Book Clubs 

Today we will be meeting at our Zoom to talk with your book clubs. If you would like to continue the conversation in a separate Zoom or Facetime call you are welcome to, as long as it is OK with your families and this is an on-topic conversation. Let me know if you would like me to join your conversation to help.

Come ready to talk and jot about the following ideas:

  • What happened in the part you read yesterday?
  • What was your favorite part of the book?
  • What character can you connect with? If you can’t, why not?
  • What role do the secondary characters play? Advisors, Sidekicks or Challengers?
  • What is confusing to you? What questions do you have?
  • What is a prediction you can make for today’s reading?

Fantasy

  • Read the story, “The Wishing Tree.” The Wishing Tree
  • Answer the 5 questions on Seesaw. Note- Each question is on a different page.
    • Use capitals and periods
    • Check for spelling
    • Use text evidence whenever possible
    • Read your work before submitting

 

Math- Paper Airplane measurement

Check out the “Paper Airplane Guy” to get some inspiration. He will show you how to build some paper airplanes and show you a real paper airplane competition.

  1. Test out your skills building 2 paper airplanes. Which type went the furthest? How far did it go?
    • Instructions on how to build different paper airplanes: Fold ‘N Fly
    • Fill out the data tables while you test our your 2 planes:

SOCIAL STUDIES: analyzing artifacts

Today you will be combining your knowledge of Ancient Greece and primary sources to analyze an artifact. Watch the video below to show the process. 

In order to complete the artifact analysis sheet you can choose one of the following:

  1. Edit with Kami (Look in your S.S. folder for this document.) **Let me know that you have done this so I know to look in your S.S. folder** 
  2. Copy and paste the slide into your own May E-Learning Slideshow: Slides to Copy or Analysis Sheet- To Print
  3. Complete the Seesaw assignment
Smart Fact

On this day in 1618 German astronomer Johannes Kepler discovers the third of his three planetary laws- his “harmonics law”. Kepler’s third law (the Harmonic Law), relates the orbital period of a planet (that is, the time it takes a planet to complete one orbit) to its mean distance from the Sun. This law states that the closest planets travel at the greatest speeds and have the shortest orbital periods. If this is his third law, what are the first and second you ask? Watch this NASA video to learn about Kepler and his “out of this world” discoveries.

Book Clubs 

Today you will complete a BINGO board activity for your book club book, along with reading the agreed upon amount. I am looking for some more challenging choices today. Please push yourself a bit more. Do some make-writing using lose parts! Is anyone up the challenge of #4, #5,# 8, or #13? I can’t wait to see your creations!

Please submit your Bingo board activity for today in this Seesaw assignment.

Theme

Watch “Lou,” a Pixar short film. It is about 4 minutes.  You may decide to watch this more than once to notice all the details in the film.

 

Add to the Padlet when you are ready. If possible, try to complete your jots before our Zoom class so we can have some great conversations about your ideas. Remember to add text evidence to your thinking and connect with any of your peers’ ideas similar to La Luna. Write your first name and your class code. Ex. Lindsay 3M

Today you will be traveling back to Ancient Greece through TrueFlix! As you read the text, “Ancient Greece” explore the different photographs and drawings that make this non-fiction text so captivating. Watch the video below on instructions how to access TrueFlix, and how to complete the graphic organizer for this text. There are two ways to show us your work, one by copy and pasting your graphic organizer into your own Slideshow and the other is on Seesaw.

  1. Watch the lesson video
  2. Heathcote Gateway to go to the library page—> Databases—> TruFlix
  3. Read the text, “Ancient Greece” found in the Ancient Civilizations section 
  4. Find 5 pictures in the text and think
    • “How does this picture help me learn about life at that time?” 
    • “Is the item in the picture a primary source or a secondary source?”
  5. Show us your graphic organizer:
    • Copy and paste your finished graphic organizer into your May E-Learning Slides OR
    • Complete the activity assigned to you on Seesaw

On this day in 1787 Delegates gathered in Philadelphia to draw up the US Constitution. While the Constitution was the final result of this meeting, the delegates’ original plan was to re-write the Articles of Confederation (the first set of rules for our country) but that didn’t work out once they realized how many flaws the original set of rules had.
