Technology Blog Post #4

This week we have been learning about 3D printing. 3D printing starts with a 3D model of something. The model is sent to a 3D printer. The printer has a plate, which moves up and down, a roll of the material you want to print in, which can be plastic, metal, or other things. Then the 3D printer starts by melting the material, and printing out a very small slice of the model, which will cool instantly. The plate lowers, and the printer prints the next slice. Each slice is very thin, so it can take a very long time. After a while, you have a copy of your model. 3D printing has a lot of potential in the future. You can design things on your own, but engineers can print their own parts, and doctors can even print organs. Overall, I think 3D printing is very cool.

We learned that trees are very useful. Trees can clean the air, paper is from trees, and many more uses.  Today we learned about how to get usable wood from trees. It’s a pretty long process, and it’s also quite complicated. First, the trees are brought to the factory, where they have their bark removed. After that, they are cut into more manageable sizes. Overall, I think this is pretty interesting.

Building Technology Blog Post #2

What does it mean to build something? Building something is the process of building or creating something. One time I built something was for my 5th grade Rube Goldberg project. It was with two of my friends. I don’t use it anymore, but it was really fun to make. I enjoy making things because I find the process of designing and engineering things very interesting. Building is different from other activities because it requires different skills.

Grade 7 Technology Blog Post #1

A couple of days ago, 7th grade started and I have technology as my first quarterly. Today, during class, we were show the project we will be working on. The project is a surprise box, which on the outside is a normal wooden box with a sliding lid. but when you open it, a critter will pop out of the box. this is done with a contraption relating to the sliding of the lid, although I don’t know how it works, I am excited for it because I like to build things.

Recently we had to answer our main inquiry questions. Mine was: How has the structures and functions of robots changed over time? I did some research and looked at the really old robots. They were all very slow, heavy and were very limited in the things they could do. On the other hand, when I looked at the newer robots, I noticed a big difference. the newer robots were a lot lighter, faster and could do much much more. Then I compared the 2 categories and I noticed that robots improved in speed, reflexes, sensing its surroundings, and a lot of other things. Newer robots were capable of doing more things, whereas the older ones would just be for out entertainment. In conclusion, robots are evolving really fast, and I can’t wait to see what happens next.

For my Capstone interview, I went to the Scarsdale High School Design Lab. I interviewed a teacher and his name was Mr. McDonald. I had some really good interview questions prepared such as:

  1. What inspired you to become an engineering/design teacher?
  2. What is the process of engineering and designing a robot?
  3. What are/is the main purpose(s) or robotics?

I thought that these questions very good because they got me a lot of information.  Sometimes Mr MacDonald was also asked he’s students from the robotics Club to answer some of my questions. I thought the students at the SHS DesignLab were doing very challenging but also very interesting and fun things. The students at the shs designlab were very smart and very nice. They answered my questions in good detail and today gave me a little tour of what they were currently doing, like their First Tech Robotics Competition Robot and some other robots they had made.

After the interview, the teacher gave me some  tips for my project because some of his students have done their capstone’s before.  after I spent a few more minutes there I was really Happy because I got a lot of information. I also had a really good time at the SHS DesignLab.

Recently, for my capstone project I went to Google for my site visit. My mom’s friends friend works at Google so we got an invitation to go there as guests. First, we had a little tour of the building, and then we would go to a place, sit down and talk. My brother had interview questions with him so he talked with her for a while. I also got to ask some questions, which helped me a lot with answering some of my questions. Then we had dinner there and noticed that you had a lot of freedom at Google as long as you are getting work done. After that we kept touring so I had a lot of time to do ask questions and learn more things. I thought the site visit to Google was really fun and educational and helped me with my project.

Feature Article Podcast Reflection

This is the link to my podcast.

The process for making the podcast was really long and hard. First we had to write out a script fro our podcast. Then we had to rehearse it a lot. Then we had to get a box and a microphone and record our podcast until it was just right. It is really hard to record because in the microphone your voice sounds really unnatural. After we recorded the podcast, we had to edit it. We had to add automation, add music, rerecord things etc. After we were done editing, we published it and put it onto our drive. Then it was pretty much done. Another thing that made the podcast harder was that we had a deadline and we only had 4 boxes and microphones so so we had to take turns. Our podcasts also had to be around 2 minutes long. In conclusion, the podcasting was really hard but our hard work totally payed off.
