Reflection Of Making The Product

Making the slide show wasn’t easy! You had to do lots of revisions and it took a lot of timing and presenting you’re presentations. Making  the script was not the best because that was even more work. I think that the script was very hard and not as fun as the slideshow. I liked the slideshow part of the project more then the script part.

Slide 1: Hi my name is Lucy, For my capstone project I wanted to research Makeup. My main inquiry question is How do makeup brands come up with new products and how does it get approved to be sold to consumers? I hope you enjoy my presentation!

Slide 2: The process of makeup can take really short, but it could take up to 2 years! There are 7 steps in making a product. The first step is the marketing brief. The marketing brief is when marketing teams define the product based on trends and customer needs. The second step is formulation. Formulation is when R&D teams create the products formulation based on the cost and chemical properties. The third step is sourcing. Sourcing means that it’s time to look for raw materials packaging suppliers following requirements and costs. The fourth step is packaging artwork. That means marketing and creative agency will design packaging artwork to catch consumers eyes and provide all the needed information. The fifth step is quality and compliance. That means That product safety is tested and regulatory affairs teams and gathers required dossier and documents. The sixth step is product validation. That means product prototype final approval is, formula, packaging design and compliance are checked before launch. The seventh and last step is launching! Now that the product is conformed to customers needs and its safe to use, its ready to be launched!

Slide 4: Makeup brands goal is to get their brands in popular stores so they can sell better. In my research I did not expect to find out that its very easy to get your brand into a store. To do that you can send them a nice email or you can call them! After that they will tell you if they are interested in your product and if they are you would send them a PR box. A PR box is a pretty box filled with your makeup. Then they review your products and depending on their opinion if they like it your product will be sold but if they don’t you ask another store!

Slide 5: The FDA approves the products. The FDA stands for the food and drug administration. The FDA approves cosmetics such as, Skin moisturizers, Perfumes, Lipsticks, Fingernail Polish, Cleansing Shampoo, Permanent waves, Hair Colors and Deodorants. Under the law, the FDA doesn’t need to approve the whole product the only thing they need to check for is to make sure the color additives are right. The requirements are, That the product is properly labeled and The use of the ingredients does not otherwise cause the cosmetic to be adulterated or misbranded under the laws the FDA enforces.

Slide 6: For my Site visit and interview I went to Milk Makeup HQ. It was a amazing experience and I would do it over and over again! It was so fun because I got to meet amazing people and see some really cool things. A lot of my information you see here is because of the interview and site visit.

Slide 7: A thing that you guys should know is that some brands do animal testing which is killing 100,000 to 200,000 innocent animals a year to the use of cosmetic testing. So next time your getting makeup  make sure you check the label to make sure it is animal testing free!

Answering My Main Inquiry Question

Have you ever put on makeup and then later think to yourself “I wonder what the process of making the real product is?” Well I did think that! For my Capstone project I wanted to research The making of makeup! I had so many wonders of all my questions! This is what my main inquiry question turned out to be,“How do makeup brands come up with new products and how does it get approved to be sold to consumers?” Then I came up with 5 sub questions that would help me answer my main inquiry question!

My first sub question is What are the steps of making the product and how long does it take? The first step is marketing brief. That means that marketing teams define the product based on trends and customer needs. The second step is formulation. That means R&D teams create the product formulation based on the requirements, Cost and Chemical properties. The third step is sourcing That means that it is time to look for raw materials and packaging suppliers following requirements and costs. The fourth step is packing artwork. The seventh and final step is New Product!!!! Now that the product is conformed to customers needs and its safe to use, its ready to be launched! So it can take 1 month but it can also take 2 years!

My next sub question is, How do brands choose shade names for products? Sometimes the name will have to do with something that means something to the company. Other times brands come up with names that are based on the formulas of the product. Some brands like to stick to a certain theme such as,funny, serious, happy, sad etc. When brands make shade names they have big meetings just to find a shade name! They start blurting out random names. Then they vote!

My next sub question is, What role does animal testing have in making makeup? The animals that are used to animal test is rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, rats and mice are just killed just for cosmetics. 100,000 to 200,000 animals are killed to animal testing a year. When they test they rub chemicals on their bare skin, they drip chemicals in their eyes and they force feed tubes down their throats. Due to animal testing it can cause, blindness, swollen eyes, sore bleeding, internal bleeding, organ damage, birth defects and the worst of all, death. Animal testing is not required there are so many alternatives but companies still do it!

My next sub question is, How do makeup brands get their products in specific stores such as, sephora, ulta etc. In my research I learned it wasn’t hard! You really just have to grab their attention! Some ways to do that is make a pretty PR package, send a nice email or you can call! Then they will review your products and see if they want them in their store!

My last sub question is, Who approves the products and what are the requirements? The people that approves the products are called,” The FDA” The FDA stands for The Food and Drug administration. The FDA approves products such as, Skin moisturizers, Perfumes, Lipsticks, Fingernail Polish, Cleansing Shampoo, Permanent waves, Hair Colors and Deodorants.

I learned so much about makeup! It was so fun to research about it because makeup is one of my passions and i love it so much! I hope that in the future I get another chance to do a research project that’s as much fun as capstone!

Interview

For my interview I went to  Milk makeup HQ. I interviewed pretty much everybody who worked there! I learned so much from it. I learned about how makeup is made, How they package makeup and more! I got some photos but not many because a lot of it was inspiration and new up coming things. I could do it over and over again! I can’t thank them enough for everything they did for me!

Choosing My Topic For Capstone

For the past few days we’ve been working on choosing our topics for capstone.

First we had to brainstorm ideas. The first we started filling out a form that said wishes and worries for capstone. Then we filled out a packet with our interest and expertise to get our minds going.

Then we filled out a Google dock of what our two most interest . after we chose one out of them and then studied it.

All in all, i’m super happy with my topic!!

Immigration #4

This project has been so fun. I really enjoyed it and I also think that it prepared me well for capstone. It was really fun and it taught me how to make an adobe spark video. I also liked how we put an interview into this project that just gave the project an extra fun part to it! I really hope we get to do more fun projects in the future and it was an amazing experience that every 5th grader should have!

Immigration #3

I Did my video for my interview about my babysitter sharon. We practiced our video on another project we did called rube goldberg, Anyway my video is 1 minute and 42 seconds. It has 14 slides and was so fun to make! This was also a great experience!

Immigration #2

I Interview my babysitter. When her i was in my kitchen eating breakfast!! I interviewed her on my phone in the app voice memos. It took me 3 minutes. I asked her 12 questions. She gave me a few pictures from her when she immigrated. It was a super fun experience!

Immagration blog post #1

Our class just recently started an immagration project! I am going to be interviewing my babysitter! She came from Jamacia! Pretty cool right!
Anyway I’m asking a series of questions some are, what were your feelings when you left? What was your first job in America?, who was your first American friend? How did the relationship become? And much more!
When I interview her I definitely will ask her for pictures and souvenirs!
I can’t wait for this interview! It’s going to be very interesting and it will help me learn more about immigration!

Rube Goldberg #6

My rube goldberg was a learning experience. I learned how to think out of the box and try new ways to do things! I definitely learned what it’s like to make a big puzzle to do a simple task! Maybe when I’m older I can try to build one that has electricity and stuff like that! I’m super sad it’s over but it’s ok because I had a great time doing it!
