Code Name Verity BP2

After reading more of the novel, Code Name Verity, I have to say I’ve become more disgusted with this time in history. I’ve read about the horrors of world war II since forever but the treatment that this woman faces is a new side of it. I’ve always seen the war black and white, murderers and innocents, right and wrong, but I’m beginning to understand it better than that.

From the passages that she ‘wrote’ I can tell that the germans and soldiers that imprison her seem to believe in their cause. In fact, they see only one way, their path to victory. Perhaps that’s why they are so cruel to prisoners of war. ‘Queenie’, along with the others, have been tortured for information, starved, and abused.

The soldiers around her tell her of the camp she is destined for: Natzweiler Struthof. Natzweiler Struthof is a concentration camp, mostly for prisoners of war. People that go there are said to have ‘disappeared to be never seen again’. For example, she terrifiedly writes ”
‘’I fall under a sickening policy called Nacht und Nebel, Night and Fog, which allows them to do whatever the hell they feel like to people suspected to be ‘endangering security,’ and then make them disappear- really disappear. They don’t execute them here; they ship them off without leaving a trace, into the ‘night and fog’.” (pg 103).

This makes me angry to think about. How Germans decided that not only jews had to be punished, but anyone that stands up against them. And that these PEOPLE don’t even deserve to be remembered, only to have disappeared from history. Queenie may have given up, with her disappointment and lack of self respect to prove it,  but she still hopes she can make a difference by writing her life down to be remembered.  For example, she wrote,

“I would like to write something heroic and inspired before I go up in fireworks, but I am too stupid and sick with dread to think of anything.” (Pg 100)
