Capstone#1 What To Do, What To Do???

Like my school and even my whole town, I have been doing a capstone project. I am coming to the end of my capstone research and I wanted to share my process. I will be doing this over the course of 3-4 posts. Here is number one.

I wanted to do something that would be fun and interesting. I limited it down to two options. One is the Westchester food bank because my temple works with them. My second option was Samsung because my uncle works there. I finally made the decision of The Westchester Food Bank.

After this, I started to find sources. The first thing I did was go to the food bank’s website. I found out that they were part of a bigger organization called Feeding America. I then found something called Map the Meal Gap on the Feeding America website. It is a map that you can click on any county any state and it will show you many things such as,  the number op people hunger in that area, the average meal cost, and how much money would need to feed everyone how is hungry. This was probably one of the most helpful resources I have used.

To wrap the first part in my capstone overview I would say that finding resources was not that hard for me. I’d say on a scale of one to ten it would be a 9.7.

Make sure you come bank over the next week to find out more about my capstone research.

Thigs I mentioned: Westchester Food Bank, Feeding America, Map the Meal Gap

Irish Bank…Delish

Your looking for some lunch and say, ” I want to try something new,” then the Irish Bank is for you. The Irish Bank is outstanding Irish food which is not common in Westchester County. It I located on 230 E Hartsdale Ave, Hartsdale, NY 10530. It is open during these hours of Operation: Sun – Thu: 11:00 am – 2:00 am Fri, Sat: 11:00am – 3:00am.

Their menu is full of delicious appetizers such as Hummus Platter, Mozzarella Sticks, and NY Style Wings. They also have many breakfast, lunch, and dinner options. I personally have only have gone for dinner but I have had many meals there. I have had a delicious  Chicken Quesada with Jack cheese and an order of fries. It was one of the best Quesadillas I have ever had. I have also had Pasta and Ribs. You might say, “I thought it was an Irish restaurant,” well it is Irish and American.

The server was very kind and was very helpful. An example would be one time my younger brother wanted fries and when the waiter brought it out and my brother told my mom he didn’t want the fries in that container he wanted the container my other brother had, and she didn’t want to order a new bucket of fries. My mom signaled to the waiter and she brought out a new container of fries.

Th Irish Bank has a nice atmosphere and is kid friendly. It is not loud and if it is, it’s not to the point of not being able to hear the people you are dining with. It is a bit dark but I and my brother can still play hangman on the napkins, and it is readable. It is on the fancy side but not so fancy. It is very clean and the tables were clean too. The upper and lower levels both have TVs for watching sports like basketball or football.

Overall I think this restaurant is a solid 4.5 and I will definitely go again. I would recommend this to any who want to try something new or just wants a good meal.

Amazon will deliver groceries to your car in 15 minutes!?!?!?!?!??!?!

On Tuesday amazon released a video of “amazon fresh”  Wich is a service hat delivers groceries in under 15 minutes to a pickup station.  This service is like the regular amazon except for food. One thing to know is for orders under $40 you have a $10 fee. They are going to build over 2,000 locations, that’s 4 times the number of trader joes!

My thought are I think it is a smart idea and I think this will grow and become the next big thing amazon makes to improve shopping for everyone weather they want a toy for there grand child or a cucumber for luch amazon has it.

Immigration Podcast–Unexpected Twist

Immigration. Heard of it? The answer is probably yes. Everyone seems to have an opinion about it. Today we have the story of immigrant Ofelia Cruz. She came from Peru looking for a better life. She had an unexpected twist in her journey.

Follow along:

The Unexpected Twist

Part of the 5-B series ”Immigrant Voices’’

Matthew Margolin

Host: What is on the news every day?  Immigration.  People like President Trump say immigrants are bad people, but that’s not always true. People from places like Peru don’t have it as well as people of America do. Immigrants move to America because they struggle in their country with getting money and even good jobs. Even if they have a good job, the jobs sometimes don’t pay a lot.  Today Matthew has the story.

Matt: Thanks Yuki. Ofelia Cruz moved from Peru.  Life there was substandard. She had a good job, but even though it was a good job, it didn’t pay much. The rest of her family all went to the U.S., then she came to join them.

Ofelia/Sound Bite: Oh… In my country, I work in the bank for 3…. 13 years…I start 22 years old I continue  um…until 30.34 34  years old

Matt: Ofelia had a good life and in her country.  She could practice her religion without fear. When she moved here, she moved to a city where there were a lot of people from Peru, so they worshiped together.

Ofelia/Sound Bite: My city consists of a group of Peruvians and we always come together to preserve the traditions of my country.

Matt: Although she had religious freedom she still had trouble with finding work. It was hard because immigrants don’t get treated well and they can’t get the jobs we can get.

Ofelia/Sound Bite: I think um.. work in the bank too, but uh, it’s not possible because the first um…..…..It’s supposed to I, I learn English first, but if I….When I go to the bank it’s necessary to speak English, but uh, if I don’t speak English I don’t start working in the bank.

Matt: This was hard for her. Then out of the blue someone offered work, but it had an unexpected twist.

Ofelia/Sound Bite: Somebody told me, “You want to work?” tell me, “Ok let’s go.”  We, we go to the some house and she told me, “Okay, we work, um, cleaning the house.  But, “Cleaning the house,” I say, “I don’t know, okay, but I, I, I don’t feel good.”  And when I clean the bathroom I’m crying.”  I come in in this country for cleaning house, or no?

Matt: Finding work was the only trouble Ofelia went through. For most immigrants, the journey here is the hardest part.  It can take days, even weeks, and it is sometimes dangerous, but Ofelia had a different story

Ofelia/Sound Bite: Very easy because I come here, um, with a ten-year visa.

Matt: After her visa ran out Ofelia became a citizen. To her, there she felt nothing changed compared to not being a citizen.

Ofelia/Sound Bite: Honestly I felt no difference.

Matt: As you can see, unlike Trump says, not all immigrant are bad and they go through a lot. They get bad jobs because they are immigrants and they are discriminated against. This is hard for them, when they just want to live like you and me and have a good life. So take the time to think about them and not think about them as “criminals” or ”illegals.”

Apple is in Trouble

Apple is now being sued for an IPhone 6 commercial from 2015. The commercial contains a sample of the song Good Times   a track by Jamie xx.  The band is not complaining about copyright; they’re complaining about “right of publicity.”

Since their voice is  “prominent and recognizable” it tricks people into “falsely believing that Lawson endorsed Apple and the iPhone and / or that Lawson consented to the use of his voice to advertise Apple’s products.”

Six months after the commercial was aired apple said they made a mistake. Know every time it’s played the band  get paid.

6 word stories

In school we went on a field trip to Ellis island and before we studied 6 words stories. I made some from my trip, hear they are:

As we as come, they watch

For every family, a diese spreads

Three ways, with one we’ll go?

The pain is with it all.

Where here, now were trapped again.

Marring a stranger just to live.

There’s hope, but not for us.

So many people, only one me.

Some many come, very few stay.

Finally we are free at last

I’ll come, you shall not be alone

Will I stay, will I go?
