Blog Post #1-Topic Choice & Proposal

On March 20th, Mr. DeBerry gave us our Passion Project assignment.  He gave us a list of suggested topics, from which we could choose. Alternatively he also gave us the option to select our own.

I have always been interested in the human anatomy, and I thought that I could learn more about the brain, because the brain controls the body.

As part of the project, I had to write a proposal letter. The most important part that was in my proposal letter was my main inquiry questions and sub questions. My main inquiry question is “How does the brain work?.” My sub questions are, “How fast does the human brain process information”, “What are the different parts of the brain and what does each part do?”, “How is our body controlled by the brain?”, “How much does an adult brain weigh?”, and “What is the human brain made of?”. I chose those questions because they would help me understand the brain better.

My final product and my final view of Technology

My flashlight looks really good. I loved making the flashlight! It was so fun! Here is how it looks:

I also like the other things we did in Tech. Like making the switch, doing the break in the box, and making the pendents. I really love Tech! Tech is so fun!

Soldering my circuit

Soldering my circuit wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. I thought it  would be really hard because there were a lot of parts to the circuit. It was also kind of hard because I didn’t solder the wire to the switch properly. It took me 3 tries to perfect it. But it mostly easy.

Measuring and stripping wires

Measuring wires was way harder than I thought. The rough wire I used to measure the wire on the sheet kept moving. Finally I got the mesurements:

Stripping the wires were easier and fun. Then We curved them to look like hooks:

Designing our flashlights

When I got the design paper and Mr. Calvert said to make the drawing the exact size, I was like, how am I supposed to that! Then when Mr. Calvert explained a minute later, I thought I got how to do it. When I started, though, I messed up really badly. After a while I got it.

This is how my design looks:

Rough scetch of our flashlights

A couple days ago Mr. Calvert announced that we will be making flashlights. We got a sheet to put our designs on. Mine was kind of simple. But maybe when I continue to make it i’ll add to my flashlight.

Here’s a picture:

The building process of the flashlights sounded fun. I can’t wait to make them! I wonder how we are supposed to measure them. I guess i’ll find out when I make the real design.

Pendants and Switches

Today I soldered my pendant together and it doesn’t look good…

IT LOOKS AWESOME!

I am really happy about how it turned out. This is a picture of it:

After I tied it (it fell apart when I came home), Mr. Calvert told us to work on our switches. I hadn’t started mine yet so I started making it. I made a square base, I put two square holders, and attached that with a rubber band. I also put pompoms on the inside of the holders to make it look good. After that I attached tin foil to the base and the rubber band. This is how my switch looks:

Pendants

I am making my pendant right now. I chose to make a necklace with my initial(M) as the design. I’m not done with it yet but I am excited to see my final product.

We are soldering the wire together. I am kind of scared using the soldering iron because it is really hot, it goes up to 800 ° Fahrenheit. We also learned about other kids getting injured with it. I am also excited to use a soldering iron because I’ve never used before. I am almost at the soldering iron part! Almost there!

Human Rights Day

On Friday, November 22nd, it was human rights day. We learned about people who are living in poverty. In Technology we learned about a woman who is the founder of Pijama Program. We also played a game called PlaySpent.

During the first half of Tech, we played a game called PlaySpent. You started out with only $1000 for one month. We had to choose wisely, and some of the decisions were really hard. One was, spend $400 and save your pet’s life, or let your pet die. I chose to spend $400. What would you choose? That was only one part of Tech.

The second part of Tech was learning about a woman who founded Pijama Program. Her name is Genevieve Piturro. Pijama Program gives out books and pj’s to kids in need of them. Those kids go to bed in their regular clothes because they don’t have comfortable pjs. When she went to a shelter once a little girl, around 6 years old, asked her what pjs were. I found this really sad 😞. Genevieve had to explain what pjs were to this little girl. She first read books to children but then later she realized those children didn’t change either. So when she brought books she also brought a bag full of pjs.

That was everything we did in Tech that day.

Break into the box

The next week we played a game where we had to break open three locks on a box. It was really fun. One lock was directions, another was numbers, and the last one was letters. It was really hard and we only got two clues from Mr. Calvert. There were also other clues around the room, one was a story about a kid not following directions. The other one was related to the safety rules chart. There were also posters around the room that weren’t there the day before.
