Rube Goldberg blog post number one: decisions 


It took a long time just to come up with a simple task. I am working with Eshal and Mia. At first, it was hard to come up with an idea that we all agreed on. Mia wanted our task to be making lemonade. Eshal and I wanted to do something different. We thought making lemonade would be too hard. Then we wanted our task to be smashing a watermelon. Mia helped us realize that smashing a watermelon would be too hard. We decided to go with the lemonade idea. We came up with an idea that has 4 simple machines and was 10 steps long. Four half of those days we had no idea what our simple tast would be. I decided to work with two people because I work better in groups than alone. To exceed we needed to have over eight steps and three simple machines, our original sketch was three simple machines and 8 steps but we wanted to exceed so we added more. Our first step making lemonade is a ball hitting Domino’s hitting a bigger ball which will go on to a ramp and then we’ll go on to a leaver and then that ball will hit another ball which will slide down a wedge which will hit another ball going down another ramp which will hit a water bottle that has a string attached to the powder for the lemonade and when the power goes down it will pour out landing in a picture ready for us to mix with a spoon and drink. It will be challenging and fun. We also need to make sure that we put the pitcher in the right spot so the powder doesn’t spill. We are not sure when we will start making our Rube Goldberg but we should start soon. We are thinking of making our Rube Goldberg on a long bench or patio because our machine will be long. We are also thinking about making our machine outside so anything that spills  be a mess

My group launch our rocket that we worked so hard on. I think that we did a nice job. Maybe even better than last time. This is a unit that starts with dughing and that ends with launching. As fun as that sound today we will only be focusing on the launching park. Launching is my favorite part of this unit. Some imporvments could have been made to make my rocket even better that it is but overall I think my group did a great job on working together, building a rocket, and on launching! 


When it was our turn to launch I was the pumper. I pumped the air to 50. Then our countdown master counted down from ten ant the launcher pressed the button. Our rocket went shooting up into the air. The rocket went so high. The klanomiter readers took the reading. I think our rocket went about 35 digrees into the air. 


We added the neumbers of what the klanomiter readers got. Then we divided it by three. We got our chart and drew lines from the corner. Then we drew a line acros where the lines met. It was 47.5. Then I put it into feet. It went 155.8399. That was so high! I think my rocket went higher then the last launch, what an acomplishment!


In this unit there were some high and lows. My group sometimes dissagreed on parts for the rockets like the fins. My group agreed on a team name and a thin body and a pointy nosecone. Overall I think my group did very well. It was so much fun launching our rocket! I whish I could do this every year.

This is a unit that starts with designing and ends with launching. I know very exciting but we are going to focus on the designing part of this long fun prices. My group is the flying saucers, a team that is made out of four people. We have argued some but in the end we all come together and agree on an idea. If someone’s idea is not heard we give them a chance on another part of the project. My group was very confident in our rocket but there was a catch, we had to make one change to our new rocket. It was hard deciding because our previous rocket had done exceptionally well and we were afraid that if we made a change our rocket wouldn’t go anywhere. You can’t live in fear so we made quite a few changes to our rocket and we are almost positive that our rocket would do great. 


My group was so excited to build a rocket, but we didn’t forget that we had to change one thing. “ I think we should change the fins!” one of us said. “ I think we should change the nose cone!” someone else said. “ I think we should change nothing!”. We decided to change the nose cone and make it pointier because then it would be “aerodynamic” as Tony says. We chose to make a change that would improve the rocket rather then make a change because it was required. It was very hard making the nose one painter because you have to turn the tip of it and if your hand slipped just a little bit your nose cone would come undone. After many attempts and fails we finally made a perfect shape for our nose cone so we taped it onto the rocket. It was hard to tape it on to the rocket because again we didn’t want it to come undone and also the tape would make it thicker and heavier so we had to place the tape carefully. 


It was finally time to design our rocket. We grabbed a sheet of paper and got to work. We began drawing a thin body because we saw in the past that the thick body does  not work as well as the thin one. Then we drew the nose cone, pointier than our other rocket. WEehad to write the explanation so of course Tony wrote, “ We want to make it aerodynamic!” We thought it was important to collaborate during this phrase because whatever we did now would impact how high our rocket went. 


Now it’s all about the building. We got a PVC pipe and a sheet of paper. We rolled the paper on the pipe and taped where the ends meet. Then we made the nose cone out of paper and taped it on. We got styraphone and cut out a fin shape. It was really hard to do because the stylophone was so thick. OUr teacher hot glued them on the rocket and we let it dry. Since it was hotglue it dried very fast. I wrote “ Flying Saucers” on the side of it and I colored the fins in purple.  I have a good feeling about our rocket.


I think my group is going to do a good job! Maybe our rocket will go really high agian. I like this experiance becuase I get to work with the people I dont usally work with. I think that one imporment I could make is being patiant. Whenever someone is not ready my group goes on without them. We are supposed to be a group, not a few people. If my group worked on that IM certan that we would of done 100 times better.,

It’s tomorrow! Today we picked the seeds out of our seed pods. Most if our seeds were brown. I took one seed it was a good size and I’m so excited to plant it! We planted the Wisconsin fast Plant. The name of the planet really dose describe it! It only took 20 something days to do this! And look at the results!


Here is the process for growing Wisconsin Fast plants.


  1. Plant the Wisconsin fast seed
  2. Put it in a sunny spot
  3. Water it everyday
  4. Record what you see ( opinal)
  5. When your plant grows flowers pollinate
  6. When you have seed pods and you think there ready pick them.
  7. Take the seeds out of them.
  8. Do this prosses over and over again.


Hey, have you ever wonderd how the Wisconsin Fast Plant gets  planted in the wiled? Well i have the ansser for you,   when the seed pods grow they are on the plant but when they get old then the plants will fall of and get re-planted. Also, animals can eat the seeds and poop them out. The last way is that you might be eating a fruit and then you spitt out the seed you are planting a seed.

Plant blog post #2

This is blog post #2 on plants. In our controlled  we are growing flowers. Some of our plants are dying. The highest plant measures 11 c.m. The shortest is six c.m. long. Most of our plants are green, but the ones that are dying are brown. Our healthy ones are bright green and most have flowers. The change with our plants since the start is that now they have flowers and in the beginning they had no flowers. What a big change!

In our manipulated our tallest plants is 15 cm tall and our smallest is 6 cm tall. We are noticing some flowers in each cell of our plant. Most of them are green. None of them are dying.  We are manipulating natural sunlight. The change with our plants since the start is that when we first started with our plants they had no flowers and the highest measurement was 5 cm, but now we have lots of flowers and our highest is 15cm.

These things happened because we took good care of our plants. We also solved a lot of plant problems. When we realized that our plants were not growing flowers we put our plants closer to where the water got sucked up and then three days later we had flowers! Also, when our plants were drooping we got our teacher and asked for something to hold up our plant and she gave us sticks. I wonder how our plants will turn our at the end. Soon we’ll find out!

It is the third week of our plants. The first thing we did when we started planting was add the wicks, the wicks is something that soaks up the water and the water goes up into the plant. After that we added soil. Then we added the fertilizer to help our plant grow. Then we added a [inch of soil. After that we added the actual seed.  To top it all up we added more soil. We did that twice.

We needed to find out a scientific question. My groups question was will our plant grow better if we put it by the window sill for natural light. Our other plant was under a lamp. My hypothesis is that our plant by the window sill will grow better. The heist plant in controlled is 11 c.m. In manipulated it is 16cm.

Our manipulated is doing pretty well.It is growing higher then our controled. We started growing some flowers. Its really exiting to see new things happening to our plant. Maybe the flowers will turn into a fruit! Well will find out soon!

Maglev post #3

Our first track we planed is very different from the one we have now. We thought that’s if we placed stript magnets all over the track on the south side and put the train on the south side then the train would levitate. But we were wrong. Also on our track we only used stript magnets and we layed about four on our track.

We had a lot of problems. But, one stood out if them all. We only got one side to levitate. We tried everything but nothing worked. Then someone in my group had a really good idea. “ We should flip this magnet on the track and maybe it would levitate!”  The person said. So we did that and then……………….. It didn’t work. So and then someone else in my group noticed that the train and the tracks don’t line up. So then we lined it up and then………… It worked!!!

For our final design we did  lot of things. There were two stript magnets in our track far apart from each other.   On our train we put strip magnets on opposite sides. We had stript magnets that reached both sides of our train. e only had one layer. 



In the beginning I felt really frustrated because we only got one side to float. When we tried to get it to float but it didn’t then I was mad and sad. But then when we got both sides to levitate, I was really happy!</span


Maglev Post #2

Today we started day #2 of our maglev trains. We had some problems and some successes. The success is that we got one side to levitate. We used little disk magnets on the bottom of our train. So then when we tested it out we saw that one side levitated. We had six disk magnets on our vehicle. We put three on each side of our train.   We put them on the dotted side so they would repel to the track magnets. We only got one side to levitate but that’s better than nothing!


We also had some fails. There was one side of our train that did not float.  We learned from our mistake that disk magnets work better than strip magnets for our vehicle. Because of our fail we flipped the track magnet around to see if it would levitate like that. We tested it out and it still did not work.


My goal for my next design session is to get the left side of the train to levitate. I don’t know how we’re going to do it. But, my team always finds a way to fix things!

Maglev Train Response #1

A maglev train is a train that floats above a magnetic track. There are magnets on the train and track. The train floats about ten c.m.  above the track. The train can float higher depending on how many magnets there are on the track. For my group at first for the track our track only had one layer of repelling magnets so our train didn’t levitate. For our train we stacked disk magnets on top of eachother. That was a fail. So then we put other magnets on the bottom of the disk magnets and flipped the strip magnets around. Then the train levitate


Today on the tracks we put strip magnets on our track and for the train we put disk magnets on the same side. Then we put our train in out box and then we saw then it could levitate! But, before that we did fail . We put the magnets on repelling sides and then…… the train repelled and it floated! Everyone in my group cheered.


At first my experience in my group was ok. But, then when things started to come together my experience was great! We used a few tweaks and a lot a tape to make this possible. We’re not done yet though. We are working on moving our train across the track quicker and with a light push. It challenged us to make the tweaks because we didn’t know what was wrong at first but the we figured things out!
