Site Visit and Interview

As it says in my other post I am researching on my Capstone project on Apple Inc. I needed to have a site visit at an Apple store or a place related to Apple and an interview with someone who works there. It was easy to get a site visit and an interview.

This weekend I had my site visit at the Apple Store in Greenwich. When I went I observed on what was happening at the store at the store at that time. Also I observed what all the products and services they offer and I took pictures. People were sitting at tables with phones. The people working there helped the crowd and showed them iPhones and iPads. I took pictures as notes including pictures of computers, beats, speakers, iPhones and a tooth brush.

On Monday I had my interview with my uncle, Tracey who works for Apple and lives in Florida. My interview was over FaceTime. We talked for around 30 minutes I asked all different questions about Apple Inc. I ask him questions that are related to my main question “how did Apple’s products improve people’s everyday life from when they did not have Apple to now?” and then other questions about Apple. It was very exciting to have my interview and site visit I learned new things about Apple and their products that helps me understand more about Apple.

Capstone- Choosing a Main Inquiry Question and Choosing Sub Questions

For my capstone after I chose my topic I had to make my main question and sub questions. My main question is “How did Apple inc improve people’s everyday life to now?” I thought that would be a interesting question and a fun question to.  This question is not about the technology, but it is not really all about the company it is about people and the company and the technology. My sub questions are is the design for Apple inc phones better than other phones? Why was Apple inc created? What does apple build of off when they are building something? How often does the technology change? How many times does a ipad iphone or computer take before it is right? I think these sub questions are good sub questions because they can help me with my research and I think they will help me for my main question. How I think my sub questions will help me with my main question is my sub question will help me find more information for my main question.

Capstone- Choosing a Topic

In class we started a new project called Capstone. Capstone is a project where we choose a topic a do research on it. We pick a main question then we do our research based off of that. We do this for about two months, we do this mostly in school.

When we first thought about capstone I had a few different topics. First I wanted to do McDonald’s and is the food actually really bad for you. I also thought it would be a topic that would be fun to research about for two months. Then I decided that McDonald’s was not a good topic for capstone so I changed my topic. I decided to change my topic to Netflix because that would also be a fun topic and it is something I use almost everyday and I think that is very interesting. Then again I decided that this would not be a good topic for me, one because it would be really hard to find an interview, two because after a while it could get a little boring towards the end. Then finally my mom helped me come up with this idea I chose Apple Inc. I thought this would be a good topic because I have four apple devices and I use my phone (which is Apple) everyday. Also this project can be really fun. So I chose Apple Inc. and made my question which is “How did Apple’s products improve peoples everyday life from when they did not have Apple (mostly iPhones) to now?” I really liked this question and I think I can make a good capstone off of this question.

Immigration Stop Motion 3

In class we are still working on immigration stop motion. We finished the stop motion part and we are on the recording are voices part. So far we have recorded two scenes and we need to record three more scenes. It feels so good to have finished the stop motion part. It was kind of hard at some points. We were the last group to finish the filming part. We have five scenes because we showed all different families from all different places discussing why they are going to America. The recording part is hard because sometimes we mess up or we go to slow or fast. Like for one scene I am a boy so I talk in a mans voice, but I sometimes go to slow with it. It is cool though watching it with the talking. The whole thing getting put together it is very exciting.

Water Filters

In class we were working on creating water filters. Our are top four features were safe for all ages, reusable, efficient and good quality. The were five bottle with different colors the fifth one is really dirty dark brown the first is perfectly clean clear water. Everyone wanted to get a one. The materials we thought about were layered filter filter paper, soybeans and polly glue. The main object in all is a plastic bottle.  Our first design was a clean dry non-toxic baby wipe at the top to catch any particles. Under the baby wipe was around 6 layered filter paper to change the color. Under the filter paper is a mosquito screen folded 5 times to get any other particles. The color we were aiming for was a two. The two had some dirt and very little particles. After it went through there was no particles and was in the middle of a two and a three because of the color. We had a problem with the baby wipe because it overflowed. The baby wipe was still helpful because it took away all the particles.

After are first filter we changed it a little so the color would be lighter. We were still aiming for a two. The design now is the mosquito screen on the top to get all the particles. Under the mosquito screen is  a baby wipe to catch any extra particle. Under the baby wipe is a paper filter to change the color. Under the paper filter is sand and gravel to change the color and catch anymore particles. We had trouble setting up the sand and gravel because sand kept coming out because there was not enough gravel so we had to fix that. After we put it through we decided to put it through again and it turned out to be a three. No particles, but the color was a three. It was dark, but not too dark. It was like a light brown, but a little bit darker.

Since we still needed to get the color of the water to just a two we still needed to work on another filter. At the top there was the mosquito screen for particles. After that was a baby wipe. Under that was a paper filter to change the color that had cotton balls over that was gravel (to change the color and take away any extra particles.) The color for that one was like a two and a half. There was no particles in it. The problem with are filters is that it does not take away all the filters. That would mostly be because the color is tea so it can’t fully take away the color, but it should at least be a little less than a two or a two.

A Long Walk To Water

A Long Walk to Water is a book by Linda Sue Park. It is about two people who live in Southern Sudan separately. There are two stories. The stories switch off every other chapter. One is a true story about a boy named Salva and one is based off a true story about a girl named Nya. The book mostly does Salva’s part. This book can be sad sometimes, especially on the chapters about Salva. Salva’s village had gotten attacked while he was at school. His class ran into a bush and all the people split up into villages. He was around 11 years old when that happened. Nya’s story is she lives with her family. Everybody has jobs and her job was to get water. Everyday all she did was walk back and forth to a pond everyday. Once she gets to water she sticks her hand in mud and tries to find water in the mud. She did this everyday. This book made me feel thankful for what I have.

This book has leadership in it especially on Salva’s part. He found his uncle. His uncle was a leader to their group for a while. Effective qualities for leadership is kindness, confidence, bravery, intelligence, skills, strength, courage, focus, cooperation and communication. Those are all effective leadership qualities. During a time when a war is happening, like in the book, it is important that Salva’s uncle had all these traits.

Salva demonstrates these qualities throughout the book. For example strength Salva did not just give up when he was tired he had the strength to keep going. Another one cooperation he cooperated because he did not want the group to abandon him like his first group. Also confidence Salva did not just stand by when know one would give him food, he had the confidence to get food from the adults. Finally bravery he was brave when he lost his uncle and his friend. Not as much as his friend, but still he was brave. Also he continued doing what his uncle did by taking everything step by step.

Salvia’s philosophy by taking everything bit by bit can help me in my life. Like, if there is something that is hard for me that I am doing I can just take it bit by bit until it is complete. It can not only help me in cases like that, but if I don’t know how long something is I can get through it bit by bit. Also if I do know how long I am going to be there.

Perseverance is important which is something Salva has. Perseverance is important because when someone has perseverance and having a problem they wont give up they will keep trying. Because they have perseverance. If someone does not have perseverance they would probably give up and not be determined to keep trying. It is important to keep trying and not give up. If someone does not have perseverance they can get it.

Anyone can develop the ability to persevere. You need to persuade yourself or the person to have perseverance. You don’t always have to, but if someone does not have the perseverance for what they are doing then persuading yourself or the person is most likely the best thing to do.

This book is important and has a lot of lessons in this story.  Nya needs to dig and dig in the mud to get water. Which is not that clean. Water just comes to my sink and gets filtered. Also it took Salva a year and a half to get to Kenya from Ethiopia. It would take me probably around 12 hour because of planes. This book causes me feel thankful for what I have.

Rube Goldberg 8

We changed the goal to alka seltzer in water from stamp on paper. After a few times we made it work. It was so exciting. It felt so good I was so relieved. I can’t believe it worked. After 3 goals and 73 takes it worked. It took a long time, but it was wroth it. We were screaming so loud when it completed the course. We were all so happy. It felt like a weight was lifted off our chest. I would show the video, but I don’t have it right now. It took us a while, but we kept trying changed our goals until we got it right. We got really frustrated along the way, but at the end I felt so good. Lexi and Mia did to.

Immigration Filming 2

In school we are still working on immigration and we are still filming the stop motion video. My group and I Lexi and Mia decided that we were going to redo the first scene and have yesterday as a learning experience. Which we have not gotten a lot done yet, but are set looks more neat than yesterday. We have just two people not done, but we did not even get to the scene with them in it yet. We are going to make it at our houses so it will be ready for tomorrow. I will do one and Mia will do the other. It is really cool when you put all the picture together. It is hard while doing it, but at the end it is worth it. It take a while to do. Today we recorded how long it will take us to say the script. So we know how long to make it. if we don’t do that then something can go wrong and we don’t want that. It will not be the best because we have only done this once before, but it will not be terrible because we have had experience. We will do what we did today because even though we did not do a lot we can tell it will be better then the other one we did before. I am excited to see it when it is done!
