Math- composite Figures

Today we will talk more about composite figures, or irregular shapes. That is a shape that can be divided into more than one basic shape. For instance the letter H can be looked at like three rectangles put together.

Check out this Khan Academy Video and continue the exploration by watching the remainder of the videos and practices on the left hand side. Listen carefully because this is a tricky concept that we will continue to look at. There is no “worksheet” practice due today, just complete the practice from Khan Academy. Try your best, not to worry if you get some wrong, we will be spending the rest of the week practicing this.

SOCIAL STUDIES- Photograph Analysis

In this video, there is an example of analyzing a photograph/illustration using the See, Think, Wonder template that we have utilized in our science units of study. You will learn how to analyze a photograph/illustration by making observations about the people, objects and activities. You will then learn how to look at the “main idea” of the photograph by thinking about what activities you observed happening in the picture. Then some example wonderings are shared with you based on the illustration. Watch this video. Click on the Google slideshow showing the next photograph/illustration you will be analyzing using the See, Think, Wonder template. Copy and paste the slides into your own E-Learning Slideshow or print them out and upload them later. Due Tomorrow.

ELA: Role of Secondary characters

Please complete 30 minutes of independent reading. This reading, if fiction, will help you with your Seesaw activity today.

The main character in a fiction book has all types of people around him/her. Some are advisors, those who support them and give them advice. Others are sidekicks, people who are friends they have fun with! Lastly, some secondary characters are challengers. Those are usually the “enemies” in a text. The people who make the main character mad, upset or uncomfortable.

social studies- Cultural Universals of Scarsdale (Class Zoom Lesson @ 10:00)

Our next social studies unit will be about the Cultural Universals. What that means is that all cultures, within a country and around the world, share certain ideas and ways of life. We may all have different types of dance, but we all dance. We may all have different ways of dressing, but we all wear clothes!

The third grade team invites you think about your life in Scarsdale. What is the culture of Scarsdale? What are the ways you get from place to place, what does your family value, do you celebrate any specific holidays? Some answers you will be able to find on your own, others you will need to ask your family and some you may need to use the internet to research. Good luck!

The Google Slides called, Cultural Universals Project, has been placed in your Social Studies folder for you already. Feel free to fill it out directly on the slides or print it out to hand write the information.

Friday, March 20th E- Learning

Today, is Seesaw Friday! Today’s activities allow you some time to record your thinking both in writing and through your voice. I can’t wait to hear your thinking through your own voices.

Make sure you consult the Heathcote Gateway to ensure you are logging into Seesaw correctly. Mr. Casal has created a tutorial that will answer all your questions. You can use a computer or an iPad to use Seesaw.

Any questions? Post them here: E-Learning Questions

Ela-Book reviews

I am sure you have been reading up a storm these past few weeks. Today I want you to pick one of the best books you have read recently and think about giving it a review. A book review helps other readers decide if they want to read the book as well. Once we have everyone’s reviews we will have an amazing list to look at when we need help choosing a book.

Use this template before you record in Seesaw to brainstorm your review. Book Review Brainstorm

This is the background you will see when you record your review in Seesaw.

Once you have your review written, record your ideas by using your voice on the Seesaw activity I have assigned to you called, Book Review. Don’t forget to take a picture of the cover! Or even draw a picture of the cover and take a picture of your creation!

Math- draw your own area

In Seesaw you will see an activity called, Measuring Area. You will have to create three shapes all with the same area. Please explain in your recording how you found the area. Try to push yourself to think in terms of an array, like 2 sq. units  x 4 sq. units = 8 sq. units, instead of just counting the squares.

Follow the directions in Seesaw. Don’t forget to press the check mark when you are done to submit your answer.
