Nonfiction Unit

In the reading lessons that we did with Mr . De Berry we learned how to do things with nonfiction reading. One  of the things we learned is nonfiction text structures . One of the nonfiction text structures is problem / solution In problem/ solution the book asks a  .  and then the book answers the question .  Another text structure is  cause and effect  . In cause and effect there is a cause of something and then a effect . We also learned structures to take notes in . For example one text structure is compare and contrast . Also another text structure is boxes and bullets . Another thing we learned is how  to check  if a informational text is qualified  the researchers ask questions . Who wrote this text ? Who  reviewed  the text that I am reading . When was this text published ?                        We studied about weather in groups .

The groups were a mix of 4A and 4B each group studied 2 weather topics . For example I studied tornadoes  and hurricanes . I studied tornadoes and Hurricanes with Emma Brody  Akif Chase Alex and 2 other people. Mr.  De Berry also taught  us how to make a good summary . You have to  try to figure out what the author is trying to say . Also you have to put some supporting details . For example  I am reading a book and the authors name is Patricia Hermes . If you would summarize a passage from that book you would write at the beginning . In this passage by Patricia Hermes she explains that ….  ( Write what she\ he  is trying to explain ) .

In the first lesson we learned that you see nonfiction things every single day . For example you see the weather forecast and that is nonfiction . We also learned the author’s craft  . One author’s craft is a good lead . In lesson 6 we made word banks for our topics In the word banks we wrote words that are important for our topic .
The most important thing that we learned in our unit is  techniques  . For example an author’s technique Is  make a comparison .   I think I worked good in a group .   We made  spark questions . Are first spark questions lead us to another spark question  . At the lesson we learned about spark questions . Mrs. Berger showed us a video of someone making a fire .

We made a chart for the authors techniques and goals . The chart that we made had three columns . In the first column you had to write what techniques the author used . In the second column we had to what the authors goal was . In the last column we had to write how it affects the reader . We learned what lens we read with . The lens are called expository narrative expository narrative and graphics  . We drew green glasses for expository . Blue glasses for narrative. Red glasses for graphics.  That is what we learned in our reading unit. https://flipgrid.com/9ad83e . When we finished our unit we made a slideshow with our group . The slides were about the weather topic we studied.
