trees, they were cutting down the trees with some sort of saw and planned out where they wanted the tree to fall. I realized how dangerous and risky that could be. First of all, the tree can possibly fall on you which is pretty dangerous. Also, I think that planning out where the tree is going to fall is pretty risky. If those people plan it out wrong, they could damage the tree and any other trees surrounding it. I was surprised to see how much logging from the 1900’s changed. The videos that I watched that were filmed more recently have barely any manual work required. Machines are the ones that cut down the trees and prepare them to be sold, not the actual people. The video that I found the most interesting was the one about the redwood. I thought the process of cutting down the trees were interesting, but also the redwood themselves. I had no idea they were that big and that they could live for so long, which is probably why redwood is very valuable to a lot of people. While I was watching that video, I wondered if anyone ever died from cutting those trees. I also wondered if anyone still cuts trees like that.
