Tech blog post 1

In technology we learned about the sinking of the titanic.  We talked about possible ways it sunk along with the Dee bridge and the challenger disaster. In 1912 the titanic sank. Maybe one of the reasons was because the material of the ship wasn’t strong enough. Or maybe it was the angle that it hit the iceberg. I don’t think that the people that built the titanic though hard enough to design every angle of the titanic and make sure that all angles could wouldn’t be damaged by an ice burg. If the iceberg hit the back of the titanic would it still have sunk? The same thing happened with the Dee bridge. It couldn’t hold the train so the train dropped into the water. Maybe the material the train was to heavy? I have lots of questions about the signing of the titanic and my goal is to try and figure them out.

Capstone Blog Post #3

The final part of our capstone is to make our slides and record our script. I was a mess when I first started making my slides. They were unorganized and messy. Meeting with Mrs.Cooper really helped because she gave me lots of suggestions. I wanted to do a talk at first. I had my script planned with my slides but when it was time to record everything went wrong. I tried to film me and my Chromebook with the slides on. You could only see my legs when I positioned my phone to see the text on the Chromebook clearly. I tried to screen mirror my slides on the tv. I had my sisters record me. It was really hard to say my script because my sister kept on imitating me and making weird faces. At one point she got her feet in the video. Ew! I kept on messing up my lines because I felt like there was a lot of pressure on me because my sister kept saying “Hurry up!” and “Every time you mess up I get five of your skittles.”I emailed my teacher to ask if I could switch a screen recording. She said yes so I did it right away. It only took my three tries, unlike the tedtalk that took me 23 tries to at least get it decent. In my final recording, I stumbled a few times but I think it turned out ok. The last part of this capstone process was putting it in the folder. I renamed it and put it in the folder and was done. Overall capstone was fun and I think it was a good way to prepare for middle school.

Before my interview, I was very very scared. I thought what if I mess up and my interview doesn’t like me but it didn’t go like that at all. Yes, I messed up a few times but it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. When I first called my interview she picked up right away. I went right into the questions and she answered all of them with a great answer. I recorded the interview and wrote down the answers. My interview was very nice and lots of times we ended up speaking at the same time which was awkward. Towards the middle of the interview, I started to feel more comfortable. After I finished all of my questions I asked “Is there anything else you want to tell me that I didn’t ask you?” and she told me about graduates and guide dogs. My interview was Kate and she was going to watch Brady (my dog) the day after my interview. Kate is my mom’s friend’s sister. Brady loves Kate and met her dogs. Overall I think my interview was great and un and that I was scared for nothing.

My topic for capstone is guide dogs. My main inquiry question is how to have the breeds and training of guide dogs changed over time. I knew I wanted to do something with dogs but I didn’t know what to do. Then we got my dog from guiding eyes for the blind. My family said that I should do guide dogs. At first, I didn’t really like the idea. But then I thought about it and thought about it and I came to like the idea. I also wanted to do something with art. It was a hard decision but I picked guide dogs instead. I guess guide dog equipment relates to art because the person that designed the handle and leashes used art. It helped when I zoomed with my teacher becuase I did not know what my inquiry question was going to be. I learned from my capstone that I can come up with ideas that interest me. If you don’t understand whenever I want to draw something I always search for inspiration I never draw what comes to mind. Also if I want to watch a movie I search for new kids’ movies. The process was hard and easy. I knew a couple of my sub-questions like how the breeds changes over time and what equipment is used today but other questions were hard to come up with. I wanted to do a sub-question with the training but I did not know what to do. I decided to talk about training technics.   yo or capstone, I did not have to research to come up with a topic. I think it is going to be hard to finish my project but fun.

Homework is bad

Imagen after a long day of school when you open your bag and see piles and piles of homework. You’re stressing about having enough time to do it and worry about not finishing it and getting in trouble.  This is a problem that happens almost every day. Schools shouldn’t have homework because it causes stress kids might not have enough time and it’s our time after school.

Schools should not give out homework. It causes stress. For example kids from k-12, you spend five hours of homework per week. But recent studies shown that grades  8-12 spend 10 hours a week on homework. Also, some kids worry about getting their homework done and they overdo it which causes then to get a bad grade because they are rushing.

Schools should not give out homework. Kids may not have the time and then will have to make up for it even though it wasn’t there falt. For example, I have basketball four times a week which gives me one day to do my homework. I spend at least two hours doing it per day. Also, Eshal and I’s siblings spend rounded to ten hours a week sometimes more on homework.

Schools should not give out homework. At the end of the day, school is over and it’s our time. Schools should not control what we do after school. We are already learning for 5 hours at school. We don’t need an added 10 hours at home. Also, we have homework for every subject its hard to change subjects because all of our focus was on the other one.

RG Blog post one: Decisions

Rube Goldberg blog post number one: decisions

It took a long time just to come up with a simple task. I am working with Eshal and Mia. At first, it was hard to come up with an idea that we all agreed on. Mia wanted our task to be making lemonade. Eshal and I wanted to do something different. We thought making lemonade would be too hard. Then we wanted our task to be smashing a watermelon. Mia helped us realize that smashing a watermelon would be too hard. We decided to go with the lemonade idea. We came up with an idea that has 4 simple machines and was 10 steps long. Four half of those days we had no idea what our simple tast would be. I decided to work with two people because I work better in groups than alone. To exceed we needed to have over eight steps and three simple machines, our original sketch was three simple machines and 8 steps but we wanted to exceed so we added more. Our first step making lemonade is a ball hitting Domino’s hitting a bigger ball which will go on to a ramp and then we’ll go on to a leaver and then that ball will hit another ball which will slide down a wedge which will hit another ball going down another ramp which will hit a water bottle that has a string attached to the powder for the lemonade and when the power goes down it will pour out landing in a picture ready for us to mix with a spoon and drink. It will be challenging and fun. We also need to make sure that we put the pitcher in the right spot so the powder doesn’t spill. We are not sure when we will start making our Rube Goldberg but we should start soon. We are thinking of making our Rube Goldberg on a long bench or patio because our machine will be long. We are also thinking about making our machine outside so anything that spills  be a mess

A Long Walk to Water

A Long Walk to Water Reflexion

Long Walk to Water was a great book! In the book A Long Walk to water, the greatest impact was when Salva reunited with his father. This surprised me because it had been so long since they saw each other and there were so many negative sighs that his family was dead. Salva kept on going and I think that that led on to a theme.

I think the theme in A Long Walk to Water is to never give up. If Salva gave up he would have never reunited with his father. Also if Salva hadn’t followed his uncle’s words he wouldn’t have made all those wells for Sudan. Salva didn’t give up on his dream for Sudan and has persistence. Nya had a lot of patience and kept her cool. Another theme could be to stay calm because both Nya and Salva did that. Nya was patient for the well to be done and Salva kept on going to a refugee camp to a refugee camp and had patience when he was looking for his father.

When the water came out of the well it symbolized a new future for Sudan.  No one had to struggle for water anymore. Also, places like the river and the dessert symbolized the obstacles in Salvas way. He never let them stop him though.

Long Lunch Lines

Image yourself standing on a line that takes up half the cafeteria. People pushing and shouting and trying to get in front of you. You can’t help that you already taste the pizza that is a huge line away. …… this is something that the students of Heathcote Elementry have to deal with every day.

Acording to Mia Forray a fifth grader ” It definitly takes to long to get lunch it takes a quarter of our whole period!”  Mia isnt the only student that feels this way though. Acording to Greta Friedman a fifth grader ” The people that work at the seprate lines should work together to make everything go faster becuase one line finishes way before the lunch line.”

Rocketry blog post #4

My group launch our rocket that we worked so hard on. I think that we did a nice job. Maybe even better than last time. This is a unit that starts with dughing and that ends with launching. As fun as that sound today we will only be focusing on the launching park. Launching is my favorite part of this unit. Some imporvments could have been made to make my rocket even better that it is but overall I think my group did a great job on working together, building a rocket, and on launching!

When it was our turn to launch I was the pumper. I pumped the air to 50. Then our countdown master counted down from ten ant the launcher pressed the button. Our rocket went shooting up into the air. The rocket went so high. The klanomiter readers took the reading. I think our rocket went about 35 digrees into the air.

We added the neumbers of what the klanomiter readers got. Then we divided it by three. We got our chart and drew lines from the corner. Then we drew a line acros where the lines met. It was 47.5. Then I put it into feet. It went 155.8399. That was so high! I think my rocket went higher then the last launch, what an acomplishment!

In this unit there were some high and lows. My group sometimes dissagreed on parts for the rockets like the fins. My group agreed on a team name and a thin body and a pointy nosecone. Overall I think my group did very well. It was so much fun launching our rocket! I whish I could do this every year.

Rocketry blog post #3

This is a unit that starts with designing and ends with launching. I know very exciting but we are going to focus on the designing part of this long fun prices. My group is the flying saucers, a team that is made out of four people. We have argued some but in the end we all come together and agree on an idea. If someone’s idea is not heard we give them a chance on another part of the project. My group was very confident in our rocket but there was a catch, we had to make one change to our new rocket. It was hard deciding because our previous rocket had done exceptionally well and we were afraid that if we made a change our rocket wouldn’t go anywhere. You can’t live in fear so we made quite a few changes to our rocket and we are almost positive that our rocket would do great.

My group was so excited to build a rocket, but we didn’t forget that we had to change one thing. “ I think we should change the fins!” one of us said. “ I think we should change the nose cone!” someone else said. “ I think we should change nothing!”. We decided to change the nose cone and make it pointier because then it would be “aerodynamic” as Tony says. We chose to make a change that would improve the rocket rather then make a change because it was required. It was very hard making the nose one painter because you have to turn the tip of it and if your hand slipped just a little bit your nose cone would come undone. After many attempts and fails we finally made a perfect shape for our nose cone so we taped it onto the rocket. It was hard to tape it on to the rocket because again we didn’t want it to come undone and also the tape would make it thicker and heavier so we had to place the tape carefully.

It was finally time to design our rocket. We grabbed a sheet of paper and got to work. We began drawing a thin body because we saw in the past that the thick body does  not work as well as the thin one. Then we drew the nose cone, pointier than our other rocket. WEehad to write the explanation so of course Tony wrote, “ We want to make it aerodynamic!” We thought it was important to collaborate during this phrase because whatever we did now would impact how high our rocket went.

Now it’s all about the building. We got a PVC pipe and a sheet of paper. We rolled the paper on the pipe and taped where the ends meet. Then we made the nose cone out of paper and taped it on. We got styraphone and cut out a fin shape. It was really hard to do because the stylophone was so thick. OUr teacher hot glued them on the rocket and we let it dry. Since it was hotglue it dried very fast. I wrote “ Flying Saucers” on the side of it and I colored the fins in purple.  I have a good feeling about our rocket.

I think my group is going to do a good job! Maybe our rocket will go really high agian. I like this experiance becuase I get to work with the people I dont usally work with. I think that one imporment I could make is being patiant. Whenever someone is not ready my group goes on without them. We are supposed to be a group, not a few people. If my group worked on that IM certan that we would of done 100 times better.,
