Monday, April 27 ~ E-learning

Good Morning 3D! I hope you had a wonderful, restful weekend.  Today is marvelous Monday!

Please watch the video first, then reread the blog post for closer details. NOTE: On this morning message video, I mis-spoke and said the Generation Genius video instead of Mystery Science video for today’s science work.

Remember to plan out your schedule for the day with breaks.  Try to plan around a 9-3 school day, so you can finish your work early. Also, use the checklist at the end of our post to make sure you completed your assignments for the day. If you have any problems completing anything please leave us a comment on your E-learning slides to keep us posted about any conflicts. Last, it is VERY important you watch all videos that we post since these are our lessons to help you complete assignments.

Please remember to visit the specials websites:  Heathcotegateway E-Learning option

REMINDER: Mrs. Gelosa and Mrs. Dolma are commenting and checking assignments on your E-learning slides daily. Please read the comments and “reply” as needed. I will write a recap on Friday for you to review.

MATH: COMPARING CAPACITY

Watch this video first to recap our work from last week and move into our new unit of study. Can you guess what that might be?

Watch this video below to learn about another measurement called capacity.  Capacity is the amount of liquid a container can hold.  You will watch a demonstration how different containers can have different shapes and sizes and a variety of capacities.

Look around your house for different containers. Can you find the capacities and can you compare them?  Show us what you learn today and post it on seesaw. Remember to ask an adult if it is ok to do this and be mindful with your water.

Complete workbook pages 37-39:

Copy and paste: WB pages 37-39

Print option: capacity wb37-39

SCIENCE: Weather and Climate due Wednesday

Please watch the video in its entirety so you’ll be prepared with all that you need to enjoy this learning opportunity with Mystery Doug. You’ll learn how to spot a storm and create a booklet that highlights different types of clouds. This is a two day assignment, it is due on Wednesday

In this Mystery, students learn how to make predictions about the weather by observing clouds and their changes. In the activity, Storm Spotter’s Guide, you will create a small book to record your notes, identify different types of clouds, and think about wind direction to figure out if a storm is heading your way.

Steps to complete:

  • Weather & Climate Part One Slides are in your science folder.
  • Print booklet : mystery-science before watching the video
  • The link to watch Mystery Doug “Stormy Skies” is on the slides.
  • Watch video and Doug will prompt step by step along the way (he will show you how to make the Storm Spotter’s guidebook)
  • Notice at the end of the video he will prompt you with a picture, you will guess, then check your answers with “Here’s what we think…”
  • Post a video of your Storm Spotter’s Guide on Seesaw

SMART FACT

On this day in 1810 Ludwig van Beethoven composed his famous piano piece Für Elise. It is probably the most famous piano piece ever composed.  If you are not familiar with the beautiful

ELA- POETRY: GOOGLE DRAWINGS

Today, poets, your job is to select your favorite poem from the last few weeks of our poetry unit. Pick one that you are proud of and want to share for our Heathcote Virtual Art and Poetry Festival. Watch the video, and create your own Google Drawing in your Writing folder of your Drive to publish your poem.

You have both today and tomorrow to create your drawing. Please be sure that your spelling and punctuation are correct. Include your first name or your initials only.

Please complete 30 minutes of independent reading. If you would like, check out  Storyworks, Scholastic News, Epic and True Flix on the library databases. The book, “What is a Thunderstorm?” was assigned to you on Epic. Please complete this reading.

MATH- ADDING AND SUBTRACTING COMPOUND UNITS

Today we will continue to look at compound units kg and g.  You will learn a few strategies to help you add mass in kg and g or subtract g from k.  Please look closely at the different strategies mentioned in the video and decide which method works best for you.

NOTE: If regrouping while subtracting is difficult for you, please continue to practice this skill separately. Maybe practice subtraction problems without the units ahead of time. For ex, 127-38 or 456- 76. It is important to understand the renaming process.

**NOTE: math video corrections:

  • #14 b answer is 5kg 100g and
  • #15 I transcribed the problem wrong. The correct problem is 32kg -25kg 750g=6kg 250 g.

Please show your work on a separate sheet of paper and add to your E-Learning slides under math. Remember to be neat and label the pages and problems, so we can refer to your work and guide you if needed.

E-Learning

Hello Third Graders!

I hope you are all doing well. I am excited to share with you some activities you can do while we are out of school. I will begin posting activities on Monday, March 16th.

For all of the activities you can record your work in a Google Slideshow that was shared with you and placed in your Social Studies folder on Google Drive. This slideshow is called, E-Learning Slideshow.

In that slideshow you will see that it is separated by subject area. As you complete an activity, record your thinking in that area. Add new slides when you need to.

If access to a computer is challenging, or you would prefer to hand write your work, feel free to print out the activities and keep your work in a folder.

If you have any questions about the activities over the next few days please use Padlet to get in touch with me. Here is the Padlet link to ask your question. I will get back to you as soon as possible.

Bar Model Tutorials

Our class has been working hard learning about problem solving strategies.  We have become experts with addition and subtraction bar modeling with one-step and two-step problems.  Another way to learn more deeply about problem solving is to teach problem solving steps to others.  Our class made their first math tutorials on bar modeling using Screencastify.  Each student was assigned a word problem that was differentiated in the classroom.  Students worked with a partner to talk, analyze, and discuss the steps needed to solve the word problems. The written format became the script needed to later create a Google Slide to organize their thinking.  Mr. Casal worked with our class to create these Google Slides.  Once the Google Slides were completed, students learned about Screencastify to deliver their tutorial digitally.  We studied several tutorials from other teachers and speakers in order to learn how to make similar teaching videos. The students appreciated the power of knowledge that can be taught through these tutorials and wanted to be part of this digital world. Teaching a broader audience is very rewarding!

Please take a moment to view and learn from these wonderful bar model tutorials. I am so proud of our third grade students’ work and commitment. The link below will bring you to a YouTube playlist.  Have fun learning!
