Expert Lecture 2 has Arrived!

Olivia’s mom came to school two days ago! She taught us all about non-profit companies and philanthropy. I thought it was all very interesting. She started by saying “Why do humans give?”…

The answers varied but a few of the results talked about giving to the poor, giving to a relative etc. I talked about indirect and direct giving. My analysis was: giving to a relative is direct, giving to a company that helps poor people is indirect. She said all the answers were correct. Then Olivia’s mom started her lecture…

The first part of her lecture was like a grappling hook. It pulled you into the conversation with talk of nonprofit companies. What is a non-profit company? Well, a non-profit company is a company that uses its profit on its service. In other words, its extra money doesn’t go to the manager. Instead it goes back into the company’s service. Good examples are police stations, fire stations, hospitals and universities. I think that this is very generous of the companies.

She also talked about how some non-profit companies have one main focus, such as helping orphans. These are called charities. Sometimes, charities also have volunteers helping them. Then she began talking about philanthropists. What is a philanthropist? Well, they are people who help charities make decisions. They also donate to charities. I think that being a philanthropist is a very big responsibility.

After that we made our own plans for charity companies! SCRATCH went the pencils. We learned about how we needed a budget. We talked about volunteers and funding. What a great way to conclude the lecture! All in all, I think the lecture was very fun. I had a great time and can’t wait for the next lecture!
