Land and Water Lesson 4

On January 13, Ms.Kiley came to my class to basically do the same thing we did last time but a different way. Instead of  pouring water from a bottle on the stream table we used a cup with a small hole in it.

We got different jobs but we kept our letters. Since I was letter A I was catch bucket holder which is the person who gets the leftover water from the stream table.

In our stream table( plastic box thing)we added more sand. Then person C got to chop and mix the mud mixture up. He made it a slope.

The slope

Then person D got to pour the water in the cup so the experiment will work. When she poured a little nothing happened  but when she poured a lot more the stream table had a stream.

I collected a lot of water from the experiment. We also had to get a graduated cylinder. A graduated cylinder is a cylinder that collects the last 50 milliliter of the water left. And that is what happened when Ms.Kiley came for lesson 4.

Land and Water Lesson 3

On January 10th, Ms.Kiley came to my class for lesson 3. She taught us about what happens when water is lightly rained on a slope and what happens when it heavily rained on a slope. She taught this to us by making us do an experiment.

We were given letters

The slope when person C was done pouring water

The slope when person C was done pouring water

The amount of "water" we got when person C was done pouring water

The amount of “water” we got when person C was done pouring water

to see what jobs we got for the experiment. My letter was A so I was photographer, absorbent pad manager, and materiel manager. Since I was materiel manager I got the supplies. The experiment was to get the plastic box thing with sand, gravel, clay, and topsoil. The person with the letter B assigned got make the slope out of the stuff in the plastic box. Then the person C gets to pour the water on the slope. He poured it lightly and roughly. I was taking pictures the whole time.

When he poured it lightly nothing happened. Then when he poured it roughly a little bit of water turned into a stream. Since there is a hole in the box,  person D had to hold a bucket under the hole to see how much water we collected. We didn’t collect a lot but we did something. And that is what happened when Ms.Kiley came for lesson 3.

On January 6th, Ms.Kiley came to my class again. This time she taught us about the water cycle.

Ms.Kiley told us how the water cycle works. First, water rises from the air. Heat

causes this to happen.

Second, The liquid that rises turns into gas. This is called evaporation.

Third, the gases turn into a liquid. This time the cold makes this happen. Then the liquids connect that forms a big cloud. It is called condensation.

Fourth, precipitation. That is when the cloud gets too big from the liquids and then either rains, snows, sleets, or hails.

After that she made us do an experiment. The experiment was to put hot water in a plastic box looking thing, then put saran wrap on the box  and secure it with a rubber band. Then on top of the saran wrap we put a ice pack. We had to wait like 5 minute and while we waited we watched a video on the water cycle.

After we waited, Ms.Kiley told us to look at our experiment and lightly tap on them. When we did, little droplets actually fell from the saran wrap! It was awesome to see that the experiment actually worked.

After that Ms.Kiley made us fill in a sheet in our land and water journals. It was about the steps in the water cycle. Evaporation, condensation, precipitation, runoff, infiltration, and groundwater. And that is what happened when Ms.Kiley came for the second lesson.

On January 4th, Ms.Kiley came into my class and she taught us a little about land and water.

She showed us pictures of different places that had had changes. She showed us this picture that had a mountain with a huge hole in it. She said that it had nothing to do with people and that it was all by nature. Me and my class made some guesses of what it could have been. Most of us thought that water was gushing through and cracked the mountain. But she won’t really tell us what it was.

The other one had a tree that had roots outside of the dirt. The dirt was dry and it looked like the dirt was too dry for the roots to go in.

The last picture had a mountain with lines across it. Ms. Kiley said that those lines were formed during the years. She said that water was probably passing through really roughly and made those marks.

After that she gave us more pictures to look at and answer the questions in a very thick packet. Ms.P said it is our land and water journals. So that is what happened when Ms.Kiley came.

All about Melike!!!!!!

Hi! My name is Melike (Mee-lee-kay) and I am very excited to start blogging and posting. But more importantly I LOVE CATS!!!! I am 10 years old. My passions are cartwheeling, reading, writing, and anything hard (most of the time). I live in New York State, and I play the clarinet. I am in Ms. P’s class. My favorite sports are tae-kwon-do, swimming, and gymnastics (only cartwheeling). I am in 4th grade and I have a lot of homework so far. I spend some time building stuff (small stuff) and the rest doing homework, Musical.ly, and other stuff. And that is all about MELIKE!!!!:)
