  WEEK AT A GLANCE

Dear Colleagues,

Today, alumni from the Class of ’61, visited Greenacres reawakening memories from more than 50 years ago when they played in the schoolyard, learned in the classrooms and walked the corridors of our school.  The lingered in the small playground and watched the children at play, as though seeing themselves at five and six years.  They joked about their knees that just won’t bend to allow them to even venture near the swings. As they gathered in the library, they shared memories. Among them, the story behind the padding in the gymnasium, which we learned is the result of one of the gentlemen colliding head first into the then brick wall and having to be taken to receive medical attention as a result of the encounter. Photographs were shared along with stories of going to the principal’s office and walking home for lunch.  As Sharon and I stood in their midst, we listened as they reminded each other of their teachers, recalling their names without any hesitation and laughing together at the recollection of memories. One alumnus told me she became a successful artist because of her Greenacres Art teacher who inspired her during her early years.  Another spoke about becoming a dad so many years ago and having the pleasure of watching his own children learn to read. It was, he said, “from watching the magic of my children learn to read that I came to really appreciate teachers for what they do.” Another said, “I look back and I realize how important the foundation of my elementary education at Greenacres was. It is the foundation of everything that came after.” As they strolled throughout the building it was clear they were incredibly grateful to be back in this space that cradled them as early learners.

As you plan and craft lessons to build curricular understandings, remember, teaching is not just about learning. It is also memory making!

Enjoy the weekend and the chill in the air!

Warmly,
Sharon
