Learning From our Differences

Every year at, Heathcote elementary school we do something called learning from our differences. Learning from our differences is a day where someone who has a disability comes in and teaches the students about they’re disability.

Today a man named, Dennis Oehler came in and tought us about his disability. When Dennis came he seemed totally fine… He wasn’t deaf, he wasn’t blind, he was also walking perfectly. He seemed totally  fine.

When Dennis came to tell us about his story I was staring at him and thinking, does this guy really have a disability? But then the teachers told us to sit so he could talk. I have to admit, Dennis was a really funny guy.

Finally Dennis starting talking about his story! He said,”I was packing up to go home from work when my friend comes up tome and asks,”hey I got 2 hockey tickets wanna come?” And of course Dennis said,”ya sure!” So they went to the game and it was pouring rain. But the rain slowed them down so they came to the hockey game late. they went in and had lots of fun! But when the hockey game was over they were gonna go home. Since they parked in the very back of the parking lot they had to walk pretty far and they got soaked by the rain. They were about to go home but the engine wasn’t working.

That’s when Dennis stepped outside and called someone over. The person they pulled over and helped them and then they were on the highway. There was lots of traffic and so they had to wait and wait. Finally the traffic started moving and they were pulling into the rite lane when they’re engine stopped again. The traffic was moving but they weren’t The people behind them didn’t know what was happening so they started to honk they’re horn. Then Dennis went outside to move the car to the side by hand.

The person behind them couldn’t wait 30 seconds so they went around them. But the car behind Dennis didn’t see him and that’s when the car hit him. Dennis was taking to the hospital imediantly. When he woke up he found himself with a fake leg. When the hospital sent Dennis home Dennis didn’t leave the house for 3 months. But thats when his best friend dragged him to the Paralympics. Dennis found it really cool and thats howhe became a marathon runner in the Paralympics!

Colonial Day

On December 15 we had Colonial Day. Colonial Day is when all the 4th grade dresses up like the colonials did and we do all these fun things like, tin smithing, Dame school, toys and games, stenciling, And many other fun things! The point of Colonial Day is to teach kids all about the Colonial times and for us to see how it would have been like back then.

My favorite activity was Dame school. Dame school was  my favorite because the teacher actually taught us the way they taught the Colonials. The best part about Dame school was the spelling bee. The spelling bee was my favorite part because she gave the girls very easy words and she gave the boys very hard words.

One thing I learned about Colonial  life is that back then they thought that boys were smarter then girls. They thought that because they expected more from boys then girls.

I want to learn how they made they’re weapons. For example what they made them out of. I want to learn that because back during the colonial times they didn’t have what we have now so i’m very interested in learning that.

Colonial times were different from today because back then they didn’t have flash lights, or any technology. They didn’t have lots of the things we have now. Another reason colonial times are different from today is because now there are many types of materials they didn’t have.

Curiosity Project-Golden Retrievers

A Curiosity Project is when you choose a topic you want to research about. When your done listing all your information you gather it and make a slide show.

My Curiosity Project was about golden retrievers. Chose this topic because I loved dogs for so long. But my favorite dog was a golden retriever. There my favorite dogs because my mom had one growing up and i love when you look in there adorable eyes.

This is my Curiosity Project:

It was super fun to do this slide show on golden retrievers. It was a great expirience to learn more about my topic. I really really REALLY hope we will do another slide show on a new topic. If we do I think my topic will be deadly animals.

#2 Plant Blog Post

It has been 2 weeks since I talked about plants.  The plant looks so different because it grew taller it grew buds basically everything is different. But then there’s the manipulated plant… Which is boring… It’s exactly the same. Our manipulated plant is also dead… What Mrs.Mangan said is to try to bring it back to life and that is what we are doing. And all that means we are now using water instead of seltzer.

Now why don’t we talk about the measurements to the controlled plant! At the beginning of the week it was 4 centimeters tall. Now the plant is 8 centimeters tall! And then the manipulated plant hasn’t even poked a little sprout. But my group and I have been brainstorming why it won’t grow and this is what we’re thinking… Maybe the flavoring in the seltzer is making the plant die. Now why don’t we talk about the color and the direction!

So far the color is actually a really pretty light green. And the other thing is that 1 of the buds are purple but the other buds are green. And is it me or is that kinda strange… Well now that I think about it I bet it’s just the plant color. Again I have no idea what the plant is going to grow into. Now I think it’s time to talk about the direction of the plant. Every single plant in the quad Is going in different directions. One of the plants is growing up towards the light another plant is going to the side and the other are touching each other. That’s all we know sofar about the plants and I hope you injoyed  reading this book!

Plant Blog Post #3

My group and I have been working on our plants which you should all know if you read my other 2 posts. Let me give you a little info on our plants since 2 weeks ago… Why don’t we start with pollination. If you don’t know what pollination is then let me explain. Pollination is when bees butterflies or certain types of birds for the example hummingbirds all those animals and insects pollinate.  What pollination does is keep plants alive. Why you ask… Because when something like a bee takes its bottom and touches the pollen in the flower it mixes in with another flower and makes a new flower. We did that just with our fingers. If you don’t get that let me explain we used our fingers and touched the stigma of the flower and touched the other flower and soon that’s going to create a new flower.

I think it’s time to talk about the controlled and manipulated plant now. Why don’t we start off with the manipulated plant! So far nothing… not even one tiny little sprout. The soil is dry… the plant hasn’t even grown! And if you ask me boring… Any way moving on. Now there’s only one more thing to talk about and that’s the controlled plant. Our controlled plant is dying. But at least it’s 16 centimeters tall. It has exactly 15 leaves. It used to have 24 leaves but it’s dying so the leaves are falling off. Our flowers are also dead… there as dry as a bone! Basically everything about the plant is dry and dead. Like the soil I’d say it’s probably so dry that it’s as hard as a rock! But there’s one thing that I find kinda strange… here’s the thing we’re pretty sure that it’s dead but it has huge pods. And when I say huge I don’t mean big I mean huge! My group and I are actually thinking that maybe the buds aren’t gonna grow if our plant is dead. We’re thinking that because the buds have been their for at least 3 or 4 weeks. That’s everything that has been going on this week hope you liked hearing everything about the plants!

Blog Post #1

For the past few weeks my group and I have been working on our plants. Mrs.Mangan is keeping a secret from us by not telling us what the plant is going to grow into. We used a quad well technically we used 2 quads because we made 1 manipulated and 1 controlled. For the controlled we used water and for the manipulated we used seltzer. Okay back on topic… so we also used 3 fertilizer pellets, 3 seeds, soil, water, seltzer.

My only question is how long the plant will survive? For example will it last a week a day a month? We do have a hypothesis and that we think it won’t grow because we’re all assuming that flavoring makes the plant unhealthy.

Okay now let’s talk about what happened over the past week. So far it looks like only the controlled plant has grown and the manipulated plant well not so well… The manipulated plant hasn’t even poked a  tiny leaf out of the dirt. The controlled I have to say it’s doing great! The controlled has almost grown an inch the plant is only 4 feet away.
