Combining Colored Sugar with Liquids

Today we had science. We did our second experiment in the Mixtures and Solutions unit. In this experiment the many materials we needed were sugar, food coloring, vinegar, water, oil, cups, a teaspoon and a spoon for mixing. First we combined the food coloring with the sugar. We dropped exactly two drops of the food coloring into the sugar. Then we mixed the food coloring with the sugar to make a colored sugar. Before our group did any experimenting we wrote down our hypothesis’s for our experiments.

Our first experiment is colored sugar mixed with water. My hypothesis is if the colored sugar is mixed with the water then the sugar will sink to the bottom of the cup filed with water quickly and the colored sugar will mix with the water. Once we were done with our hypothesis and talked about it, after discussing with my group my group did our experiment. Our observations were that the colored sugar lost it’s color and the color mixed with the water while the sugar sank to the bottom. Our hypothesis was partly correct but was not fully correct so our hypothesis was denied.

The next experiment was with the colored sugar and the oil. Our hypothesis was that if the colored sugar is mixed with the oil the colored sugar will drop slowely to the bottom of the cup and will not mix with the colored sugar because the oil is too dense. After we did the experiment we recorded our observations. Our hypothesis was confirmed! The oil did not adsorb the colored sugar.

My group’s final experiment was with the colored sugar and the vinegar. The hypothesis this time was almost the same as the oil hypothesis because we thought that the vinegar was dense and would not mix with the colored sugar. After we had done the experiment and took a look at the result we saw that the colored sugar had mixed with the vinegar and the result was the same as the water mixed with the colored sugar but this time the color was a little darker. My group was very surprised about this outcome. We talked a little about this then after we had done our experiments we had to clean up and write this blog post.
