Expert Lecture Nine was Niftily Fine!

Expert Lecture 9 gets a big award. A cool activity. But before I can talk about the activity, I have to talk about the lecture. Jasper’s Mom came in. She is an orthopedist. That means she works in the field of muscles and bones. She talked to us about different kinds of surgery. It could get pretty freaky! Every now and then they have to push screws through a bone! And the screws stay there permanently. Or they have to put hardware inside you! Now, this may be freaking you out, but if you are a kid, you’re in luck. Kid’s bones to adult as saplings are to trees. Easy peasy for bending. So, to all kids out there, instead of getting hardware and screws you just have to get a cast or a splint.

Now the part we’ve all been waiting for… the activity! We got to make splints and then put them on fellow classmates! I was the patient. First Elliot and Ronald had to get out these “cotton strips” and layer them five times. This was the simple part. It was about to get complex. To start, ElliotĀ and RonaldĀ had to start making plaster strips, and then dip them in water. Then they had to gingerly lift the first cotton strip onto some of the plaster. Then they had to put back on the stack, and stick it on my arm. Then we pulled out something called ACD tape and began to wrap it around my arm. Soon the tape began to tighten and the plaster began to harden and I had myself a faux cast! It didn’t stay on long since it got all warm and itchy. But now I know how to make a splint! What a cool Expert Lecture! I can’t wait for the next one!
