READING: It is important to understand the story elements of fiction books. The chart below is very helpful to remember.

Last week, we learned as readers near the end of a story, they expect the tension to build to a boiling point (climax). When this happens, readers pay attention to how the main character is tested, notice how the character reacts, and thinks.

“Why is this important to the character’s journey?”

We talked about how Opal was not only tested if she lost Winn Dixie, but she was tested with her relationship with the Preacher. This was important to Opal’s journey because her dad would always put his head back in his turtle shell. This is the first time her dad showed emotion about her mom and Opal realizes he misses her too. Now she has her dad and new people in her life. Opal doesn’t feel as lonely anymore.

Below is an anchor chart you should use to help guide you with your reading work:

anchor chart guide to make a story mountain (Print or refer to this chart to help you with your reading work)

Read an independent realistic fiction (character study) book for 30 minutes.

Please listen to “Because of Winn Dixie”  chapters 25-26  (in your reading folder) before you watch Mrs. Luciano’s reading  lesson below. These are the final chapters of the book. Enjoy!

Mrs. Luciano will teach you as a story comes to an end, the main character resolves the big problem. Readers notice this and they ask: “What strength did this character draw on to solve this problem?”  AND  “How has the character changed?”

Mrs. Luciano will read chapter 26 after the lesson. The beginning of chapter 26 Mrs. Luciano will model how to pause and think. Please follow along. You can stop watching the video at 4:32.  However, if you would like to hear chapter 26 again, then you may listen to Mrs. Luciano to the end of this video!

I have shared in your Social Studies folder the two slides I’d like you to copy and paste to your E-Learning slideshow. After watching the video you will know how to complete them.

Thought Prompts – Lesson 12

Other supplemental reading choices:

POETRY: Mrs. Mangan will explain our new reading and writing unit! Listen to our POETRY assignment for today.

Watch the video below to see all the 3rd grade teachers’ heart maps. Have fun getting to know us better:)

3rd Grade Teachers Describe Their Heart Maps

Heart Map template – print out your heart map template to color and fill out

Here are some questions to help you get started heart mapping: Remember to write from the heart

What memories have you stored in your heart (they don’t have to be BIG or exciting memories. For example, the smell of molasses cookies baking in the oven at my grandmother’s house is an important memory to me because it was something she would always do.)
What people have been important to you – and why?
What are some experiences or events that you will never forget?
What happy or sad memories do you have?
What secrets do you keep in your heart?
What things or objects are important to you — for example, a tree in your backyard or a stuffed animal, etc.?
What’s at the center of your heart – you might want to place the most important people, memories, and experiences in the center?
Ask yourself if you want to keep some things inside your heart and less important things on the outside of your heart.
Do you want to draw more than one heart – good and bad; happy and sad; secret and open – and include different things inside each heart?
Do different colors represent different emotions, events, and relationships?

Your heart map is due Wednesday. Remember to post in your E-Learning Slideshow under ELA. I will go over the Seesaw activity with you by Wednesday.

WRITING:

Also, please remember to post on your own blog  about your reading work if you haven’t done so yet. You can explain that every story has a story mountain and you can include a picture of the one you are either creating or created. Another idea would be to post a list of problems and your character’s reactions to the problems.  Another option could be to add a relationship timeline that shows positive and negative relationships to the main character. Last, maybe add your secondary character chart Secondary Character Organizer: Are they advisors, sidekicks, or challengers? Your blog post should be a reflection about what you are learning and doing as a reader. Please remember to include a picture of one of these jots. This is due Friday.

MATH:

Today we will review and summarize AREA concepts that we completed over the past two weeks.  Please watch the Math Antics video below to capture the big ideas. Afterwards, please watch another video to help visualize the different measurements of square units. It is important to remember to label the correct square units when using area. Last, complete the three word problems.

SOCIAL STUDIES:

Photograph Analysis: In this video led by Mrs. Luciano, there is an example of analyzing a photograph/illustration using the See, Think, Wonder template that we have utilized in our science units of study. You will learn how to analyze a photograph/illustration by making observations about the people, objects and activities. You will then learn how to look at the “main idea” of the photograph by thinking about what activities you observed happening in the picture. Then some example wonderings are shared with you based on the illustration.

Watch this video FIRST: Photo Analysis Lesson:

A google slideshow has been shared with you showing the next photograph/illustration you will be analyzing using the See, Think, Wonder template.

Reading:

Yesterday we had a great conversation about secondary characters! I hope everyone is able to find a way to chat with their book club members. It is always easier to discuss books with friends and help each other with this type of reading work. If are not able to connect, please  practice the reading work yourself with your independent book. Here are some questions to guide you from our lessons:

  • Did you find the conflicts/problems that your character is facing?
  • Are you plotting on a story mountain?
  • Did you find the turning point where your character faced his/her problem?
  • How did your character change or solve his/her problem?
  • How did your character react to the problems? Remember to list the problems and reactions on a separate sheet of paper to discuss with your book club members.
  • Did you meet a secondary character?
  • Did you make a separate secondary character story mountain?
  • How does the secondary character help the main character (advisor, sidekick, challenger) Here’s an organizer to help jot this information: Secondary Character Organizer

We are starting a new Social Studies unit on Cultural Universals. We will be studying the five categories of universals: Politics, Social Aspects, Economics, Beliefs and Cultural Arts. During our Zoom session today we will learn more about this.

This will be a long-term project that we think you will really enjoy! All cultures, within a country and around the world, share certain ideas and ways of life, these are Cultural Universals. We may all have different types of dance, but we all dance. We may all have different ways of dressing, but we all wear clothes!

The third grade team invites you think about your life in Scarsdale. What are the ways you get from place to place, what does your family value, do you celebrate any specific holidays? Some answers you will be able to find on your own, others you will need to ask your family and some you may need to use the internet to research. Good luck!

The Google Slides called, Cultural Universals Project, has been placed in your Social Studies folder for you already. Feel free to fill it out directly on the slides (erase the lines and type your answers) or print it out to hand write the information.

Friday, March 20 E-Learning

Please play my video first for directions for the day:

Happy Friday! We made it through our first week of E-Learning and I couldn’t be prouder of all of your efforts! In order for everyone to receive participation credit, I need to see your work posted on your E-Learning Google slides moving forward. At the end of this blog post,  I will provide a checklist of all the activities that we did this week.

Remember to plan out your day. Do an assignment. Take a mental break (go outdoors, listen to music, play a board game – whatever you need.) Then come back and tackle another assignment. That seems to be the best approach and one where you can get the most out of your day! Any questions? Write them here: E-Learning Questions

Reading- Because of Winn Dixie Read Aloud

I am trying something different today. I recorded myself reading Because of Winn Dixie.  It isn’t the same as being in class with you ( I really miss our read-alouds together). However, I thought it will be a good idea to continue our reading lessons for our Character Studies Unit.  I pushed out a Google Doc in your drive, it is in your reading folder , with 3 links. Each link is a chapter read by me. In chapter 11, I didn’t do such a great job turning the pages for you to read alongside me, but I promise I will get better with this:) Please listen to chapters 10-12 by Monday. Next week we will continue with our read-aloud and I will also prepare mini-lessons with you soon.

MATH- PERIMETER PRACTICE

We have been focusing on area of a shape. We know that area is the space inside a shape measured in square units. Units can be square inches (in.), square centimeters (cm.), square feet (ft.) and so on. Many times to find the area you just need to multiply length times width (L x W) or just count up the squares inside.

Perimeter is another type of measurement that we can use to determine a shapes’s size. Yesterday we explored this on Khan Academy. We learned that perimeter is the distance AROUND an object and it is measured in units. Units can be inches, centimeters, feet and so on. Take a look at Mrs. Luciano’s video below. You will see future tutorial videos made from any of our 3rd grade teachers. Isn’t that exciting?!

Thursday, March 19th E-Learning

Check out the video below before reading the blog: Expand the screen on the lower right corner

I have been so impressed with the time you have put in and the dedication you are showing to this E-Learning. I know it is a big change, but you are rising to the challenge! If you didn’t finish work from past blogs, please go back to the blog posts to get them. I noticed some students still need to complete Brainpop, SeeSaw, and write the final essay for Ruby the Copycat.

Here is another resource for reading. Choose the book and have it read to you. There are some great picture books to read.  As you read, you can climb the story mountain and think about the literary essay work have done.

Parents can log on to One More Story at home in two ways. This applies to both computers and mobile devices through any browser.

  1. Go to app.onemorestory.com

  • Reminder: you need to hit “Log In” at the top right hand side, select “I am a student” and our class code is: 3degrazia
  • Once there, you will need to access the March/April edition and read the story “Enemy Pie”.
  • Throughout the story you will see “Pause and Think” questions.  Copy and paste those questions on a new slide behind the ELA section of your “E-Learning Slideshow” and answer the questions. Happy Reading 🙂
CONTINUE SPELLING~

I assigned all groups their spelling work for the week. Go to Heathcote Gateway to Words Their Way www.pearsonrealize.com. All activities are due by Friday.

Here’s another Screencastify to show you another literary essay how Ruby changes from the beginning to the end of the story.  Press play and I hope this helps.

MATHINTRO TO PERIMETER~ COMPLETE UNFINISHED WORK FROM PREVIOUS POSTS (SEESAW OR WORKBOOK PAGES)

Yesterday I was so excited to hear your voices on SeeSaw. I heard a lot of great explanations.  I posted comments to the students that posted already.  Please read them:) If you didn’t have a chance to do this activity please complete it by the end of the week. Continue to complete REFLEX. I am happy to report we are up to 178,787 facts solved. WOW!

Now that you have worked a lot with area, there is another way in geometry that we think about the space of a shape. That is the perimeter. The perimeter is the distance around the outside of a shape. Learn about and practice perimeter with our favorite, Khan Academy. Complete all the videos and practice, which is listed on the left hand side.

Khan Academy-Perimeter Introduction

Continue to practice area by completing workbook pages:

pp166-168 (Remember to post the workbook pages in the E-Learning Slides under math, include the date and pages in the heading).

SOCIAL STUDIES- HOW DO WE LEARN ABOUT HISTORY?

In the upcoming weeks we will be learning all about history and culture. Today I want to see your thoughts about the subject. In the E-Learning Slideshow, add a few pages in the Social Studies section to write your answers. The title can be, History. Put the date on the slide(s) as well.

  1. How would you define history? What does that mean if something is history?
  2. Brainstorm how we learn about history. (Don’t forget about places you can go!) Make a list.
    • Books, internet, etc…
  3. Write WHY we learn about history. Why is history important for us to learn about?
  4. BONUS: Create additional slides with any places you have been that have helped you learn about history. Feel free to include pictures from the internet or from your actual experience and writing telling us how that resource helped you learn about history.

Wednesday, March 18th E-Learning

I have some new activities for today. As always, you can continue to work on Reflex Math, Typing Club, Tynker, any of the math or ELA games from my webpage or blog. Keep reading the books you have at home, or use Epic to continue reading digitally.

I have been reviewing your literary essays on Ruby the Copycat. It looks like we need to review a few things.  I made a Screencastify to point out the different structures and development of such an essay. I used a student’s writing piece from a few years ago to show as an example. Make sure to expand the screen so it appears larger, then press play. I will show another one if you find this helpful. You may also find this video in your drive to review. Please let me know if you would like another example on the E-Learning padlet.

Poetry

A new genre of study. Poetry can be very different and possibly more challenging than reading prose, or the typical way you read text in books or articles. While prose is organized into paragraphs, poetry is organized into stanzas.

Check out, “The Wind”.  I made a Google Slides presentation to view the poem and the questions.  I would suggest printing the poem, so it is easier to answer the questions.  Type your answers in the E-Learning Slideshow in the ELA section with the heading “The Wind” and today’s date.
