Capstone: Final Project

We’ve been working hard on our capstone project. I was third and I was really nervous to present, but I was still confident in my talk because I know that it is good and I have practiced tons of times. The only reason that I was nervous was because I was nervous that I would mess up. But, I kept on thinking that I wouldn’t mess up and I didn’t! I felt proud of myself on stage. Yes my hands were a tad bit shaky but that was only because I was a little nervous. I felt much better onstage and I was getting the hang of it. I was pretty relieved when I was done with the talk. But I was also a little upset because I wanted to do it again. If I could do it again I would be less nervous because it went great. I would have not worried about it before because there was no point in worrying.

I would like to thank my mom, my teacher Ms. Boyer,my friends, and the two places that I went to for my interview and site visit for helping me with this project! This project was a great experience and I really enjoyed it. I am extremely thankful for all of the people that helped me with this project because it was truly amazing.

My ted talk is below:

I hope you enjoyed!

The Dream Classroom

One of the many design challenges was today. We had Rob, from the DAE, come in and help us make this design challenge happen. Mrs. Cooper’s class came in and did the challenge with us. The challenge was to make the classroom of your dreams. We split up into groups and my group got right to designing. We went all wacky with ideas until we liked what was sketched down. So we were finished with our sketch but there was more. We got to bring that 2D sketch and make it 3D with only pipe cleaners, straws, popsicle sticks, tape, and play dough. Our team grabbed our materials and divided the work.

Our dream classroom had individual desks with floating beanbag chairs. Each person got their very own mini cabinet to store their supplies and had a robot pet with a charger for the pet. On the other side of the room there was a bar that has candy of all types, pretzels, and drinks. And right by that there were two different pods. One was a sleeping pod where when someone walks in it goes pitch black and the other one takes you to anyplace in the world in two seconds.

I don’t know about other people but I had such a great time with all of my friends making this classroom. It was one of the best design challenges ever!

My Dvorak-Inspired Garage Band Piece: Reflection

In music class we made our own Dvorak-Inspired Garage Band Piece. Similar to Jaws. This is a reflection on my piece.

How did it go? And why?

For me the easiest part of the process was using Garage Band because it wasn’t that difficult to use. The hardest part was creating my piece because of the blending of the different tracks. Overall, the project was fun but hard. And I liked making the piece on Garage Band.

Did they sound like Dvorak’s New World Allegro? (Jaws-like)

My pieces didn’t really sound like Dvorak’s because when I blended the different tracks they didn’t go that well together.

How many tracks?

I used three tracks in both of my pieces.

Did it work? Compare them.

I like my second piece better because to me the sound of the blending tracks sounded nicer and better than my first piece.

Did you follow the EKG or conversation?

I followed the EKG for my first piece and the conversation for my second piece.

Here is a link to my piece that I published on sound cloud:

If you want to here some of my classmates pieces and some pieces on my music teacher’s sound cloud account click on Heathcote Music Room that is under my piece and scroll through the other pieces. Enjoy!

Expert Lecture #5: Jackie

Today we had another awesome guest come into our class. Guess who came… Jackie! Jackie is a mechanical engineer and she works at Curious-on-Hudson. Jackie came to our classroom and talked about being an engineer. She was inspiring. She talked about the science behind a lot of crazy fun creations. Jackie explained what STEAM is. STEAM stands for science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics. That statement is what everyone goes by. All of those 5 words are related to each other.

After Jackie explained all of that, we got to make our own creation. We made KAZOOS! They are so fun to use. After we all are our kazoos, Jackie explained the science behind the project. Jackie was amazing!

How to make a kazoo:

The materials that we used were two Popsicle sticks, two rubber bands, one straw, and one small strip of paper. The way that you put it together is first you have to cut the straw into two small pieces that hang off the side of the Popsicle stick. Then, you put the small strip of paper on one of the Popsicle stick and put one piece of straw at the end of the paper. After that you put the second Popsicle stick on top of those three other materials and tie the straw on with a rubber band. Hint: don’t make the straw too tight because then it will be harder to play. Then on the other side, put the second piece of straw in the two Popsicle sticks and on top of the paper’s other end and secure it on with the second rubber band. When you play the kazoo, pinch the ends and blow in with your lips on the edge of the Popsicle sticks. Enjoy your kazoo!

Stop Motion Animation

Monday 12/12

What have I learned from Lego Simpsons Christmas. How To Catch Santa Claus

  • Go step by step and make small movements
  • Try to make everything look as realistic as possible
  • Ex. shake the person when they are laughing
  • Settings make it look realistic

Tuesday 12/13

What have I learned from If Only

  • When you draw you want to “move your drawing around”
  • Make your drawing come to life
  • Design, make, use

Wednesday 12/14

What have I learned from 5 Tips for Making a Stop Motion Video

  • Brainstorm your visuals
  • Create a storyboard for your stopped motion piece
    • Start with a script
    • Mentally visualize your story
  • Shoot to NOT edit
  • Add audio to give emotion and connect the story
  • Consider output

Thursday 12/15

What have I learned from Lego Simpsons Fishing. How To Catch A Shark

  • Don’t do too many movements at a time
  • Use different angles to catch different glances at what is going on
  • Ex. when a lot of time goes by, do big movements
  • When something scary or big make the character do a reaction

Expert Lecture #2 : Olivia’s Mom

I was excited when I walked in that morning and saw on the board, Expert Lecture two. Just after Thanksgiving Weekend Olivia’s mom came in and talked about the joy of giving to our class. What that means is that she talked about donations and charities. I enjoyed the presentation that she gave us because we were talking about what people do for donations and what they can do. We also talked about philanthropists and how they make a big change. Once the presentation was finished we got to pair up with a partner and make our own charity. We had to think about our mission, our goal, our budget, and our staff. It was awesome.  It was like we actually were actually making a charity of our own. We were jotting everything down. But at the same time it was also extremely hard choosing what our charity what it would do at the same time. Do you want to make your own charity one day? Are you interested?

Clarinet Basics : The Keys

I play the clarinet for band at school. I use the Buffet Crampon model R13 prestige. It’s wood is African Blackwood. My mom got it in 1980 and has kept it ever since. Once I got the option to pick an instrument I liked the clarinet and luckily she had one. When I started it wasn’t easy. One my fingers are small, two it is hard to get used to the fingering, and three the wooden instruments are heavy and my thumb on my right hand has to hold the instrument.

The keys are hard for clarinet. Especially since you have to move around your fingers so much and get used to the place they are in. Since you can’t see where you fingers go my clarinet teacher said that you should stand in front of a mirror for the newer notes and to see if you cover the whole hole. Covering the hole is difficult because if you move your finger off the slightest bit you will get a squeak. The A and Bb ( b flat) clarinets have 17 to 18 keys.
