Constitution Project Blog Post #2

Q: Reflect on your experience with researching your question. (e.g., Explain what you found challenging? Explain what motivated you. )

My question is: How did the Voting Rights Act of 1965 help stop Voter Suppression?

I chose three different resources:  1. Voting Rights Act of 1965 from Wikipedia.  2. Voter Suppression from Wikipedia.  3. Civil Rights from BrainPop.

I liked researching this topic because it was a learning experience. I had never heard of Voter Suppression until I read the Wikipedia article on it. Some parts were challenging while researching. Wikipedia uses lots of words that I don’t recognize and I have to search up. They also use lots of phrases to describe things that I don’t understand.

What motivated me was the fact that I had a question, and I wanted it answered. I would research anything to answer that question. That fueled me the whole time. If I have a question, I want it answered.

Researching can be challenging, but if you want to learn new things and answer questions, you have to spend time on it.

Why did you choose this question to research?

My question is: How did the Voting Rights Act of 1965 help stop Voter Suppression?

I chose this question because civil rights is a major topic right now.  The signing of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 was a really important event in civil rights history.  Voter Suppression was a big problem, and I want to know how this act helped stop it. Lastly, I chose this question because I don’t know a lot about the Voting Rights Act of 1965, or voter suppression, so it will be a learning experience! I think that Voting is a basic right that all humans, no matter what race, gender, religion, etc. should have a right to.

My Opinion On The Electoral College

The Electoral College is a system that helps balance the way our voting system works today. Many people feel that this system is no longer useful, but imagine if there was no Electoral College. What would happen?  States with more population and votes would rule the national election, leaving smaller states with almost no say in the national government.  For example, states like California, New York, Texas, and Florida would have the most votes and would control the national agenda.  On the other hand, states like Utah, Montana, Arkansas, Colorado, etc. would have no nearly say in how the country would be run.  The Electoral College is there to protect the smaller states and to give Americans who live in smaller states a meaningful say in who should become President.

The benefits of the Electoral College include:

  1. This country’s Founding Fathers established the Electoral College because they thought it was the best method to choose the President.  They wanted this because this would ensure that no uneducated and uninformed electors would vote, and instead put it in the hands of the electors more likely to make a better and more deliberate decision, one decided by the voters of their state.
  2. The Electoral College makes it easier for candidates to campaign.  Most Democrat states, like California, won’t be the big problem for the Democrats. Most Republican states, like Texas, the Republican candidate knows it’s on their side. But, the candidate would spend their money on battleground or swing states like Florida, Georgia, Nevada, etc. Some people argue that if there were no Electoral College, campaigning would be more expensive than it would have to be or it would be concentrated in places that are not representative of the country as a whole.  For example, winning New York City alone would be worth more than winning Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, and Indiana combined.  But, people in those states have real issues that should be discussed by national candidates.

Also, the electors in the Electoral College are the people that actually vote for the Presidential candidate.  These people are appointed by the state governor. Your vote helps decide who these people are and, therefore, helps to elect the candidate that you want to win. It’s not that hard of a system to keep track of.

In my opinion, I think we need to respect and try to understand the system that the founders who wrote the US Constitution put in place. This option, while complicated, is an important part of our voting system.  This system has worked for over 200 years and is a strong way to help keep all of our voting rights in place, no matter where we choose to live in this country.

My Opinion On The 2020 – 2021 Election

Hi everyone,

In this blog post, I’m going to explain my opinion on the 2020 – 2021 Election.

My opinion is that I didn’t vote for anyone, I’m just learning about the process. I hope that everyone vote’s is counted, no one is left out, everyone got involved to make their voice heard, and the candidate who had the most votes under our system deserves to win.

It looks like Joe Biden will have more votes than any President ever: including Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, Donald Trump, and this shows that our country is growing then ever before. We should be proud that our country is growing. More people are interested in this election, more educated about it, and more people are showing up to vote. This is how our country will grow stronger.

The more we communicate about the election and the issues, the stronger our country will be. If we can take our neighbors to vote, getting your friends to vote, in the end of the day, the people will be the ones that are in charge. This is how our Founding Fathers wanted our country to be run. “We the People……” the opening statement stated from the US Constitution.

America is a growing country, and we should be proud of her every, single, day.

Growing Creativity

I feel that we should grow more creativity during this special time that we are quarantined in our home. This is because when we are doing homework on our device(s) when we do E – Learning, we can sometimes go minutes and hours without stopping to take a break to do what we love.

I am suggesting that we should take more time to do what we like to do like read a book, draw, play, etc.

Teachers can also join in by issuing assignments that require building and/or creating something, going outside to explore and notice things in nature, etc.

When we increase our creativity, we get more curious, and curiosity is what creates new ideas that can help stop this pandemic.

My Passion Project – How to Sketch

Welcome to my Passion Project – How to Sketch! I decided to choose the topic of sketching because I am a good drawer, and I wanted to try something new that I haven’t done before and become an expert on it.

I love art in general, and I am so happy sharing it here with you. I have enjoyed making and creating this project, and I hope you do too!

Wish Suggestion

I think that Mrs. Rickard should read Wish next year because:

1. It is a really good book and it teaches good lessons. For example, one lesson that I learned is that anger is not the only way to getting what you want in life because that is what Charlie thought in the beginning.

2. It is very exciting by having ups and downs in the story. For example, like when Charlie found Wishbone, she then lost him again, then found him back again!

I am sure that next year’s kids will really like it.

I also have a recommendation for read – alouds. It is a book called “The Boy who Harnessed the Wind.” The author’s name is William Kamkwamba, and he is writing a self – biography about himself. The setting is in Africa in a town with no electricity. The whole story is based on curiosity because William was curious about inventing a windmill in his town to provide electricity, and in the end, he ends up on a worldwide national T.V. show for “harnessing” electricity in his town. I think that this book can teach good lessons, and next year’s kids will like it too.

Colonial Diary Entries

Hi. This is Mia and I will be showing you my diary entries that I wrote about a Man named Jack, and his son John is getting apprenticed to him. I hope you enjoy them! 🙂

Dear Diary, 6:30 am April 4, 1771

It is morning and tis day my son John is going down to the village with me to help tend the shop. Life as a carpenter is not easy because I’m the only one in the village. John will have to work hard because of all this commotion.

                                                                         Sincerely, Jack.

Dear Diary,                                                                                       7:00 am April 4, 1771

Today for breakfast Mary cooked us some sweet corn and flatbread. It is very filling. I hope John is ready for his first day! Today I have planned to teach him to shave the wood chips off to get nice clean and healthy wood. I have to go wash up before we head out the door.

                                                                    Sincerely, Jack.

Dear Diary,                                                                                     6:23 pm April 4, 1771

Tis day has been a busy one! I even taught John how to tend the safe – box. I’ve given him a nice sturdy club to defend it. Almost half of the box is filled! After I drop James off, I’ll be off to get some food for Mary, some fresh wood for the shop, and after that, I’ll be off to the tavern to get some cider. Tomorrow, Mr. Wilkinsons has asked me to fix his carriage wheels, so me and John have to get up bright and early tis next day. I have better go lock the store!

                                                                              Sincerely, Jack

Dear Diary,                                                                                                7am            April 5, 1771

I just got out of my home and I am heading down to the Wilkinsons. They live in a manor house so their house is bigger than my house. They have 5 carriages so me and John will have a busy day. Tis days are never easy! Also for supper, I am taking John down to the tavern to grab some food. I hope Mary isn’t too cross!

                                                                  Sincerely, Jack

Dear Diary,                                                                                        7:35am April 5, 1771

Tis I just got home. Mary actually is not that cross about me taking John down to the tavern for dinner. She said our little lad earned it! Mr. Wilkinson’s so happy with our work, that tomorrow he wants us to fix the roof on his stable! Mr. Wilkinsons has given us even more money than our price was, but at least we have enough money to handle us for the rest of this year! Tis week will be a busy one!

                                                           Sincerely, Jack

Dear Diary,                                                                                7:30 am     April 6, 1771

Tis day we are going again to the Wilkinsons to fix the roof on his stable. Today, Mary is also going to go have tea with her friends, so she said to not expect her for supper. Today, I will plan to use some of that leftover meat stew and bake it to make a meat pie, and then, I’ll leave John to himself, and I’ll be off to the tavern just to talk with my chums. Well, Mary is calling me to go off to the Wilkinsons, I better go!

                                                  Sincerely,

Jack

Dear Diary,                                                                               6:00 pm               April 6, 1771

Tis day, we also did some extra work fixing a cabinet leg for Mrs. Wilkinsons. She paid us even more than her husband did the other day! They seem to have a lot of money on their hands! Still, I am saving up to buy a carriage for me and Mary. I actually am a very good cook, and John really enjoyed the meat pie I made him. We are saving some for Mary so she can try some of my amazing cooking! Well, I’m off to the tavern!

                                                        Sincerely,

                   Jack

Dear Diary,                                                                                                                    8:00 pm         April 6, 1771

Tis I have just returned from the tavern and tomorrow is Saturday. John and Mary are already asleep, and I’ll talk to Mary about my pie tomorrow. Also, tomorrow, I am off to fix the antique cabinet that I have created for Mary on her birthday. I will tell her that I am just cleaning up the shop, but I will surprise her on her birthday, which is this Sunday, and I have also been keeping in touch with her friends. They want to bake honey cakes and apple pie! My mouth waters just to think of it, but now it is late and tis I must get some rest.

                                                      Sincerely,

Jack

Dear Diary,                                                                                                                   7:45         April 7, 1771

Tis I have just woke up, and tis turns out that Mary loves my pie! She is again going out with her friends to tea on Saturday, which is unusual. She said she had to talk with them about a few things. Well, tis is all the better because now I can teach John how to carve exquisite details into wood. I planned on making cherry flowers for Mary! She has already gone! I better go too!

Sincerely,

Jack

Dear Diary,   12:00 pm April 7, 1771

Tis me and Jack are taking a break from carving. John is already a master at it! He suggested that we should carve roses into the cabinet leg. I am sure Mary will like it even better! Me and John will also create a secret drawer for her precious diamond necklaces so no robber can come in and steal her jewelry. Mary is going to be so pleased with us!

Sincerely,

Jack

I hope that you enjoyed my Diary Entries!
