Last Blog Post of the Quarter

This is my last blog post of the second quarter. The second quarter I had Mr. Calvert for tech and I thought his quarterly class was very fun. Some of the projects we did were easier for me than others. Some of the projects we did are breadboards and cams. I liked Mr. Calvert because he is very flexible. He is very flexible because if you needed extra time on a project he would give it to you. When he was teaching I was able to understand him because he was able to get the point across very thoroughly. If I had to have this quarterly again I would say yes.

This week we made a LED light. We made a LED light by using a breadboard, a battery, and wires. The project was really complicated but I got the LED light to work. It was complicated because I had to strip the wire which was really hard but I eventually got the wire stripped. Once I was done and saw it worked I was very happy. I was very happy because this is our first project with electricity and it worked.

For this week we made cranks.  The crank worked super well. I had to cut a hole on the top so the cam on the crank would come up and move. Before I did that the crank worked but not so well. But after I made the change it worked perfect. The work was challenging but the time and effort paid off. I would do this project again because when you finish you feel accomplished.

I have finished my cam project for this week. In the beginning, it was challenging but at the end it got much easier. At the end it was easier because  instead of doing the project in class I watched the pre recorded videos which was easier because I can go at my own pace. One part that worked well for me was putting the cam inside the holder. Next time I do a project like this I will do the pre recorded videos like I did this time.

In class, we are making cams. We make our cams by having a template that is made out of special paper. We have to cut out all the pieces, and if there is a box inside of a piece we just cut that out too. Next, we have to fold and glue certain pieces. I am not done, but so far I am finding this project very difficult. It is difficult because we are doing this over zoom which makes it harder to get help. Hopefully, by the end, I will find this project fun and interesting.

One of our projects was to make a shape with trusses in them. The shape I chose is a square. To put the shape together we had to use carrots. Using carrots is a struggle because it was hard to put the toothpicks in the carrots without the carrots breaking. When it was time to test my square it did not hold a lot of books. My square collapsed because the toothpicks were not sturdy.

For this weeks project, we had to make an I-Beam and a beam of our own design. I was excited to see how the beams worked. My beam held more cans of food because I used a triangle in my design which is the strongest shape. My beam held around 25 items, even though the video cut off at the end, you were still able to see that my beam was very strong. My I-Beam did not work as as well, but still held many items, because the weight bent the beam and the beam fell. I think the experiment was interesting because I never knew a cardboard beam could be so strong.

For this weeks assignment we have to make an I-Beam and a beam of our own design. I am excited about this because this is our first building assignment, and we get to make our own design. At the end of the assignment we have to test the          I-Beam and our own design. I hope my own design works well and holds a lot of cans. I hope my design works better then the I-Beam. I am looking forward to this challenge.

This week for technology we did a Nearpod about adhesives. It was about different types of glue and how to glue them. I found learning about different glues very instresting and made the time I was was doing the work really fun. I really liked the part about how to glue. It was intresting because it taught me how to make little guides when you glue. Overall I found the Nearpod really fun and interesting.
