Expert Lecture #6

This time Jonah’s mom came in to talk about genetics. she talked about chromosomes and marking about genetics. In the end, she also gave us some books we could read about the topic. I had a really fun time!

Your gender is determined by chromosomes, one from your dad, and one from you mom. A male’s chromosomes is made up of one X chromosome and one Y chromosome. On the other hand, females have 2 X chromosomes, and no Y chromosomes. Your mom will definitely give you an X chromosome, while you dad could give you either an X or Y chromosome. So nobody has 2 Y chromosomes. The chromosome is passed through by a sperm. So basically the sperm determines your gender. If you are a boy or man, the sperm from your dad had an Y chromosome, while if you are a girl or woman, the sperm had an X chromosome.

Marking a family in the genetical way sounds a bit complicated, since it can go on forever. Male people are marked by squares, while females are marked by circles. A couple is marked by the square on the left, the circle on the right. an unknown gender is marked as a diamond with a p in it. If adopted, the person adopted is marked as its gender inside a [ ], with a connected line to the person who adopted the other person.

We marked Harry Potters family in the genetical way. It was so fun. I had a great experience.

Rube Goldberg 2

So as I have not done much of the project yet (for the final) I (more like we) have created a cardboard model using cardboard and a golf ball. I have a plan to create this on Imovie, though I am still a bit behind. Adding to the zip line, it can be used to push the truck other than the cylinder. I still have many choices to make. I was wondering if to use a TV box for the project, but my dad would not risk it because the project can damage it, and the box is relied on for exporting the TV. Without it, then we would have to buy another TV (possibly), which we do not want to happened. Otherwise, I look forward to the results of my project! 🙂

Rube Goldberg 1

We are starting a Rube Goldberg unit in school. Do you know what a Rube Goldberg machine is? It is a machine that uses a complex way to do a simple task, such as to crack an egg or ring a doorbell. it is named after the inventor and cartoonist Rube Goldberg, who designed many of such fascinating machines.

I made a tough decision to work as an individual, since there was a possibility for working with Elliott and Ronald. I already have decided that the goal of my Rube Goldberg is to pop a balloon. My brothers are helping me by offering suggestions for more complex ways.

I already have designed part of the machine, but I will add to it further in the project. I do not have a complete materials list yet. From my research, I learned there are many possibilities for a goal. I am also working on a zip line idea in the Rube Goldberg. I also tested the last 2 steps, a cylinder pushing a truck down a ramp with a needle taped to its front to pop a balloon in a napkin holder. That sounds ridiculous, right? It is so the balloon does not move away. But it can be useful.

I hope everything goes as expected, without too many takes. We already took a slow-mo video of the popping test.

Music blog Post-Garageband Song reflection

It went okay because most things went as planned. I actually do not know if it sounds like Dvorak’s New World Symphony. It has 3 tracks. The first worked well. I followed the conversation style.

Here is my song on soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/heathcotemusic/kenneth-5b

I had a great experience on Garageband because it was fun, challenging, and interesting. I can also access garageband at home.

Expert Lecture #5

Today Jackie Bastardi from Curious on Hudson came in and told us about being a mechanical engineer. She said engineering is a lot of fun. There are lots of  projects you can do. Once, there was a 3D designing competition, and the winner gets their model design 3D printed. She also told us a lot about stories of her career. The “Gallopin’ Gertie” was also mentioned throughout the talk. It was about a bridge that collapsed because of the winds. In the end, we all made kazoos. It had popsicle sticks, straws, and paper. The paper vibrates to make the sound. I had a fun experience.

My trip to Vermont

I spent four days at Vermont to go skiing at Killington/Pico mountain. My family stayed at a hotel called BestWestern star rated 3 and a half. It took about four hours to get to BestWestern, stopping for lunch on the way.

My family had to unload before settling in the hotel, since we could not leave all the luggage in the car. The room was made up of a living room, closets, a bathroom, a kitchen, and a bedroom. The bedroom was made up of two queen beds and a TV. The bathroom had a toilet, a sink, and a tub and shower. The living room had a TV, coffee table, and sofa bed. The kitchen had a stove and oven, a fridge and freezer, and a sink and microwave.

The skiing place had many parts. There was lodges, chairlifts, trails, and gondolas. In the morning, there is a lot of people, but the afternoon has not that many. Also, some trails had ice, which can make me fall down. But otherwise the ski trip was fun.

On the way back, my family stopped for dinner in Albany. I got home around 11:00 pm, which is pretty late. But I will not forget the trip.

All About Chocolate

I really like chocolate. Chocolate is a type of candy that is made from cocoa beans, powdered milk, sugar, and cocoa butter. There are many types of chocolate, such as caramel chocolate, milk chocolate, peanut chocolate, dark chocolate, bitter chocolate, which is unsweetened, and  hot chocolate drinks. Chocolate comes in all shapes and sizes, from big blocks to chocolate chips used in cookies. I like most of them.

First, where did chocolate come from? It came from long ago where cocoa trees grew. Farmers mimiced the ways monkeys ate the cocoa pulps. Later, when Europeans came, they brought it back. It was served as a drink and only the rich could afford it. Then even later, a man named Milton Hershey sold lots of chocolate and was one of the most famous. His plant made and sold a lot of products. He sold Hershey’s bars and kisses.

Chocolate has many ingredients. Of course, there is chocolate liquor and sugar. There is sometimes milk and cocoa butter. The remains squeezed out of chocolate is bitter chocolate. To shape chocolate, you must melt it then shape it using molds the way you want it, such as circle or rectangle. But it is referred as sweet flavor.

I like chocolate because it is sweet and energizes me. The taste also is  great, making it a candy I really enjoy, as I like chocolate ice cream and cakes.

As you can see, I love chocolate, but not all the time. chocolate is sweet, but it is one candy I really like.

The Adventures by KJS Chapter one: The dungeon

Hello! Here is a you choose story on the computer. Please listen to the instructions to make this way more fun. If you die in the story, start over from the post. Also please give credit to my brothers Jason and Steven, they helped make this. Enjoy!!! 🙂

You find yourself in a dungeon. All you have is a useless pocket knife. There is a door that has an X, and a door that has a check. Which one do you choose?

X: You enter. Spikes shoot at you and you die. Go back to the start.

Check: you go through. It is safe. Move on.

There is a door, wait or enter?

Wait: a ladder falls down. Move on and skip Enter.

Enter: Spikes shoot you. You die. Go back.

There is a suspicion the ladder is bad. Do you climb it or not?

Climb: When you climb up, you see spikes nearly avoiding you. Skip one Paragraph and move on.

Still wait: The door starts rumbling, then spikes shoot out, killing you. Go back.

As you climb up, you see a path. But there is more of the ladder. Which way do you go?

Ladder: As you keep climbing, you hear something. The walls clasp together crushing you. Go back.

Path: The path is safe. Move on.

As you walk, You find a door and some stairs. Which way do you go? The answer decides your fate.

Stairs: It is a dead end. Spikes shoot you and you die. AARGH, so close!!!! Go back.

Door: You see stairs. Move on.

At the top, you escaped the dungeon. To be continued…
