Expert Lecture #9: Jasper’s Mom

I can’t believe that we are on Expert Lecture number nine! We had Jasper’s Mom come in and she was explaining what she does. She is an orthopedist. What orthopedist do is they work with bones and help people when they have broken bones. Speaking of bones, we all got some cool bone shaped pens. When she was talking to us, we got these cool cards, one was boney Ben and the other was muscle Molly. The cards helped us with the questions she asked us, such as, which bone/muscle is this?

Later after we learned some of this we had to get into groups of three. I got into a group of four but it worked the same. One person in each group was the patient and the others were the doctors. I was the patient and three of my other friends were doctors. The three doctors got to put me in a splint! A splint is pretty much a cast but it doesn’t go all the way around your arm. The hard part of a splint goes on one side of your arm and the wrap just wraps around your arm. We let them harden a little and it felt so cool. I didn’t do this but some other people got their splints signed.

Overall, this whole Expert Lecture was amazing and I hope we have another soon.

Expert Lecture #8: Riley’s Dad

I couldn’t believe that we were already on our eighth expert lecture. And the eighth was one of the best. Riley’s Dad came in and talked about his job. He works at Experian, a credit card company. He told us that they help people keep their credits safe. They also help you with controlling your credit score. Some companies have copied them with some of their ideas. But, overall Experian is the big credit card company.

Sometimes Riley’s Dad gets to travel the world. He travels, but for work. He travels to have meetings and to go to some of their other offices in the world. Experian is a huge credit company and Riley’s Dad told us all about it with questions for us and some just plain facts. And when we did ask some questions we got things like water bottles and beach balls with the Experian logo on it. And at the end we got some cool color changing pens. But the most important part was the information that Riley’s Dad gave us about this world wide credit card company called Experian.

Expert Lecture #7: Greg

I was so excited when my teacher told us that we had a seventh expert lecture. But I also wondered who would be coming in and what they would be talking about? That was when my teacher that someone from Google, Greg, was coming in. I was so excited because I already knew that it would be great. And it turned out to be better than great. It was awesome.

Greg talked about his job at Google. He told us that he is a software engineer. He does computer science. He has previously worked on Google Classroom. Google Classroom is an educational program for teachers to work with in class. Greg told us that there is a 20% time where people that work at Google can take a break from their jobs and work on whatever they want to. One example of what they can work on is a new program. What he means is that you can work on a new program, then you can get Google to build up on it. There are a lot of cool projects there.

The projects aren’t the only cool thing there. They have a big slide, chefs, masseuses, a secret library, and an x-box. But that is not why he works at Google. He works at Google because that is what he likes to do.

Greg told us all that you should do what you like to do. And I think that is important because what is the point of doing one thing when you don’t put all of your effort into that job? Google maybe cool but do what you enjoy.

Expert Lecture #5: Jackie

Today we had another awesome guest come into our class. Guess who came… Jackie! Jackie is a mechanical engineer and she works at Curious-on-Hudson. Jackie came to our classroom and talked about being an engineer. She was inspiring. She talked about the science behind a lot of crazy fun creations. Jackie explained what STEAM is. STEAM stands for science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics. That statement is what everyone goes by. All of those 5 words are related to each other.

After Jackie explained all of that, we got to make our own creation. We made KAZOOS! They are so fun to use. After we all are our kazoos, Jackie explained the science behind the project. Jackie was amazing!

How to make a kazoo:

The materials that we used were two Popsicle sticks, two rubber bands, one straw, and one small strip of paper. The way that you put it together is first you have to cut the straw into two small pieces that hang off the side of the Popsicle stick. Then, you put the small strip of paper on one of the Popsicle stick and put one piece of straw at the end of the paper. After that you put the second Popsicle stick on top of those three other materials and tie the straw on with a rubber band. Hint: don’t make the straw too tight because then it will be harder to play. Then on the other side, put the second piece of straw in the two Popsicle sticks and on top of the paper’s other end and secure it on with the second rubber band. When you play the kazoo, pinch the ends and blow in with your lips on the edge of the Popsicle sticks. Enjoy your kazoo!

Expert Lecture #3 : Rush’s Dad

On December 9th, Rush’s dad came into our classroom and talked about the Supreme Court. Rush’s dad is an attorney. He talked about the history, the rules about electing people, and how it works. I learned that when you elect someone to be a Justice they are a Justice for their whole life until they retire or die. When you elect a knew Justice, the president has to elect someone and then take it to the legislators. There are three different courts that an issue might go through. It all depends on how serious the issue is.

The Supreme Court is the second highest court in the land. Can you guess what the highest court is? It is the BASKETBALL COURT! The basketball court is literally right above the Supreme Court. When you walk into the Supreme Court there is a sign that says No Playing During Court. It says that because when court is in action and a basketball game is in action you can hear the ball dribblig.

We got to take a quiz with two other people and all of us got a reward. The reward was a mini book that has the Constitution. Overall, I think that the third expert lecture was amazing and I really enjoyed it.

Expert Lecture #1: My Appa

What are expert lectures? Expert Lectures are when parents of kids in my class come in a do a talk to our class about their job, something related to their job, or their interests. Today we had our first expert lecture… MY APPA (appa – dad in Tamil. They speak Tamil in parts of India.) My appa talked about money and how it started. After he talked for about half an hour our class got to design Boyer bucks. Boyer bucks might be for our class. My teacher is Mrs. Boyer and it is money that we are creating so it is called Boyer bucks. I thought that the visit was great. I enjoyed learning about money and making Boyer bucks with my friends.

Here is a link to dfrank24, uodonnell24, and my Boyer bucks design:
