WRITING: Publishing your book and trailer

Today you will be creating your own Adobe Spark Videos. You’ve finished your scripts, they’ve  been approved by me and you are ready to go! Watch the lesson to remind yourselves about login directions and how to use Adobe Spark Video.

  1. Log in to Adobe Spark Video through the Heathcote Gateway 
  2. Create a new video project from scratch
  3. Create your trailer using your script 
  4. Download your trailer to your computer
  5. Upload your trailer to the Writing folder in your Drive
  6. Share the trailer with me when you are done 🙂

When you are ready to publish your book trailer to the “3rd Grade Fantasy Writing 2020” Padlet, watch this tutorial below. It will give you a step by step guide for you to follow and learn how to publish both your writing and your book trailer to the grade-wide Padlet. We suggest you watch the video through to the end and then when you are ready to follow the steps, go back and watch portions of the video, press pause, complete that step and press unpause to learn the next step. We cannot wait to see your completed projects! Good luck 3rd Grade Writers!

Please complete every column, if possible. Writing: Revising & Editing 

Writers you are all so close to publishing! Today you will take the time to review what you have written (and typed in a doc in your writing folder or digital notebook). Revision is about making changes to your story to make it better and Editing is about spelling and the mechanics of writing. It is helpful to have a partner or two to work with at this point to ask for their feedback and get their help with spelling & punctuation.

Math: Angles

In this lesson you will need a few items:

  1. A pair of scissors
  2. A pencil
  3.  A piece of paper
  4. A post it note

In this lesson you will learn about angles and how to name specific types of angles. You will be asked to frequently pause the video and practice the skill. Then you will click un-pause to see if your answer or solution matches Mrs. Luciano’s.

Writing: Wrapping it all up

Writers, you have reached the end! Literally, it is now time to start writing the end of your fantasy story. Watch the introductory video to learn about different ways you might end your story. And much like the introduction, it is best to try out a few different endings before choosing the one that fits your story best. If you haven’t started typing your story yet, please make that a priority today. You can ask for help with the typing if that makes it easier for you.

  • First, watch Imaginative Narrative #9 Video above with Mrs. Boyer
  • Use the slides as mentor texts: Imaginative Narrative #9 Slides
  • Write at least two different endings, then choose one that fits your story.
  • Share it on Seesaw tell me about your two versions, and why you chose this one

Today is an exciting day… you get the results of your surveys! Watch the lesson carefully to see how to get your data, how to fill out a data table, and how to fill out each graph.

**Note- I realized my horizontal axis is labeled incorrectly in the video. It should be labeled, “Opinion” and it is fixed on the slides in your math folder. My apologies!**

WRITING: Paying attention to the middle

Third grade writer’s, today’s work is all about the details. You will be reaching back into prior lessons, using mentor texts, and Pixar videos. All that you have been learning to do as a writer, will be put to use today. There is nothing to hand in today, however you should be starting to type your story (or ask someone to help you type) as it is easier to share with classmates that way. We will be publishing next week! Wahoo!

Today you will be introduced to a new graphing project. The first part of the project is to craft a survey question and then create a Google Form as a way to collect data. Then you will be sharing your survey link on a common Google Sheet. Lastly, you will be checking back to the Google Sheet to take your classmate’s surveys. Be sure to answer all of your classmates’ surveys and then you can branch out to the rest of the grade. 

  1. Go to the slides in your MATH folder called, “Graphing Project Day 1”
  2. Brainstorm 2 survey questions (Answer on Slide 6)
  3. Choose 1 final question (Answer on Slide 7)
  4. Create Google Form (Watch video for how)
  5. Share Google Form to Google Sheet (Slide 10) or Grade 3 Survey Questions Google Sheets 
  6. Take classmates’ surveys by returning to the Grade 3 Survey Questions Google Sheets

Third graders this is important work! The introduction grabs the reader’s attention and gets them interested in your story. Watch the introductory video CAREFULLY then review the slides to take a closer look at the many ways you can choose from to try your hand at writing your introduction.

MATH: Line plots

  • Watch this tutorial to learn more about how to take data and present it in another graph called a line plot. 
  • Make sure you watch the entire tutorial from beginning to end, as you will be instructed how to create a line plot and what is expected of you for your independent task.

A famous author once said that as a writer, you should know your main character so well that at any given time, you’d know how much change he/she has in their pocket. We may not know the answer to that question, but today we are going to dig deeper into our main characters and get to know them better. Much better!

Watch today’s video on the Bronx to learn about the location, some attractions, and a famous street called Arthur Avenue.  Today is day 1 to learn about this diverse borough. We will continue tomorrow to learn more about the Bronx’s cultural arts. The Bronx is home to many cultural institutions all of which are worth a visit.

Today, Pixar is famous for their imaginative shorts that use advanced technology to create their animations. Watch this clip, Three Little Pigs, to see how the art of animation has changed (yet the art of storytelling remains at the core).

What’s a “borough” anyway? It’s like a smaller city within our massive metropolis. NYC has five of them—the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island—each with dozens of neighborhoods lending their own local flavor. Today, please watch the introduction video to learn about the five boroughs that make up NYC.  How do we connect the boroughs?
