READING – Reading Fantasy Book Clubs

Today during our zoom session, we will go over our new May e-learning slideshow (purple) and I changed around some book club groups.

You will be given a new list of three choices to choose from.  As a club, we have to remind ourselves of our responsibilities to our book club partners:

  • Make sure you create a clear plan of reading assignments. During our class zooms (Monday, Wednesday and Friday) we will be doing breakout rooms. You can schedule your reading assignments to be completed by those days.
  • You work hard to complete the padlet posts, writing thoughtful jots that reflect your deep thinking around fantasy.
  • You choose a new Reading Bingo Board activity from your list during each new bingo day.
  • You make sure to keep a journal or notebook where you can record your thinking so that those ideas can steer your book club conversations.
  • And MOST IMPORTANTLY: you are a positive participant throughout the book club experience. You practice:
    • Good active listening skills
    • Complete your assignments, which include the assigned reading
    • Engage in positive book discussions
    • HAVE FUN!

WRITING: FANTASY

Famous authors engage in a process of Brainstorming and Collecting Ideas. That’s what today’s work is all about. While you may have a certain character or storyline in mind, it’s important that you continue to collect new ideas before settling on the final one. Today you will be using two graphic organizers focused on characters and settings. These will help you to stretch your creative muscles and formulate new ideas that will be collected in a notebook.

First, watch this overview video and you will learn how important Brainstorming is to writing your best story.

Watch the video on slide 2 to help plan your fantasy writing. It is about 3 minutes long. I will put the slides in your writing folder too. I also included the digital notebook in your writing folder in your Google Drive:  Imaginative Narrative #2 Slides

Characters and settings:Graphic Organizers to print

MATH: TIME- HOURS AND MINUTES

Today you will practice reading an analog clock to the hour and to 1 minute.  Watch the video below to learn different ways to read an analog clock.  Maybe you can go outside today and draw a clock using sidewalk chalk.  Can you make your clock into quarters?

CHALLENGE: Try all 3  activities today (hop, run around your house, sit without talking) to feel how long 1 minute is.  Set a timer to 1 minute to help you. Was 1 minute longer than you expected?

Workbook Pages to complete:

Complete both workbook pages and insert in your new May E-Learning Slideshow (purple)

Extra Ways to Practice Time 🙂

  • Have fun and practice different times by looking at an analog clock and digital clock
  • Have fun playing this game with a sibling or family member. The game focuses on reading analog clocks to the hour and half hour.  You will need a die and 2 game pieces to play.
  • Here is a printable analog clock to help you understand the different parts of a clock:

Explore Time Games:

Social Studies: Primary Source Scavenger Hunt

Today you will be investigating a text called, “Using Primary Sources” that has been assigned to you on Epic. Take your time, enjoy the book and along the way study the different types of primary sources that are explained to you. Good luck historians!

Seesaw assignment

When you are finished with the text, go back into it and go on a primary source scavenger hunt! Using the chart provided on Seesaw and on Slides, fill out as many spaces you can, determining whether the primary source you found was a photograph, document or artifact. Then answer the question, “Which one of these primary sources would you most like to see in real life and why?”

SMART FACT

On this day in 1980 Mount St. Helens located in the Cascade Range in Washington State,  erupted and blasted 1,300 ft off it’s top that sent hot mud, gas and ashes running down it’s slopes. The explosion sent plumes of dark gray ash some 60,000 feet in the air which blocked out the rays from the sun making it seem like night over eastern Washington. Learn more about molten rock and lava by watching this brief video.

Smart Fact

On this day in 1618 German astronomer Johannes Kepler discovered the third of his three planetary laws, his “harmonics law”. Kepler’s third law (the Harmonic Law), relates the orbital period of a planet (that is, the time it takes a planet to complete one orbit) to its mean distance from the Sun. This law states that the closest planets travel at the greatest speeds and have the shortest orbital periods. If this is his third law, what are the first and second you ask? Watch this NASA video to learn about Kepler and his “out of this world” discoveries.

Smart Fact

On this day in 1787 Delegates gathered in Philadelphia to draw up the US Constitution. While the Constitution was the final result of this meeting, the delegates’ original plan was to re-write the Articles of Confederation (the first set of rules for our country) but that didn’t work out once they realized how many flaws the original set of rules had. READING/WRITING: POETRY ~ ONOMATOPOEIA

Please watch Mrs. Mangan’s video on onomatopoeia. You will learn how onomatopoeia brings words to life.

Poetic Device: Onomatopoeia

Read 10 minutes or so for poetry

These poems each include at least one onomatopoeia; words that imitate the sound of the object or action they refer to. Read the poems in this website to find some examples. Examples in kid’s writing

Congrats! Our class read 480 books in Epic so far:)

Other Poetry Websites:

  • Go to EPIC  https://www.getepic.com/students and use the code mru9731. if you have not logged in yet.  I have a new collection of poetry books for you to read too.

Please complete 20 minutes of independent reading.  Don’t forget about Raz Kids, Storyworks Jr., Scholastic News, Epic, True Flix, and e-books on the library databases.

Your science reading today can count towards your 30 minutes:)

MATH: MASS AND WEIGHT ~WORD PROBLEMS GRAMS

Watch Mrs. Luciano’s video below. This is a lesson on word problems using gram units. You will be expected to draw a bar model, label it correctly with all parts (known and unknown information) and then solve for it. The examples are provided for you in the lesson and then one problem from your workbook pages is solved so you know what is expected of you.

Complete workbook pages 15-16. If you need more time, this can be due on Friday.  I am expecting bar models, show your algorithm work, and answer statement.

Copy and paste option:Workbook p15-16

NOTE: #9 is long division…you can skip or if you want to challenge yourself…go for it:)

When making bar models, the print option is always easiest. If you do not have ink to print, you can certainly do the digital bars similar to how Mrs. Luciano shows you in the video.  However, another option would be to write on a blank paper and make your own bar models, show your work, and include your answer statement. If you choose this way, please be neat and number your problems so I can easily follow your work. Then take a picture and insert your image into your E-learning slideshow under math.

Print option: WB 15-16

Thursday, April 2~ E-learning

Good Morning!  Please listen to the video first, then read the post for closer details. It may help to make a checklist of the assignments for the day to help you manage your time and completion.

Remember to plan out your day. Do an assignment. Take a mental break (go outdoors, listen to music, play a board game – whatever you need.) Then come back and tackle another assignment. That seems to be the best approach and one where you can get the most out of your day!

Please remember to visit the specials websites:  Heathcotegateway E-Learning option

Please make sure you visit Dr. Schultz’s website too. She has an assignment waiting for you: Dr Schultz’s webpage

Mrs. Sorenson wanted us to remind you about all the reading opportunities (Reading Materials) she has on her E-Learning page. Please remember on the Library Databases you can read ebooks from the library’s catalog.

REMINDER: After completing your work everyday  PLEASE press share and include my email, so I can view your slides promptly. I only received 8 slides yesterday.

WRITING:

Also, please remember to post on your own blog  about your reading work if you haven’t done so yet. You can explain that every story has a story mountain and you can include a picture of the one you are either creating or created. Another idea would be to post a list of problems and your character’s reactions to the problems Characters Face and React to Trouble.  Another option could be to add a relationship timeline that shows positive and negative relationships to the main character. Last, maybe add your secondary character chart Secondary Character Organizer: Are they advisors, sidekicks, or challengers? Your blog post should be a reflection about what you are learning and doing as a reader. Please remember to include a picture of one of these jots. This is due tomorrow.

Math: Area and perimeter word problems

Complete the next two pages.  Problems #7-8 in Level 1 and then Level 2 #1-3. Copy and paste the two pages into your own slideshow to answer under math. Or print and add to slides later.

READING: It is important to understand the story elements of fiction books. The chart below is very helpful to remember.

Last week, we learned as readers near the end of a story, they expect the tension to build to a boiling point (climax). When this happens, readers pay attention to how the main character is tested, notice how the character reacts, and thinks.

“Why is this important to the character’s journey?”

We talked about how Opal was not only tested if she lost Winn Dixie, but she was tested with her relationship with the Preacher. This was important to Opal’s journey because her dad would always put his head back in his turtle shell. This is the first time her dad showed emotion about her mom and Opal realizes he misses her too. Now she has her dad and new people in her life. Opal doesn’t feel as lonely anymore.

Below is an anchor chart you should use to help guide you with your reading work:

anchor chart guide to make a story mountain (Print or refer to this chart to help you with your reading work)

Read an independent realistic fiction (character study) book for 30 minutes.

Please listen to “Because of Winn Dixie”  chapters 25-26  (in your reading folder) before you watch Mrs. Luciano’s reading  lesson below. These are the final chapters of the book. Enjoy!

Mrs. Luciano will teach you as a story comes to an end, the main character resolves the big problem. Readers notice this and they ask: “What strength did this character draw on to solve this problem?”  AND  “How has the character changed?”

Mrs. Luciano will read chapter 26 after the lesson. The beginning of chapter 26 Mrs. Luciano will model how to pause and think. Please follow along. You can stop watching the video at 4:32.  However, if you would like to hear chapter 26 again, then you may listen to Mrs. Luciano to the end of this video!

I have shared in your Social Studies folder the two slides I’d like you to copy and paste to your E-Learning slideshow. After watching the video you will know how to complete them.

Thought Prompts – Lesson 12

POETRY: Mrs. Mangan will explain our new reading and writing unit! Listen to our POETRY assignment for today.

Watch the video below to see all the 3rd grade teachers’ heart maps. Have fun getting to know us better:)

3rd Grade Teachers Describe Their Heart Maps

Heart Map template – print out your heart map template to color and fill out

Here are some questions to help you get started heart mapping: Remember to write from the heart

What memories have you stored in your heart (they don’t have to be BIG or exciting memories. For example, the smell of molasses cookies baking in the oven at my grandmother’s house is an important memory to me because it was something she would always do.)
What people have been important to you – and why?
What are some experiences or events that you will never forget?
What happy or sad memories do you have?
What secrets do you keep in your heart?
What things or objects are important to you — for example, a tree in your backyard or a stuffed animal, etc.?
What’s at the center of your heart – you might want to place the most important people, memories, and experiences in the center?
Ask yourself if you want to keep some things inside your heart and less important things on the outside of your heart.
Do you want to draw more than one heart – good and bad; happy and sad; secret and open – and include different things inside each heart?
Do different colors represent different emotions, events, and relationships?

Your heart map is due Wednesday. Remember to post in your E-Learning Slideshow under ELA. I will go over the Seesaw activity with you by Wednesday.

WRITING:

Also, please remember to post on your own blog  about your reading work if you haven’t done so yet. Last, maybe add your secondary character chart Secondary Character Organizer: Are they advisors, sidekicks, or challengers? Your blog post should be a reflection about what you are learning and doing as a reader. Please remember to include a picture of one of these jots. This is due Friday.

MATH:

Today we will review and summarize AREA concepts that we completed over the past two weeks.  Please watch the Math Antics video below to capture the big ideas. Afterwards, please watch another video to help visualize the different measurements of square units. It is important to remember to label the correct square units when using area. Last, complete the three word problems.

SOCIAL STUDIES:

Photograph Analysis: In this video led by Mrs. Luciano, there is an example of analyzing a photograph/illustration using the See, Think, Wonder template that we have utilized in our science units of study. You will learn how to analyze a photograph/illustration by making observations about the people, objects and activities. You will then learn how to look at the “main idea” of the photograph by thinking about what activities you observed happening in the picture. Then some example wonderings are shared with you based on the illustration.

Watch this video FIRST: Photo Analysis Lesson:

A google slideshow has been shared with you showing the next photograph/illustration you will be analyzing using the See, Think, Wonder template.
