Week 7 – Spreadsheet

The spreadsheet I have submitted is different countries or territories in Asia, with data from Culture Grams. The way I wrote the average formula, is by highlighting the cells with data in column B, and clicking the option on the bottom of the screen that says Max. This automatically puts the maximum number in the cell after the cells I highlighted. Something I learned about my spreadsheets subject matter is that China is the most populated country/territory in Asia. Another topic a spreadsheet like this would be helpful for is the mean years of schooling in other places around the world.

Tynkering in Other School Subjects

I completed two activities in the math and English sections in Tynker. In the math section, I completed an activity called “Your Recipe” where I created a recipe to bake something using measurement. In the English section, I completed an activity called “There/They’re/Their” where I showed my knowledge about the different forms of the word “there” by creating questions where you answered the correct form of the word. To do this, I used “ask” blocks to ask the questions with choices for the answers. In the math section, I also used “ask” blocks to ask the questions, and then added choices for the answers. Some of the code blocks I learned how to use in these activities were broadcast, if then else, glide, set font to, ask, and say blocks.

Tynker Quizlet

This weeks assignment was to create a quizlet in Tynker. To do this, I first decided what subject to ask questions about, then created a project with a background and actors, next I added blocks to the Tynker project so that one of my actors would ask the questions and tell you if you were correct or incorrect after you submitted your answer, and finally shared the project with my class. My project asks questions related to math, including addition, multiplication, and division. When I looked at my classmates projects, I especially liked RM’s project because it asked questions about multiple subjects.

AY’s Tynker Music Video

When I looked at other people’s Tynker music videos, I thought that AY’s was really cool. I liked it a lot because it looked like a real music video. The animation stood out to me, because it was two girls, flipping and dancing along with the music. It made it seem more realistic since it wasn’t just animals, but it was people. I thought the soundtrack was very catchy and went along well with the animation.

Blog Post 2: Tynker

One of the “Programming 201” activities I completed was Storytelling. In this activity, I learned to make speech bubbles for the actors so they could have a conversation using the “Say” blocks. I also learned how to program the actors to wait their turn to speak, using the “Wait” blocks. I like how in Tynker, you can make actors of your choice do anything, and how everything is up to you. It is difficult to figure out the challenges that “Programming 201” gives you, for example, making an actor move whichever way you tilt your device, all on your own. One thing I learned how to do in Tynker is how to change the backgrounds and actors in the code.

My “About Me” project tells people about the things I enjoy. The actors I used were an actor representing me, two dogs, representing my own, an ice cream cone, and skis and ski boots. I used the “Say” block repeatedly because I wanted my actors to introduce themselves. I tried to incorporate making the actors have a conversation, which is something I learned in “Programming 201”.

Computer Science is Changing Everything

In “Computer Science is Changing Everything”, I found what Vida said very interesting. She said that in the next decade, there could be a tube you spit into that tells you what sickness you have. This reminds me of a COVID test, because you spit into a tube, and the data goes into computers, which tell you if you tested positive or negative. The part that I am still thinking about after watching the video was that computers do all of this work. I think this shows how advanced computer technology has come to be and how it is really changing life as we know it.

My Feature Article Journey

“Is everyone happy with their partner and their subject?” My teacher asks. “Yes!” We reply, eager to start. I was really excited to start the new unit. Feature articles! We got a partner and a subject that we would be working with for the entire unit. I got a great partner and my subject was the school nurse. Me and my partner decided to focus on why school nurses are important. It took a lot of editing and revising, but after a while, we had our entire article written on a google slide. After finishing the article, we started podcasts, the podcasts we did without a partner. We had to make a WeVideo without the actual video part. This means we had to make the WeVideo an audio only clip. In the clip, we read our feature article. It was a long and hard process because since everyone was recording at the same time, we had to keep redoing our recordings. Once I was finally happy with my recording, I had to name my WeVideo. I had to use a special name so that we can put my recording on the school website. This was very exciting to me, everyone at my school could listen to my podcast! Now that the unit is pretty much over, I know that this was definitely one of my favorites. Making a feature article was really hard, but it was worth it.

Rocket Launch #2 Reflection

We did it! We launched our rocket for the second time. I mean, it wasn’t an improvement, but we did it! The first launch was a success, the rocket went about 16.5 meters into the air. On the other hand, the second launch wasn’t as impressive. The rocket only went 5.5 meters into the air. This was a big disappointment to my group. We remade the nose cone so that it was pointier. We don’t know if this worked because the day of second launch, it was really windy and cold. On the day of the first launch, the sun was shining, it was warm and there was no wind. We wanted the rocket to go much higher. We expected it too go up to 20.5 meters. We were really wrong, but even though the rocket’s height didn’t reach our expectations, we still had a good time rebuilding, launching, and I can’t speak for my group, but I loved the rocketry experience.

This is a video I made reflecting on both launches

Rocket Launch #1 Reflection

After a lot of hard work, we made it to launching our rockets. We went through research, making passion boards, naming our group, designing the rocket and building it. It was fun, but my group did have some rough times when we didn’t agree. When we launched, all groups were successful meaning that no rockets blew up, broke or got terribly damaged. The worst damage that was done to my rocket was that the nose cone dented, but that’s nothing compared to what happened to some other classes rockets. My rocket went super high and so did all of the others. Launching the rockets was hard work for my teacher because she had to control 22 children outside. To make her life easier, we all had jobs. I was the pumper in my group. That meant that I had to pump a bicycle pump to 50 psi. After I pumped, the countdown person made sure everyone was ready, than counted down from 10. Once he/she got to 1, the launcher pushed the button that sent the rocket into the air. The last job was the video person. The video person recorded the rocket launch. Everyone also had to be a clinometer and a data recorder. I used the clinometer to see the angle of another groups rocket when it was launched. When I recorded data, I wrote down the angle of another groups rocket when it was launched. Now, we have to make repairs and change something about our rocket so that when we launch again, the rocket goes even higher than before. I’m loving the rocketry unit so far and am looking foward to launching again soon.

Colonial America – Pt 3 – Finished Building

Today is a big day in New Foursten. Our colony is almost fully built. It took long days and hard work but we pulled through are almost finished. Katherine helped her father, John plant the crops and straighten the fence on their farm, this morning, while the others built their homes and shops. I built my office and with the help of John, my house.

New Foursten is big. We have an ocean near by and PLENTY of land for the children to play on and for Luke to hunt.

I read in the paper that there may be a storm approaching. I hope it doesn’t hit us hard because it could ruin our colony. Then we would have to rebuild everything!

I feel very bad for Katherine. She doesn’t have time to make new friends. Or well, the other kids don’t have time to make friends with her. The other girls are cooking with their mothers, the other boys are building with their fathers. She has no mother and John is building so I am taking care of her.
