Writers, today’s work is all about the setting of your fantasy story. From focusing on this lesson you will learn the many ways in which the setting is important. Use that understanding to build your setting and grow your thinking.

On this day in 1935 Babe Ruth hit the 714th and final home run of his career at Forbes Field in Pittsburgh while playing for the Boston Braves against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Writing: Imaginative Narrative #5

A famous author once said that as a writer, you should know your main character so well that at any given time, you’d know how much change he/she has in their pocket. We may not know the answer to that question, but today we are going to dig deeper into our main characters and get to know them better. Much better!

READ: PADLET DAY~ Read your fantasy book for 20-30 minutes

Remember to have 1 cover  uploaded to your padlet and write across all of the columns, not just one column.  Also, it is important not to report but to think deeply about your book.  If one person reports something (for example character names) , then you should add to the post your thoughts and text evidence to support your thinking about those characters. 

Everyone in the group should not repeat the setting:

  • Think about why the author chose the setting?
  • How does the setting affect your characters?
  • Why is the setting important?

When listing the problems, the same is true. Don’t repeat the same problem your club members already posted. Instead add on to your partners posts and either agree or disagree, but provide more text evidence in your thinking. Your posts should reflect 15-20 minutes of thinking to receive excellent participation credit.

Minor weather temperatures can impact the clockwork’s metal and pendulum. Observe the bells as they toll at 118 decibels, which is almost as loud as a jet plane.

Math: Word problems 

Today we are going to be tackling word problems that focus on time intervals. You will be using an open number line to figure out how much time has passed, the start or the end time of situations. Make sure you have pencil and paper so that you can try these strategies out as we move through this tutorial. I encourage you to review over parts of this video tutorial by pressing pause and going back over it. Good luck mathematicians!

On Monday the country will be celebrating Memorial Day. For many they call this day the “start of summer” or think of it as an enjoyable day off from school and work to BBQ with your families. But the day is much more than that. Read the article, “Celebrating Memorial Day” to see how Americans honor the brave men and women who died while serving their country.

He is one of the greatest players of all time. He once said, “I was born for soccer, just as Beethoven was born for music.” Did you know his real name is Edson Arantes do Nascimento? You can learn more about this football genius by watching the film, Pele, Birth of a Legend.

WRITING: FANTASY: IMAGINATIVE NARRATIVE #3

Authors often learn from other writers and use specific pieces of writing as their mentor text. Today you will explore a story that will become a mentor text for us, map it out on a story mountain and look closely at the elements of fantasy writing. This is a two day assignment as there are several parts. 

DAY 1:

In this lesson you will be learning how to convert time from hours to minutes and minutes to hours. You will need a pencil and paper to actively participate in the lesson and complete some of the work alongside this tutorial. Social Studies: Secondary versus Primary Sources

There has been a lot of talk about primary sources the last few weeks. But what about secondary sources? Aren’t they pretty great too? Watch today’s video to explore what makes secondary sources so useful.

Complete the Task Cards project we started last week. Read each card, determine whether it is a primary or secondary source and record your answer on the Recording Sheet. Then check your answers by scanning the QR code using a smartphone camera. Show us your Recording Sheet either on your May E-Learning Slideshow or on the Seesaw assignment.

On this day in 1927 Charles Lindbergh took off from Roosevelt Field in Long Island, NY, flying the “Spirit of St. Louis” on an epic flight from New York to Paris. It was a milestone in flying aviation history. He completed the 33-hour, 30-minute flight and landed at Le Bourget Airport, Paris on the evening of 21 May. The Spirit of St. Louis is an artifact that is housed in the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum. Watch this video to see Charles Lindbergh’s plane being lowered to the floor of the museum to be inspected and a plan made for preservation.

WRITING: FANTASY

You don’t always need a long time to tell a great story. Today we are looking at a few Disney animated shorts to study how much detail can be packed into just a few minutes.

Watch the Introduction Video to learn how to get started on this learning opportunity. 

Watch these films and think about the communication that is happening in each one.

Think about the communication that is happening in each one:

  • How are the characters communicating with one another?
  • How do we know?
  • Think body language, facial expressions, sounds (how might you describe this sound?).
  • How can this help to inform your fantasy writing?

When you are done watching all of the short films, complete slides 6-9 that are placed in your Writing folder called, Pixar Study. You can add your thinking right on those slides, as they are in your own folder. Copy and paste them into your E-Learning Slideshow.

 

READ 20-30 minutes book club book #1: Today you have your bingo board activity with your book partnerships. Make sure to share the numbered activity you are doing and post your work to your class seesaw activity. Please make sure to choose an activity you haven’t already completed.

Since we have been thinking so much about setting with out work with fantasy, why not try a setting-based activity today?

5. Build the setting for the story. Use Legos, PlayDough, looseparts, blocks, whatever materials you have access to.
10. Create a map of the setting in whatever medium you’d like: watercolors, colored pencils, chalk, pencil, markers, etc.

23. Sketch your favorite scene with as many details as you can. Write at least one paragraph telling why it is your favorite.

MATH: Elapsed Time

Watch the video below to learn about elapsed time. Elapsed time is the amount of time that passes from the beginning of an event to its end. You will find the duration of a time interval using a clock face and a timeline as a tool. Timelines are a way to visualize what is happening as the hour and minute hands move around the clock face. You will also understand elapsed time better when going from A.M. to P.M. or from P.M. to A.M 

 

On workbook page 118 you may need extra space to make a timeline to help you visualize the amount of time that has passed.

On this day in 2007 United States treasure hunters discovered a shipwreck off the coast of Cornwall in the United Kingdom. The ship had a record haul of over $500 million worth of gold and silver. A shipwreck expert guessed that the wreck was that of the Merchant Royal that sank in 1642 off the Islands of Scilly. Treasure hunters travel far and wide to find what they are looking for. Nicholas Cage plays Ben Gates, a historian and treasure hunter in the movie National Treasure. It’s worth watching and so good, they made three!

READING – Reading Fantasy Book Clubs

Today during our zoom session, we will go over our new May e-learning slideshow (purple) and I changed around some book club groups.

You will be given a new list of three choices to choose from.  As a club, we have to remind ourselves of our responsibilities to our book club partners:

  • Make sure you create a clear plan of reading assignments. During our class zooms (Monday, Wednesday and Friday) we will be doing breakout rooms. You can schedule your reading assignments to be completed by those days.
  • You work hard to complete the padlet posts, writing thoughtful jots that reflect your deep thinking around fantasy.
  • You choose a new Reading Bingo Board activity from your list during each new bingo day.
  • You make sure to keep a journal or notebook where you can record your thinking so that those ideas can steer your book club conversations. 
  • And MOST IMPORTANTLY: you are a positive participant throughout the book club experience. You practice:
    • Good active listening skills
    • Complete your assignments, which include the assigned reading
    • Engage in positive book discussions
    • HAVE FUN!

 

WRITING: FANTASY

Famous authors engage in a process of Brainstorming and Collecting Ideas. That’s what today’s work is all about. While you may have a certain character or storyline in mind, it’s important that you continue to collect new ideas before settling on the final one. Today you will be using two graphic organizers focused on characters and settings. These will help you to stretch your creative muscles and formulate new ideas that will be collected in a notebook. 

First, watch this overview video and you will learn how important Brainstorming is to writing your best story.  

Watch the video on slide 2 to help plan your fantasy writing. It is about 3 minutes long. I will put the slides in your writing folder too. I also included the digital notebook in your writing folder in your Google Drive:  Imaginative Narrative #2 Slides

MATH: TIME- HOURS AND MINUTES

Today you will practice reading an analog clock to the hour and to 1 minute.  Watch the video below to learn different ways to read an analog clock.  Maybe you can go outside today and draw a clock using sidewalk chalk.  Can you make your clock into quarters?

CHALLENGE: Try all 3  activities today (hop, run around your house, sit without talking) to feel how long 1 minute is.  Set a timer to 1 minute to help you. Was 1 minute longer than you expected?

Extra Ways to Practice Time 🙂 

  • Have fun and practice different times by looking at an analog clock and digital clock
  • Have fun playing this game with a sibling or family member. The game focuses on reading analog clocks to the hour and half hour.  You will need a die and 2 game pieces to play.

Social Studies: Primary Source Scavenger Hunt

Today you will be investigating a text called, “Using Primary Sources” that has been assigned to you on Epic. Take your time, enjoy the book and along the way study the different types of primary sources that are explained to you. Good luck historians! 

 

Seesaw assignment

When you are finished with the text, go back into it and go on a primary source scavenger hunt! Using the chart provided on Seesaw and on Slides, fill out as many spaces you can, determining whether the primary source you found was a photograph, document or artifact. Then answer the question, “Which one of these primary sources would you most like to see in real life and why?”

SMART FACT

On this day in 1980 Mount St. Helens located in the Cascade Range in Washington State,  erupted and blasted 1,300 ft off it’s top that sent hot mud, gas and ashes running down it’s slopes. The explosion sent plumes of dark gray ash some 60,000 feet in the air which blocked out the rays from the sun making it seem like night over eastern Washington. Learn more about molten rock and lava by watching this brief video.

Have fun watching John Collins make paper airplanes. Watch the video to learn about his creations. The first two minutes you can view his new World Record for longest distance to fly a paper airplane. Three minutes into the video he shows you how to make one type of paper airplane.

  • STEM- Build a paper Airplane revisited – Test out your skills building some paper airplanes. 
    • Which type went the furthest? 
    • How far did it go?

Smart Fact

On this day in 1618 German astronomer Johannes Kepler discovered the third of his three planetary laws, his “harmonics law”. Kepler’s third law (the Harmonic Law), relates the orbital period of a planet (that is, the time it takes a planet to complete one orbit) to its mean distance from the Sun. This law states that the closest planets travel at the greatest speeds and have the shortest orbital periods. If this is his third law, what are the first and second you ask? Watch this NASA video to learn about Kepler and his “out of this world” discoveries.

Today you will be traveling back to Ancient Greece through TrueFlix! As you read the text, “Ancient Greece” explore the different photographs and drawings that make this non-fiction text so captivating. Watch the video above on instructions how to access TrueFlix, and how to complete the graphic organizer for this text. There are two ways to show us your work, one by copying and pasting your graphic organizer into your own Slideshow and the other is on Seesaw

On this day in 1787 Delegates gathered in Philadelphia to draw up the US Constitution. While the Constitution was the final result of this meeting, the delegates’ original plan was to re-write the Articles of Confederation (the first set of rules for our country) but that didn’t work out once they realized how many flaws the original set of rules had.
